I came home from work last night to find this rather long-winded email:

Quote (Guy Who Couldn't Master the Forum Signup or Something)
WTF did I just waste another hour of my life, because of a misprint in an online guide. Your site tells that you can get Cid's Flayer weapon by getting 5,000 points at Speed Square while on Disc 2, much like you can do with Aeris' umbrella(parasol) in Disc 1. However, you don't get anything special on Disc 2, when you do that. How do I know, my top three score are over 5,000 and one of them was completed on Disc 2, yet all I got was another lousy Super Sweeper. Also, the Flayer weapon isn't even mentioned in Bradygames Official Strategy Guide(which isn't perfect, but really well written). Why are you continually teasing players with a nonexistent weapon for Cid, by telling them they have to perform an outlandish challenge just to get. I had to set my turbo controller to turbo speed to keep my blaster energy up while turning on slow mode at the same time to extremely rapidly pause and unpause the game, thereby slowing the game down at the same time. I don't know anyone that has enough time on their hands to master that with a regular ps controller, but believe me, they're pathetic. And don't go telling me that I couldn't get the Flayer cuz I was cheating, cuz I did the same thing to get the Parasol in Disc 1. To every generation is not born a flayer, and WTF is a flayer anyways. Please check on this BS and get back to me, please.

Now, I never claimed to be any sort of FF7 guru - if you look at the FF7 section my name's barely on it. So, you guys answer, and I'll be happy to put the best and/or most amusing answers in an email back to him.

First of all, the Brady Games guide is anything but well written, it leaves out quite a few things and has quite a bit of misinformation.

Secondly, The Flayer is infact a real weapon for Cid. Also, since I recieved it during Disc 2 in the Speed Square when I reached 5000 points, I'm led to believe this guy simply did something wrong, or has no idea what he's doing.

I don't know the actual mechanics behind getting it, so I think someone like Silverlance or Zed should get in here and give their input.

I've always sucked at this, so I checked to see what other FAQs said. The gamefaqs concensus seems to agree with the CoN's information.

Poor guy, I bet this event will haunt him for the rest of his life. But no worries, if he ever gets a girlfriend, he can tell her all about it, and how the evil Con site screwed him out of an hour of his precious Flayer hunting time.

Seriously though, this is reducing me to tears. tongue.gif

Sorry, I'm feeling overly sarcastic at the moment, lol. rolleyes.gif

I can see this kid grow up to be one of those parents that assaults the umpires at his kid's baseball games...

I know a couple of people that have gotten this thing (I can't have that much patience), and I just found a FAQ with the same information. So I dont know what this guy's problems are, but apparently FFVII (along with english) is one of them (by the way, WTF is grammatically incorrect).

We masters are pathetic? The speed square is easy, it doesn't need mastering. He's just a really poor player. E-mail him saying...

As Steiner would say in FFIX - perseverence. Keep at it. I got Flayer on my 6th or 7th 5000 point run. Then I used "Throw" to throw it (amazingly!!!) at Reno. Was well worth it.

Speed square is hard for me cuz I can only play inverted (where pressing up moves the crosshairs down and vice versa), and they don't give you the option to change it.

but I still managed to get a masamune blade smile.gif

actually, i'm almost positive that the problem is that this site (along with the rest of the internet) is neglectful in mentioning that the flayer cannot even be acquired until after the gold saucer has reopened (post-mideel). furthermore, con and the site(s) from which zephir originally apparently plaigiarised phrase-for-phrase the information excaserbate the problem by suggesting that the flayer is "especially useful if acquired early on" -- leading some players to believe that they should get it as soon as disc 2 opens. if anyone can show documentation proving that the flayer can be gotten any time in disc 2, please do so -- otherwise, i am close to being certain that my information is correct and the site should be updated to reflect that (also, if you can, please update the neglectful information by mrthou on the acquisition of the BOLT RING and MITHRIL items, an oversight i pointed out in another thread questioning the site's information).

the other possible issue is that only 1 flayer can be acquired in the whole game, and after you get 5000 pts the first time, you just get shit items for the rest of the times you get 5k+. so maybe he got one, sold it for 15 big ones, and can't ever get it again. note, also:

as elena would say in ffvii, "you can't fool me, liar." the flayer and umbrella are gotten upon completion of the first 5000-point runs, and all subsequent runs give shit items. it is *not* a random prize.

Except that the original post states:

Which rather suggests that he's tried this when the Gold Saucer is open, and that our omission to state that "Getting 5000 points on the Speed Square is not possible when you can't play the Speed Square" has nothing to do with it in this case (though sarcasm aside, an introduction in the Gold Saucer section detailing opening and closing times would probably not go amiss, along with Flayer's item description linking there).

If there is directly plagiarised text on the site, please send an e-mail to me and Rangers51 detailing the text, its location and original sources, and we'll see if we can do something about it.

The Mythril/Bolt Ring issues do not belong in this thread, and I can't see any topics in Comments/Suggestions or Errors/Troubleshooting in which you mention these items, so please post there with further details if you have found an error or omission.

i'm not talking about post-junon. i could have sworn it was possible to leave the forgotten city to the world map and return to previously visited areas before weapon appears (d2), but i'll take your word for it, since i don't have that savefile handy. reading the con walkthrough, i get the impression that cloud won't let you go anywhere *but* north, although i *distinctly* remember being able to go buy more rune armlets before continuing (which would of course allow the player to partake in saucer minigames, as they aren't closed until weapon appears).

i could care less about it, and it's not really plagiarism when you switch up a few words, anyway -- who has original thoughts these days? it just struck me as amusing that several phrases describing thwe gold saucer prise can be found almost word-for-word (and with the meaning in perfect step) on several other sites. surely it's subliminal or coincidental; there is only so much one can say about a certain well-defined facet of a hard-programmed video game.

damn, it's too bad you guys missed it in the thread i posted it in, then, because you've got me really messed up if you think i'm going to flood the boards/pm inboxes with topics or messages related to the simplest of oversights.

To me it just sounds like a person who doesnt get much fresh air but do I know rolleyes.gif

but seriosly why do you need the flayer in th first place I always used the grow lance or the dragoon lance. I save stuff like the ultimate weapons till the end of the game for the challenge. Sure the speed square can be hard but you dont kneed to get your underwear in a twist about it.

You've got me equally messed up if you think I read all the game help threads looking for "please fix this" messages when there's a specific forum for them. I don't personally call it "flooding" to post an error in errors, where it might get picked up as such, but hey.

You may be right about disc 2 though. I always forget about that last chunk of heading north before things really change. It's worth checking out.
