Subjective Analysis
The Thief has some nice abilities that help you acquire many rare items and support the team. They are poor fighters, however, as they lack good weaponry and attack stats. Being a Thief feels a lot like using a Squire for a bit too deep into the game, but with less offense and defense. It's a good class to hold onto just long enough to get the best abilities and to unlock better physical classes down the line, like Ninja.
The steal abilities are a requirement if you want to get all the rare items that bosses drop late in the game. Their only action ability that is really practical for all battles is Steal Heart, which charms an enemy of the opposite sex (monsters in the game have no gender so they can be charmed by a male or female thief). Poach is required for poaching monsters to get rare items. Move +2 is definitely the best ability in the set, useful to every character for just about every typical battle.
