Status Changes
Final Fantasy IX brings forward a number of party-impacting status changes that were either new to the series or changed just enough to make them potentially confusing to gamers. Here's a brief guide to what each positive and negative status does to help clarify.
Auto-Life
Characters with Auto-Life will be revived with one HP after being KO'd. This status goes away after being used or at the end of battle.
Berserk
Berserked characters will be out of control, but will not attack allies. Berserked characters can use only physical attacks. Gysahl Greens and Remedy can remove Berserk status.
Confuse
Confused characters will be out of control and will tend to target their allies. Confusion can be removed by a physical attack from ally or enemy, or by using a Remedy. The ability Clear Headed can prevent the status from taking hold.
Darkness
Physical attack efficacy is reduced due to blindness until cured. Eye Drops can cure Darkness.
Float
The affected character will hover above the ground until the effect wears off or the battle ends. This will nullify any Earth-type damage.
Freeze and Heat
These statuses are the same, differing only in which creatures cast which on the party. Both will cause the character to be KO'd if they attempt to take a turn, and both can be prevented with Body Temp.
Haste
The ATB gauge for the affected character will fill more quickly until the effect wears off or the battle ends.
KO
KO'd characters are "dead" and can take no action, nor receive EXP or AP.
Mini
Mini characters are, naturally, shrunken, which reduces their ability to both attack physically and defend. Mini can add and remove the status.
Petrify
Petrify is like Stop, but a bit nastier because it doesn't expire. It must be removed using Soft or Stona.
Poison
Causes the character's HP to slowly drain. Can be removed with Panacea, Remedy or Antidote, and can be prevented with Antibody.
Protect
Physical attacks will be less effective until the effect wears off or the battle ends.
Reflect
Magical attacks will be reflected back at the caster until the effect wears off or the battle ends.
Regen
The character's HP will restore intermittently until the effect wears off or the battle ends.
Shell
Magical attacks will be less effective until the effect wears off or the battle ends.
Silence
Silenced characters can not use magical abilities until cured. Echo Screens can remove the status.
Sleep
Similar to Stop, sleeping characters can not defend themselves and their ATB gauge will not fill. Unlike Stop, both a Remedy and a physical attack will remove the status. Insomniac is the preventative ability for Sleep.
Slow
This status slows the character's ATB gauge, giving them fewer turns over time. This status can be removed only by time or end of battle.
Stop
Stopped characters will be unable to defend themselves or take action until the effect wears off or is countered with a Remedy. Locomotion can block Stop.
Trouble
Troubled characters pass their damage on to other characters - the rest of the party will take a small percentage of the damage inflicted on the Troubled character unless cured. Annoyntment cures Trouble status.
Vanish
Invisible characters are immune to physical attacks until the effect wears off.
Venom
A nastier version of Poison, Venom will stop the character from taking actions, drain HP and MP, and persists after battle. Like Poison, Venom can be removed with Panacea, Remedy or Antidote, and can be prevented with Antibody.
Virus
Characters with Virus can't receive EXP or AP for any battle until it's cured. Can be cured with Vaccine.
Zombie
Zombied characters won't receive EXP or AP until cured, and curative items and spells will damage the character. Can be cured with Magic Tag.
