Though the game hasn't already came out yet in either Japan or the US yet, but I managed to download the japanese version of the game yesterday and played it in an emulator, and I was really happy with it.
![]() I liked the new battle backgrounds and the new portraits feature in FF5a. The colors for the portrait look a little washed out, but atleast they looked better than the portraits for FF4a and FF2a. I liked Dorgan's portrait so much. As for music some of them were way too fast that it gets on my nerves, and others had instruments changed into the ones that remind me of FF DoS's music instruments. I did like The Battle and The Fierce Battle alot more now, though. I wish they left the songs the way they were in the SNES because Ahead on our way sounds really faint and not loud and cheerful as it used to be. Even The dragon spreads its wings, The Evil Lord Exdeath, and The Battle with Gilgamesh weren't as great as they used to be back then on the SNES. Atleast they weren't terrible unlike FF4a. I never want to hear those songs again! Graphics look the same as the SNES except with some random brightening on random sprites and tiles that it hurts my eyes so much.. And best part is... NO LAGGING BATTLESYSTEM! Indeed, Square Enix has really improved from their two last GBA remakes of FF classics this time. I'm really proud that my favorite FF didn't get butchered badly. Now to wait for the US release so I can try out the new jobs and bonus dungeon. ![]() |

I like the music and backgrounds a lot more in this version, especially during the SandWorm battle. It's kinda hard playing in Jap, though, since I kinda have to memorize MP cost, shape, location, stats, and whatever of items and magic spells. I've gotten used to it for the most part, but switching between Coral, Flame, and Angel rings is kinda tricky. Same with switching abilities. Luckily, the numbers 4 and 2 are the same in Japanese, otherwise I'd have no clue what X-Fight and Double-swords were. And Giant drink.
![]() They seem to have added a new ATB system, too, unless it was just my imagination. Galuf got two turns before my Lenna had one, and both were of normal status (not hasted, not slowed, no masamune equipped, etc). They usually just changed the starting location of the ATB bar to differentiate between the varying speeds of the characters, but they may've done something different this time. If they did, it's certainly not as drastic as the speed change in FFIV (Edge is freakin' fast!). Oh, and Ex-Death's portrait is the best by far. -------------------- Is PJ |

Well, it's comforting to know that two of CoN's most avid FF V fans approve of what they see of the GBA port. I'll definitely be all over this baby before the year is over.
What I'm most interested in, though, is the new translation. FF IV Advance had probably the best official translation of FF IV in existence, and I personally pray that FF V Advance at least improves on the Anthology version. And before I get into pointless banter about name preferences and whatnot, can't Square just give us a name selection option? Please? -------------------- |

Agreed. I played a few minutes of it as well, and I was definitely satisfied, although they seemed to have butchered the thief dash mechanic again. Square just can't seem to get their heads around the fact that having a preset dash button makes the ability largely useless.
What little I know of the classes actually impressed me. It looks like they're turning them into pretty interesting devices, I just hope that the extra dungeon will be tough enough to warrant some new ass-kickery. -------------------- Oh sure, I don't have to get kicked in the junk to activate it, but I like it anyway. -- Thief commenting on the difference between Throw and Blue Magic. |

I've been playing this game since the day I got the rom, I love the changes, the game seems faster than original, and hard as hell to boot, Ex-death really know's how to play with my level 32 party. Of course he's level 66 so yeah, he'd would woop your butt pretty quickly, even with Golem. When I play the english version, I'm gonna make time to level. So I won't get my butt handed to me 500 times. FFV is fun and a good Challange. I love how they preserved it to make the game it's original difficulty.

It's the same atb gauge as the original SNES version, just a much more revamped look to it. Depending on speed and weight, the new gauge still mimics the original by having a prefilled amount and then just starts filling regularly. |

Well, I'm glad to hear positive reviews so far.
![]() Does the dialogue still go by lightning-fast like FFIVA? Since I doubt you guys are actually reading the dialogue, and I know you two have played the game enough and know the storyline, so I just wonder if you all set the text speed to the fastest. I was just curious. -------------------- |

I was just curious. Yes, I always set the text speed to it's fastest potential. What's also sweet about it is that whenever you get to make a choice, the message comes first, then after pushing a you see a small choice box. I only care about the dialogues because I like seeing the new portraits ![]() |

Well, I think that Square Enix Could have done a much better job with the Portraits in this game.

