It's the Final (Fantasy) Countdown
It's Square-Enix up to their usual shenanigans of giving us a mysterious page with a countdown clock and supposedly relevant info to the new game at hand. Sources suspect a remake of the original Final Fantasy, possibly on the Nintendo DS. This news poster is not so convinced. Unless they're introducing new music, the song that plays over the countdown page is not from any Final Fantasy so far (Unless it's from XI, in which case, nobody cares). The obvious reality? They're preparing to unveil Final Fantasy XV.
...What? You never know. Square-Enix also copyrighted "The Four Warriors of Light" (Well, the Japanese phrase, anyway), so believe what you will. It's fair to say that this is going to be Final Fantasy related, regardless of what it actually is. Only 220 hours to go.

I like the ideas of FFI for DS or even FFXV sounds plausible, but what if it might be a new franchise? SE has made a few more new IP's over the last few years (Last Remnant, The world ends with you, etc), so im thinking it might be something like that with an aire of FF through the music and design (background picture). There is always the chance of something Chrono Trigger related...i thought i heard they renewed the rights to the game, but still the scenery and music dont seem to correlate. We'll probably see better-placed ideas as the background picture is further revealed (im sure it will be over time...) EDIT: My personal preferance would be to see an FFVI or FFV DS (OH YEAH!)...maybe a new 8/16-bit FF like Capcom did with Mega Man!!!

The music sounds totally not like Yasunori Mitsuda (as far as my not-so-much-but-still-quite musical ear tells me), so I wouldn't expect anything Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross related. More like Uematsu, so I guess Final Fantasy is a more likely option. I guess we'll see on July 6.

Hmm.... The fact that the song is done in limited tones like in an old videogame makes me think remake, yet I don't recall having ever heard this... And I think it's too simple to make a decent guess as to who composed it. Maybe some "return to it's roots" type thingy?

I'm not thinking clearly at the moment. What's the big 4 for?

Quote (sweetdude @ 27th June 2009 13:05) I'm not thinking clearly at the moment. What's the big 4 for? You know what, I'm not sure either... at first I thought it was the day that the announcement would come out, but then I did the math and realized it is the sixth (or I could have just looked above...). Quote so im thinking it might be something like that with an aire of FF through the music and design (background picture). I'm gonna say that makes the most sense to me. I just don't recognize this tune from anything I've played before.

A sequel to FFI? | |

This is intriguing, as usual. But seriously, another countdown clock? This is probably the fifth or sixth countdown of its kind the past 12 months I've seen from game developers. As far as fads go, they probably do their job well, but they're also damn frustrating. EDIT: They're cuckoo for countdown clocks! Sorry, it jumped into my head and I had to let it out.

Heh, love the cocoa puffs ref Laz >D But i wasnt even thinking Sequla to FFI, that would be interesting to see how they attempt that. New 16 or 8-bit FF is looking more and more possible as speculations abound... But yeah, those clocks are getting a little annoying now, even though they were great at first. Maybe they should have them gradually reveal pixels of a picture as the seconds count down, and if not pixels then like a gradual wipe or something. Maybe they could be gradually more interactive as the picture is revealed, adding on links to seperate pictures or whatever (like what the bioshock 2 teaser site for example...)

As far as fads go, they probably do their job well, but they're also damn frustrating. That's the thing. I'm still not sure why they do it. I'd be tempted to just write it off as another way of generating interest prior to the official announcement of whatever sordid game they're wanting us to buy next, but maybe there's another reason. I genuinely now believe they think fans like this kind of thing. It's like a friend telling everyone we're going out tonight but not telling you where, just bring your swimsuits. It generates a bit of talk but it's done with the audience's best interest in mind. I don't know if they're right or not. I certainly don't care one way or another unless it's something that isn't a JRPG; I think I've had my lifetime's fill. Maybe fans really do get a kick out of all this and Square-Enix are doing it for fun's sake. Maybe I'm just feeling really generous today.
yelanates | Comment 14: 2009-06-28 23:59 |
Well, the loading bar is the blue color that is commonly associated with Final Fantasy (I), and the picture is of a bridge (although also of two houses), so it is possible... We shall see.
BlitzSage | Comment 15: 2009-06-29 01:40 |
Man yelanates I never would have looked that closely at it. But about the countdown clocks, they always frustrate me, but that's what they're supposed to do. It's sort of like someone telling you, "you will be attacked, in 100 hrs." for the next 100 hrs., you're anticipating when it's gonna happen, you know. It gives them enough time to get a lot of people watching, instead of having some random announcement with only a few people watching. They tell us, and then we tell other people, and then they have a larger audience to announce that new game that they may not spend much advertising on.
