Final Fantasy III in 3D for PC
Being on Steam, the game will also get an achievement system laid into the gameplay, and will have Steam Cloud support for cloud storage of saved games and user settings for portability. The listing also advertises controller support, which seems like a no-brainer but will certainly improve the game's playability.
There's no release date and no price point yet, but it seems reasonable to think that a realm of $20.00 or so could be the target, with the less-advanced ports of Final Fantasy VII and VIII listing at $13.00 right now. This game's release could even be a precursor to a release of Final Fantasy IV 3D, given that the DS version was developed by the same team as III; additionally, both games have had similar iOS and Android releases that would likely make a port to Windows easier. Like I said, this could be pretty big news for fans of classic and less-exposed Final Fantasy games!

Interesting. The Ys series is on Steam, and now Final Fantasy. And might I even add Castlevania, despite it not being an RPG series nor having what it's famous for on Steam, but still... I wonder how long exclusivity lasts for console releases...depending on that, it's also quite possible that a lot of PS1/PS2-era RPGs backcatalogue items might end up on Steam in a couple decades or so. I was recently in a conversation on a Steam community forum thread about just this. I haven't picked up FF7 or FF8 on Steam yet, but FF3...I might really have to think about that. I played that halfway on the NES and enjoyed it.

I bought FF3 on my cell phone (the DS version) awhile ago and haven't beaten it yet. This is my second attempt through the game, the first being a fan-translated version of the Famicom game. This might be the most tedious installment in the franchise, and the only one I've started that I never completed. Everytime my class becomes useful I get new classes, or I've got to make all my characters mini again and teach them magic when I've just spent hours grinding warriors. I've heard the last dungeon is unforgiving too. Maybe I'll carve out some time to beat the game just to say I did it, but doing so doesn't give me enjoyment the way playing through other FFs has.

I wonder if they would be open to doing a total overhaul remake, the way Ys: the Oath in Felghana is a total overhaul of Wanderers from Ys. Basically, keep the basic gist of the plot, the cast, and the events, but redesign the way they play out, from the ground up, giving a chance to completely redesign segments like the mini dungeons. Considering that they've recently started to give names to the onion kids and stuff, this seems unlikely.

Late to the party by a couple of weeks, but this could be very nice! My FFIIIj experience has been limited to Famicom and Fan-Translation emulation, and while it was fun enough, it sadly never caught my attention. Excepting FFI, for whatever reason, the installments in the series that focus on job juggling and/or exploitation (I, III, V) just never drew me in. From what I've seen of the newer version, though, they gave the good ol' Onion Kids some actual backstory. While this, I'm sure, isn't everyone's cup of tea (or onion soup), I'm interested. What I've seen of the cutscenes on YouTube are gorgeous. Hm. And maybe it's just spitting in the ocean, but if such ports do well, I wonder what the likelihood might eventually be for other games that haven't gotten remakes yet to get some love...?

Quote (ChickenFriedChocobo @ 28th May 2014 00:49) And maybe it's just spitting in the ocean, but if such ports do well, I wonder what the likelihood might eventually be for other games that haven't gotten remakes yet to get some love...? You could make the argument that this is why we got FF3 on DS in the first place, I think! I assume you're thinking of 3D remakes, here, from sprite-based games. I suppose that it could be a precedent, but I wouldn't put too much faith in it until we see if FF4 gets a PC port too or if another game gets a 2/3DS version, since that seems to be the flow set forth by FF3. ... did that make any sense? I'm not yet awake.

Made perfectly good sense to me. But then, I just woke up myself, and the coffee has not yet reached my brain-meats, so there's that. And yeah, I do mean 3D remakes of sprite games. I would love to see a voice-acted, cut-scene-riddled, glorious and gorgeous revisit of FFVI. I know that's basically like trying to believe in Santa Claus as an adult, but hey. Hope springs eternal and all of that.

For anyone that didn't snatch this one up on DS or iOS, then get it here, I'd say. However, this has presented any reason for me to get it again. It doesn't look that much better than the DS version, and they didn't really add anything, so yeah. Pretty direct, more polished port. Which is rad. I hope they make money and garner more support for the company. But if you already got, leave it be. I find III's all right, but nothing to write home about. I do love seeing the groundwork it laid out for V and Tactics, and now even Bravely Default. Thanks, FFIII!

I don't get it why FF3? I know we begged for years till we got it but it wasn't the best in the series by far

This is my favourite FF game, but I'm not sure if I need this version when I've already played on FMC and DS. Might get it when the price goes down.
