I just work with speed and distance.
Ninja's Lancers Geomancers Squire Ramza this is my team usually, with mustadio as well all of these classes have pretty good range of attack and at least better than average speed (except the lancer, but with javelin II, who cares if hes a little slower?) |

I see that this thread doesn't frequently get attention, however...
My favorite tactic involves my two favorite classes using all my favorite abilities, along with my personal character preferences that have developed over the years of reading and writing fantasy-related literature and playing videogames. Here's the run down: I created two characters; Shinka and Tobias (my two original characters that I felt deserved to be FFT creations -- Shinka is an assassin and Tobias is a wizard) I took my favorite aspects of Final Fantasy, such as the dragoon-aspect of the Lancers, and the things that hold true to my original characters, such as thievary/high speed and evasion, and used those as a basis for my characters. Then I developed two killing machines. Shinka: Throw, Jump, Blade Grasp, Equip Sword, Teleport Tobias: Black Magic, Draw Out, Blade grasp, Two Swords, Teleport -- Shinka is equipped with: Chaos Blade (40 attack + regen), Excalibur (21 attack + haste), Thief Hat (100 HP, +2 Speed), Secret Clothes (20 HP, +2 Speed), Feather Mantle (40 Phys. Ev, 30 Mag. Ev) His natural growth has been mostly ninja, and although I'm too tired to do the math, I assure you he is very fast. He begins a jump, and lands it almost instantly, doing loads of damage with that Choas Blade (true, a JavelinII would deal more damage if I just stuck out as a Lancer, but the jumps would be slower and I'd be down regen and haste, and the original-character aspect that Shinka was based apon.) On top of that, your typical attack has a 1% chance of hitting him, and he can easily teleport behind enemies and across the screen if the chance of landing a jump in time seems unlikely; doing mass damage with his normal physical attack. Plus, with all the extra speed, his throw ability can dish out some nice damage as well. He's got 97 brave and 3 faith, so magic does nill, and his high avoidability means that he rarely ever takes any damage, making up for his lack of HP. He uses the Steal job interchangeably with Jump, depending on my mood. I often times use Steal Heart to pit enemies against each other, create a frog farm, or stall to allow my other characters to level. And the steal command works wonders for nabbing that rare equipment, or disabling Orlandu's all-powerful petty sword tricks, were someone to challange Shinka with Orlandu. Tobias is equipped with: Wizard Rod (+2 Mag), Wizard Rod (+2 Mag), Holy Miter (+1 Mag), Wizard Robe (+2 Mag), Magic Gauntlet (+2 Mag) His natural growth has been in wizard, and the magic attack that shows up on his onscreen stats is 21. Most maps are small enough to cross with one successful teleport. If not, then two. But typically he can make it in one. He's rather speedy, as against popular belief, wizards have decent speed growth, and usually pulls up his turn before the typical enemy can make a move (but not before Shinka, who can pull out two moves before the enemy gets a turn). That said, he can teleport into the middle of a group at the start of battle before they have had a chance to scatter, and then pulls out a very damaging draw-out, bringing most enemies to their knees, if not instantly killing them. He also doesn't typically have to worry about dying before his next turn, because the average attack has only a 5% chance of connecting with the brave little wizard, meaning he can sit in the middle of a group of half-killed enemies and not worry about recieving any damage. If he does take any damage, it would typically be from an ability that ignores evasion, those of which don't typically take away 300 hp; and the Draw Out skill comes with a handy little healing draw out sword (masamune?) for worst-case scenarios. The two can clean up a large group of enemies, often times before the opposing side has even got a turn. Now, obviously you could build up a counter-party to these two, but I haven't encountered a CPU-controlled battle that was built to withstand the awesome might of my speedy tag team. So screw wasting fifty turns having Ramza scream at himself; and forget about all out physical units like knights or monks. I've always been a fan of speed. And these two get the job done. However, there are times when one of these two meets an unfortunate end. That's where the rest of my