Definitely choose to save the chocobo in this battle - when you win, he can join your party and lay eggs which sometimes creates red and black chocobos, which can be really handy if you want to experiment with leveraging monsters in your battle party (or, if you're a sociopath pragmatist and like to raise animals to poach later in the game for their drops).Taking on monsters has very little downside if you are playing the enhanced War of the Lions version, which grants you more available slots in your party.

This battle is a cakewalk. Simply bring along your most powerful characters and a Black Mage with Blizzard spells and it's pretty much over. Gaffgarion and Agrias will walk through the goblins, and with Ice-elemental attacks, you can't lose. Not much preparation is needed, but be sure to try to get to Boco as soon as you can because the Black Goblin can hurt him if they pin down the bird, though unless they attack in numbers it isn't a big deal since Boco can heal himself.

A major change is about to impact your party, and your life will be far easier if you prepare for it. To find out exactly what's about to happen, make sure you turn spoilers to visible.
