I've always been a fan of Odin. But I think Maduin is pretty b.a. and Tritoch is cool also.

I don't like Espers in FFVI because they can only be used once per character. Though I liked Palidor because he made all of my characters jump without having to equip the Dragon Boots.

I only like Espers for the spells you learn from them. So I like Crusader and Ragnarok the best.

I like Alexander because he is the first character in any game I've every played that shares my name. In addition to him being utter gargantuan compared to the enemies.
I've always like Odin though. And it just so happens that in this game they made Odin left-handed also like me. I suppose that may be another reason I liked Kain in FFIV. You don't see either of those qualities in many warriors in games. It's the little quirks that set them apart. -------------------- "Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. Study hard; be evil." |

Fenrir. My lizard's named after him (Fenris.) It's a shame Square got the name wrong though.
I'm surprised there hasn't been an esper/summon named Tyr or Loki or whatnot yet. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I probably would've voted for Loki if there was one because my first cat was named Loki. Later on when I left home, I got another cat and named it Napoleon. Quite a difference there.
But there is a myriad of different dieties/angelic beings that they could've used. They just tend to stick with the same names for all of them. ::cough:: Ifrit :: cough:: Why couldn't they use Zues, Ra, or Poseidon. They did use Artemis in SNES FFII as the best bow and arrows. Go figure that Artemis was the goddess of war also dubbed "the rainer of arrows." Couldn't really avoid that one I guess. -------------------- "Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. Quote (Silverlance @ 5th February 2006 15:41) Fenrir. My lizard's named after him (Fenris.) It's a shame Square got the name wrong though. Fenrir's more accurate. Anglicized translations of Norse names often changed R to S or subtracted an extra A or R syllable. However, you see both spellings all over the place, and either Fenrir or Fenris should be acceptable if the answer ever came up on Jeopardy!, for instance. And in any case, my favorite esper's probably Tritoch. Decently useful to summon once in awhile, it's the only way to learn Ice 3 and Bolt 3, both of which are fairly useful spells, and it gives a solid Magic Power +2 bonus at level up. Add to that an actually somewhat-plot-relevant role and you have an Esper that is more than just a placeholder. -------------------- |

Uh... no. Fenris is a group. >"< http://www.fenris.nl/
There's no doubt they (Square) payed a tribute to this band, mate. This ain't some norse wolf we're talking about. The sprite used is inspired from "As wolves they came," one of their songs. Nevermind the fact the band was formed way after FF6. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Go figure that Artemis was the goddess of war also dubbed "the rainer of arrows." Couldn't really avoid that one I guess. Wow, you say a number of mythological untruths there. I'll just say that Artemis wasn't a goddess of war, she was a goddess of the hunt. And yes, she had arrows (silver arrows of sleep/death, actually), but I have never heard of the epithet "the rainer of arrows" before. And to answer your first question, FF does draw from several different mythologies, and it just so happens that some of their earlier summons/mythological interpretations (ie Ifrit, which you seem to have some sort of problem with) became traditions of sorts. As to why they don't use Zeus (or Zues), Ra, or Poseidon, well, your guess is as good as mine. The "Mace of Zeus" is a weapon in a number of FF games, and Triton (Poseidon and Amphitrite's son) makes some appearances in name, but it's not like they're deliberately ignoring any particular god or goddess - the names they used early on stuck. If you really want to see games that refuse to change mythological references, play the Tales games. They've used almost exactly the same lineup of summons (mostly drawn from Norse myth, but a number of others, including the Arabic Ifrit/Efreet) in every single game in the series. -------------------- |

Bahamut I mean, he is the Dragon God! And his attack is one of the most powerfull attacks in the game, and teaches Flare, wich is quite great.

I really liked Ramuh's sprite when you met him and he talked to your party. He was adorable! so yeah, probably my favorite in terms of storyline.
In a past life I'd say I love Ragnarok, but I'm currently working on beating the game with minimal magic and minimal leveling up... so I'm learning to figure out what can work. |

Hmm, Fenrir was one of the Espers I used more often. I like image really well (its one of the status effects of Mirage Vest, and there is no magic that can simulate image). Golem is also pretty nice.

It just goes to show you the quality of the public school system. I don't really have an issue with how much they use Ifrit, Shiva, etc. I just thought it would be kind of nice to cycle around since there are so many different names they could use. Trust me, if it really bothered me that much about the games, I wouldn't play them anymore. But of course, I still play them fairly frequently. -------------------- "Knowledge is power. Depends in which way you mean. In coolness factor, Jihad/Crusader is really cool.
For powerful/most used, then I'd say Bahamut. And for spells, then I'd say Tritoch. Stick that thing on Relm and BOOM! |
