Sidequest: Envy and Vengeance in Lionel
The original version of Final Fantasy Tactics included the story of Beowulf and Reis but the history of how they ended up where you meet them was mostly buried in their Personae entries. For War of the Lions, a new questline opens up in the very late game for players who have both characters still in the party.
Upon entering, Reis and Beowulf will have a scene in a field overlooking Lionel. They reminisce about their time in their homeland and how a man named Bremondt was responsible for their brandings as heretics. Beowulf leaves to see if Ramza needs him for their next travel, but before he can get too far, Reis screams in distress. Beowulf returns to her location, but the only person left is a man named Aliste who says that she has been taken to Bremondt. Make sure Beowulf is equipped well, as a battle is about to begin and he is a guest in it.
Lionel Castle Gate
You only have four slots here, but that's because Beowulf is coming along as a guest. Unlike some previous battles with him as a guest, Beowulf cannot be KOed or the battle ends. The gate here is open, unlike your last visit long ago, so you don't have to worry about anybody pushing buttons.
Aliste shares Beowulf's skillset, so you know what you're in for. He starts atop the castle, but seems to target Beowulf exclusively in this battle, particularly with the Disable skill, so don't be surprised if Beowulf doesn't really have anything to do in the battle. If you have a way to heal that status, you can keep Aliste busy for the entire fight, which can be very useful. Otherwise, charge in and take out his henchmen if you like, or attack Aliste when he inevitably teleports right in the thick of things with your entire party. He comes equipped with the Shirahadori skill, which means that you'll have a lot of trouble hitting him with physical attacks. So, you'll need to rely on magic-based attacks to do the most damage to him, but your physical units can still work on the supporting enemies. Once you kill him, he does get back up with just 1 HP remaining, but that's just a small setback. He can take a lot of damage, but he really can't deal it out, so this should be an easy battle.
Aliste has a number of good things to steal, so if the opportunity should arise, liberate him of it. Balthier's Piracy skills, more often successful than standard stealing, can be very useful in this and the battle coming next.
After the fight, Aliste will reveal that this was some misguided way of getting Beowulf to give his old friend a warrior's death instead of slowly dying from a terminal illness. Uh… okay, you do you, champ.
Lionel Castle Oratory
Bremondt is inside of Lionel Castle, clearly freaking out and very agitated. He has an army of women surrounding him, and another Ninja enters to warn him of your group coming in to massacre everyone. Shortly thereafter, your group enters, and the battle begins.
There are a lot of enemies to deal with here, so take it slowly. Bremondt himself is not a huge threat, as he will likely just try to revive anybody that you kill, so your first targets should be the two Ninjas. After that, take out the Samurai who is not equipped with the
Masamune, as you're going to want to steal that for yourself. The Mystics shouldn't pose any threat at this state, especially if you have someone around to cure any status that they might impose. All of the enemies in this battle have some sort of decent equipment, though, so check them all over before killing them off, and if you can have multiple thieving characters around, use them to best effect. Any equipment you can steal will of course weaken the target, so several successful steals in the course of the battle will make the rest of the battle easier.
Stealing the
Masamune in this battle is the only way to obtain one outside of Midlight's Deep, so definitely corner her and go for the weapon. She's going to be blasting your characters with Samurai skills as she does so, though, so definitely make sure you can heal damage in a range.
Bringing Bremondt to critical status will end the fight, but will also begin the fight anew with all characters maintaining their status and position.
Lionel Castle Oratory
Similar to the fight against Belias, Bremondt will transform into a monster when he takes enough damage. Here, you are against him in his Dark Dragon form. Unlike to the fight against Belias, though, this one is pretty much a joke. Though Bremondt is plenty strong, you're only against him in the fight, and he will really only use his Breath attacks that can only hope to deal damage to two of your party members at most.
Surround him and unleash your most powerful attacks, taking note to heal if you get too low from his Breath attacks or any counters. He's got over 3000 HP in this form, so it may take awhile, but he'll never be able to deal enough damage to a strong party to be a real threat.
Once you've killed him, he will turn back into a human and perish. You'll see a scene in which Beowulf rescues Reis. Because everyone with an axe to grind against them is now dead, they're finally safe from anyone chasing them. Curiously, you'll be asked to re-invite Beowulf and Reis into your party. There is no more additional content that requires them to come along, but they're still strong and loyal party members, so bring them along unless you have a desire to fill your party with monsters this late in the game.
