21. Lavos Beckons

Enemies: Red Scouter, Mage, Barghest, Jinn, Scouter, Thrasher, Lasher
Treasures: HelmetAeon Helm, SwordRune Blade, ArmorAeon Suit, ArmKaiser Arm, BowSonicArrow, GunShock Wave, BladeStar Sword, SwordDemon Hit

When you enter, Mune will tell you that something scary is waking up, and a cutscene will be shown of Schala raising the power of the Mammon Machine to its limit. Afterwards, walk into the main room of the Ocean Palace.

The door directly to the right will lead to an HelmetAeon Helm after a combat or two (pressing the button in the first room is crucial, although it starts a combat), then return back to the main hall. Head to the area to the left with the Scouters and grab the SwordRune Blade from the chest, then follow the path down to get an ArmorAeon Suit near the other pair of Scouters. Afterwards, head out the door to the lower-right.

The door to the lower-right sports a ArmKaiser Arm for Robo in a chest along with some Blue Scouts. After some battles, make your way to the middle bridge where a button rests. Press that button and you can later move on to the next section of the Ocean Palace. Afterwards, head to the left and down to get the BowSonicArrow, and leave this area the way you came in.

Head to the opposite corner of the Main Hall and exit out the lower-left. The only thing of interest here is the GunShock Wave weapon for Lucca. Leave, then head to the exit that leads left. Grab the BladeStar Sword and make your way back into the main hall.

Go into the door that leads down-left, go through the lower exit but don't go into the hall that leads to the button. Instead, follow the very narrow strip that heads to the left and circle around the whole thing. When you get to a dead end, search around there for awhile and you'll enter a hole that will lead to another weapon for Frog, the SwordDemon Hit. Afterwards, leave to the main area, heading for the exit that leads down, available now that you pressed the button.

Make your way through the stairs and platforms, fighting Thrashers and Lashers as you go. At one point, the stairs will be clogged with them - if you make sure you don't touch any (i.e. run through as they jump), you'll save yourself a combat. When you get the bottom, Masa will be waiting for you. The Queen will raise the Mammon Machine again, and Schala will fall over. Save your game.

The next room is an elevator with many combats on the way down. These combats include all different Scouters, Thrashers, Lashers, Jinns, and Barghests, so be prepared.

When you get to the bottom, you'll enter a room with a button. However, this button can't be activated until you press two switches, one in each room located to the right and left. Head there, fight the enemies, then come back and stand on the button. Go across the bridge and get the Elixir from the chest, then use a Shelter and save. Be sure you saved, because once you go through the door, you'll meet Dalton, who will summon a very difficult boss.

Strategy
There are many different ways to approaching these two Twins. Unlike the Golem you fought at the Zeal Palace, you must defeat these twins—Schala and Janus aren't going to rescue you this time. One approach is to give Lucca the ArmorTaban Vest, which raises fire protection, and give your other two party members the ArmorRed Vest and ArmorRed Mail. Thus, the whole party is at least partially protected from fire. Then, have Lucca cast OFire 2 or OFlare over and over again until they're defeated. You can do the same thing with the other elements as long as you have the corresponding armor. Giving Lucca the accessory that lowers MP cost by 75%, the Gold Stud, is also recommended.

Afterwards, move ahead and you'll encounter the Queen and her counsel. Masa and Mune will drive the Ruby Knife into the Mammon Machine, but it will summon Lavos regardless. In the proceeding battle with Lavos, you will almost certainly be annihilated - this is expected.

The prophet will reveal himself as Magus, eager to destroy Lavos. Unfortunately for him, when he attacks, Lavos counters and drains his powers. The Queen appears and taunts Crono as he challenges Lavos, but manages to save time for his friends as his body fades away. Afterwards, Schala will teleport everyone out of the Ocean Palace as it crumbles.

Your remaining party members will wake up in the remains of the Earthbound Village, sans Crono. The elder will give you the pendant and tell you that Epoch is alright, but nobody has seen Schala. You'll be given the opportunity to change your party - Ayla is almost a necessity. Save your game and leave the hut. You're now in the last surviving village in the era.

There's a Nu in one of the huts that sells goods. He'll leave the hut occasionally, giving you the opportunity to grab the tab behind him. In the Commons, talk to all the people, who could be motivational speakers after a disaster like that. However, upon talking to the Elder, Dalton will appear with his cronies. Like the maniac he is, he insists that the Epoch is his and captures the party.