party comes in. Ramza and a character I wittingly dubbed "Kitty" are both bards with the Sunken State Reaction ability; and my final character is a female Mediator with Calculator skills that I named Pie-chan in honor of my lovely lady friend. Kitty and Ramza both start singing songs of speed (Cheer Song) at the start of the battle, and Pie-chan puts them both in Sunken State. This makes my already speedy pair even quicker, so if the battle should take longer than one turn, they will steadily be building up speed. Then Pie-chan hides behind the two invisible singers, and provides support to my two speedy aforementioned units. Should Either Shinka or Tobias fall, Pie-chan just calculates a raise to bring them back. The downfall to that being that Raise almost always misses my low-faithed Shinka, and his speed would cause him to crystalize quickly. Not that I usually have to worry, for even if Shinka dies, Tobias can finish the fight in no-time flat, and the only thing that's done any damage to my precious Shinka was a feather bomb and a dash. I've always preferred to use the characters I've developed throughout the game as opposed to plot-oriented characters like Orlandu and the like. Although I'm sure my tag team could take even the best Orlandu build. Let's face it, any character you could create would have to be specifically built to defend against these two; and that leaves little room to devise a good counter attack. Not that I'm doubting it could be done, with some effort. So there you have it. I've always been a fan of speed and dealing damage without taking any. Were the 'assassin' class available in FFT, I would most assuredly have an army of them. (Ironically, I have just that in FFTA -- An army of very capable assassins. Though I much prefer FFT, assassins or no). And I've managed to adapt my roleplaying, story-starring assassin and wizard into one of my most treasured videogames. It all works wonderfully, in my opinion. Have at you. .. Also keep in mind that I don't spend all my time devising the perfect killing machines, and what have you. I based my speedy tag team off original characters of mine that seemed to translate nicely into the world of FFT. I'm sure someone would have probably even posted these, or similar variations of these, on previous threads, but I felt like posting them all the same. Well, your 'assassin' build seems very deadly...I assume they're lvl 99?
Well here's mine. I don't use many tactics, but this pair really stands out in sheer devastating power and speed. Reis: lvl 99, knight. White Magic, Two Swords, Counter, Move+2. Chaos Blade, Ragnarok, Maximillian, Grand Helmet, Bracer. Ramza: lvl 99, monk. Throw, Two Swords, Counter, Move+3. Power Sleeve, Bracer, Twist Headband. Reis inflicts 999 damage x 2 with her two swords, and so does Ramza. -------------------- --CounterStriker as much as FF (x)-er-- Reis owns all! Possibly more deadly than Orlandu at lvl 99. Yes, I got social skills of a rock. And I'm proud of it. Damn straight, I don't really trust people, even though I'm human myself. Even I don't trust myself sometimes. Gah! this is getting nowhere. |

I must say, Shinka, I love your Wizard set-up. Total destruction by way of magic rules.

Your setups are pretty solid, Shika, but I really don't understand why anyone in the world would ever have Two Swords and dual Wizard Rods instead of a single Wizard Rod and Magic Attack UP. MA UP gives you 25% more power to virtually all magic-based attacks (including Draw Out skills), and if the character's base MA is greater than 8 than MA UP will always be more effective than dual Wizard Rods. Why does everyone insist on using them when MA UP is so much more effective?
If you want to see some more cool setups, check out these threads: un, deux , trois. Edit Also, a Flash Hat is probably better than a Holy Miter for your Tobias setup. It gives +1 MA and +1 Speed. This post has been edited by laszlow on 28th May 2006 14:31 -------------------- |

You know, laszlow, I never really considered that. =o
Probably silly of me to overlook something so useful... I guess when I created Tobias, I concentrated more on the numbers that show up on the stat screen, and totally forgot about the fact that a decent support ability could land better results. And for someone obsessed with speed, I dunno how I managed to miss the Flash Hat... I'll have Shinka steal one immediately. =P Thanks. ~ ![]() -------------------- "And then, when you're not looking, I'll use my evil assassin powers to jab you in the gut! Ha!" -Shinka |
