Biography
Gestahl is the cruel emperor of the Gestahlian Empire (really), which he rules from its capital, Vector. Gestahl's rule has been asserted by the Empire's mastery of magic-using technology, including the creation of Magitek Armor, the creation of magic-enhanced soldiers like Kefka and Celes, and the imprisonment and exploitation of Espers. Gestahl is first seen in one of Terra's flashbacks early in the game, and is one of the major antagonists of Final Fantasy VI.Gestahl appears to be Final Fantasy VI's primary antagonist, especially after he fakes a peace treaty, frees Kefka from jail, and orders the killing of several friendly espers in addition to General Leo. After Kefka and Gestahl meet Celes and the rest of the party face to face on the Floating Continent, Kefka betrays Gestahl, killing the emperor and throwing the statues' alignment out of whack. Before this, a flashback reveals that Gestahl discovered an unconscious Maduin, a dying Madeline, and an infant Terra outside the Sealed Cave, beginning Terra's career as an enslaved Imperial weapon.
