31. Legendary King

Enemies: Odin
Treasures: None

Do you recall in the basement of Baron, the ghost of the king telling you to return after you visited the Cave of Summons? Well, after successfully dispatching Asura and Leviatan, you can return to see just what the king wants with you and the summoned monsters. It turns out that the king was the spirit of the great raider, Odin. And he wants to help you out. But first, he has to test you to make sure you're worthy of his help. So, he administers the test by way of battle, of course.

It would be extremely unwise to come here if Rydia is below level 42. In fact, you might even be better off if you do this later on in the quest when you're more powerful.

Strategy

This battle is by far the quickest battle in the entire game. Whether it's in victory or defeat is up on you. Odin has one move. Just one. It's not a normal striking attack. It's not a mid-level black magic spell. It's not a special move. After a couple of turns using his normal attack to distract you, you'll see him raise his sword. On his next turn, he'll administer the end-all move to everyone. His one move is to destroy everyone in a single blow. Nice move. So when I say you have 1 minute to destroy him, I mean it.

The strategy goes as such. Do you remember the book in the summoned monsters' library that said "Odin only lost one match when his sword was struck by lightning"? Well it doesn't matter if you don't remember because I just told you. Anyway, that's the key to this fight. Odin is deathly weak to the lightning element. Use this to your advantage. Using a summon takes too long to pull off, so using ORamuh is out of the question. Have Rydia ripple off OBolt3 at will. If you think you can win this without OBolt3, you will have a very hard time being triumphant. I mean, I won't say that it can't be done with simply OBolt2, but the odds are much more in your favor if you have the pinnacle of lighting spells. It takes Edge a split second longer to cast a spell than to have him use his normal attack, even though Blitz seems like a good idea. Cecil is going to carve into the raider with his sword. Rosa is completely useless in this battle. Her attacks are weak, healing is not important to this battle, casting OSlow is not effective, and she'll eat up valuable time that one of the other more important characters can be taking. If she ends up getting in the way of your first couple attempts at this, then take her into a normal battle and have your guys off her. Call me crazy, but she's stealing time that Rydia can be using to douse Odin in lightning. And with the time she takes to take off the 300 hit points her bow and arrow attack would take off, you'll probably be dead before Rydia can use another lightning spell. It is cruel of you to off Rosa by your own hand, but to win, it may be the difference maker. If you happened to wait until later to do this fight and happen to have a fifth character, then s/he'll either strike with their weapon should they be a strong fighter, or join Rydia with the magic casting should they be a mage.

If you do it right, this battle should last only three or four moves. Edge attack, Cecil attack, Rydia OBolt3, Edge attack. That's all it takes, but realize you have to put these commands in at super button mashing speed or else feel the cold steel of Odin's blade. This one will probably take a time or two to get it, but you'll feel great when you triumph.

When Odin falls, he'll offer his assistance to you. Rydia will now be able to summon the night raider into battle. When summoned, he pulls off his signature move: a sweeping blow that instantly kills the entire enemy field. Be warned, however, that on occasion, some enemies just can't be killed. Therefore, sometimes the summon can't be pulled off, though it will still consume MP.