Quote (Edge1337 @ 15th October 2006 18:23) Well, I think that Square Enix Could have done a much better job with the Portraits in this game. Are you kidding? Those ports rocked. I agree with you on one of them: Lenna. She looked like a potato head doll that lost an eye. But I did like the portrait for Bartz, Drogan, Faris, Galuf, Cara, King Tycoon, Zeza (though the sleepy eyes kinda ruined it), Exdeath, and even Gilgamesh. Also, you don't have to like them. I just don't know why you DON'T like any of them. Have you seen how terrible FF4a's portraits turned out? Rosa, Paladin Cecil, and FuSoYa looked terrible. Rosa had an ugly jewish nose, Cecil looks like 60yrs old Celes, and FuSoYa's long beard looks like a broom. Just look at fruity Yang portrait and say "Froot Loops". ![]() |

The portrait's that I saw in FFV were all pretty nice, except for Leena's. I have to say though, that I enjoyed most of FFIV's portraits, though Rosa's was dissapointing

Lots, really. So much so that I am almost at a loss for what to say concerning them. You obtain them pretty late, but not much later than mime, they're completely optional to obtain, and they're all really fun to mess around with. Two of the jobs come with abilities to raise AP and EXP, as well as abilities that raise and lower the encounter rates.
Edit: Okay, I decided to add some info, spoiler'd in case you don't wish to see it. Its the description of each job, along with the ability sets. Possible spoilers: highlight to view Prophet
The sentences work like "Death Sentence", except with a variety of statuses. There are Recovery, Cure, Fire, Ice, Lightning, Frog, Death, and Stop - they take 20 seconds at job level 1, and 5 seconds once you master Prophet. The prophecies "fortell" disasters much like Bahamut fortells his own attacks. The attacks hurt EVERYONE, much like Merton in FFVI. Cannoner
Bombard is a long range attack that randomly adds statuses, and I have no idea on synthesis. Gladiator
Certain Kill randomly does a critical attack, an elemental attack, or nothing. Supposedly, the elemental attacks are very powerful and if an enemy is weak to the particular element, this is an instant kill. The elements depend on the character - Butz gets wind, Lenna water, Faris fire, and Krile gets Earth. Rear Attack is a passive ability, while Area Attack turns your normal attack into an attack that strikes all enemies. Necromancer
Darkness is a new kind of spell category, not sure where you get them from, but there are a total of 10 spells - two from each level. Covenant works like Animals, summons a random undead and causes an effect. The Undead ability works like the bonemail - makes your character undead. My thoughts on the extras:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Got up to the bonus dungeon today, called Fuuin no Shinden (roughly translates to Sealed Temple). Haven't actually gotten anywhere, as it seems to be a giant maze. And Teleport is blocked. Figures. But I will continue on! The extra classes: Prophet: Like White Mages, are limited to staves for weapons. But get this: they have the highest base Magic Power, beating the Summoner by just 3 points. Let me just say Death Sentence is fun! Cannoneer: Heh. Love the outfits. They can use swords and daggers, but I haven't really attacked with them. Bombard does decent damage and is back row OK. It can inflict one of four status effects: Death, Confuse, Poison and I'm not sure of the last. Gladiator: Can equip a wide range of weapons: daggers, swords, knight swords, spears, axes and bows. And they can equip shields. Certain Kill rocks. It can result in: Critical (a critical hit), Element Attack (the best result) or it can fail. Element Attack is so powerful it's ridiculous. 9999 damage on anything that doesn't absorb Wind/Water/Earth/Fire (depends on user)? Yes please! -------------------- I'm a general, not some opera floozy! *insert humourous observation here* |

Quote Well actually, at the time, I had only seen Lenna's/ Reina's portrait. I have now seen all of the other ones, and nearly all of them are great.
