Lionel Castle Gate

This is another rough one, but there are a few battle strategies that can make this a lot easier. First, you can give Ramza the Teleport ability and help him escape from the gates right away, rendering Gaffgarion useless until you choose to go after him, and also giving you a more fair fight against the six troops outside hitting your four support troops. This requires some significant grinding much earlier in the game, so it might not be your cup of tea.

The Ignore Elevation movement ability would also help Ramza get outside of the gate quickly. This is a little easier to get than Teleport but still not something you'll likely have organically.

Another path is to have Ramza as a Monk (or just have the secondary skills) and teach him Chakra, which will heal damage given to him without costing any MP. Also, this map is almost entirely flat, which could give him the ability to reach outside the gate with Shockwave. Especially if combined with Auto-Potion, this makes it very unlikely that Gaffgarion could take out Ramza.

If your Ramza has a good movement stat, you can also cat-and-mouse this battle by getting as far out of range as you can and using Tailwind and Focus to buff him up until he's overpowered on both speed and attack. This takes a while but if your outside party can survive long enough, it can make the mop-up work go a lot faster.

A final option that can be combined with any other ideas is to maneuver Ramza to the wooden panel by the side of the gate. It's not made clear by the game, but this panel is the lever to open the gate. Once the gate is open, all of the characters on the battlefield can go either direction, allowing your party to support Ramza in eliminating Gaffgarion or vice-versa.

For your party outside the gate, use a trick - put your weaker party members on the front line. Since this battle is an ambush, it will put at least another tile of distance between them and the enemy, and have your stronger fighters close to the flank attack.

Either way, you'll want to kill the Summoner as quickly as possible because the area for fighting is small and your troops will likely be grouped closely together. Arm Shot will work well but the sooner you can kill him, the better. After that, try to weaken a group of enemies with a summon of your own and concentrate your main attackers on one enemy at a time, healing if necessary. It's another battle where if you can persist through the first few turns, the tide can turn quickly. At the end, go and finish off Gaffgarion once and for all. If the battle turns your direction, it's another good chance to collect crystals.

Coming up next is another immediate and difficult battle, so saving in a new slot is advised to avoid getting stuck.
