Biography

Written by  Super Moogle

One of the two "secret" characters of the game, Yuffie is a self-professed materia hunter who scours the world for the valuable artifacts, sometimes taking them out of the hands of unsuspecting travelers. She is a direct descendant of a ninja clan and has adopted their fighting arts as her own, though her disposition seems to contradict the wise subtlety and storied tradition typical of her kind.

Young and impetuous, Yuffie often comes accross as sneaky, self-centered, and arrogant. Though she has a very cunning and capable mind, she can sometimes act very immature or childish. Her presence draws a natural suspicion from Cloud and his friends, for Yuffie clearly has any number of ulterior motives for joining their cause. But in time, they begin to trust Yuffie despite her faults, and she in turn begins to treat them as friends - human beings instead of objects to manipulate.

By all appearances, it seems that Yuffie's bond to the group is a purely mercenary one; she's only in it for the money and the materia. Eventually, however, it is revealed that her selfish motivations have a deeper side to them...

Additional Information

The party eventually learns that Yuffie hails from Wutai, a deeply traditional village with its roots in a legacy of honor and nobility. It is
this same legacy that drives Yuffie, whose strong feelings of nationalism motivate her to do what she does, for better or for worse.

Long ago, Wutai was a powerful and prosperous city, with considerable political influence. The extent of their strength was exemplified by a strong warrior tradition in which the people took great pride.

Unfortunately, this all came to an end during Yuffie's childhood. Petty differences sparked a futile war between Wutai and Shinra, with the technologically advanced mega-corporation as the obvious victor. Upon
winning the conflict, Shinra quickly went to work claiming the village itself as the spoils.

In a desperate barter for peace, Wutai's leader Godo allowed Shinra to use the village as a sort of vacation resort. Utterly humiliated, the people could only watch in despair as Shinra transformed their noble community into a simple tourist trap, leaving a mere shadow of the beauty and grace that was once their culture.

Yuffie, Godo's daughter, resented this state of affairs most of all. Enchanted by tales of Wutai's past and disgusted with the hollow reality of its present, Yuffie firmly believed that her father had saved the town's body at the cost of its soul. Angry and disillusioned, the young girl decided to use her ninja skills as a materia hunter. If she could gather enough powerful materia, she reasoned, she might be able to restore the village to its former glory. It is toward this end that she travels the land and coincidentally encounters AVALANCHE.

Sometime during their journey, Cloud and his friends are diverted by a sub-quest of sorts that provides a lot of background for Yuffie and tests her loyalties towards the party. While traveling around the westernmost continent, Yuffie interrupts the group and abruptly steals all of their materia, running off in the direction of Wutai. A lengthy search ensues, leading into a brief adventure involving Godo, the Turks, and the infamous Don Corneo. Though Yuffie makes moves to betray her friends several times, at the end she decides to stick around after all, returning all of the stolen materia and rejoining the party.
