No Final Fantasy VII Remake until Series Improves

Final Fantasy VII
Square Enix CEO, Yoichi Wada, has told shareholders that the company won't be remaking Final Fantasy VII until such time as the franchise produces a new installment which surpasses the fan favourite. This statement was made hand-in-hand with the admission that recent Final Fantasy games have been inferior and that a remake at this point would imply that the franchise is finished. It's open to debate whether or not any Final Fantasy game has passed this benchmark to date, but it appears Wada certainly doesn't think so.

It remains to be seen whether this strengthens or weakens the recent rumours of a PC re-release, as reported previously, but one thing is for certain - we won't be seeing a full remake any time soon.

St Khael Oddly enough, I agree with their reasoning for doing this. The recent games are lovely but their dungeon quality and story lines have declined. Final Fantasy XII, I believe, would have surpassed VII if not for the unruly game mechanics. I truly hope that they put their heads together and give us something to rave about soon, but with the advent of the new century, gaming companies have stopped focusing on the quality of the game itself beyond amazing graphics. Unfortunately Square Enix got caught up in this problem as well and had to produce the graphics quality that has come to be expected by younger gamers and stopped focusing on what was important to the older generation: the story. Now, they need to produce something that will gain the attention of the younger players that will bring them into the franchise in a different way, beefing sales and turning attention back to the genre.

After the failures of Advent Children and the subsequent release of the side games for the VII world, I can see why they'd want to clear away from that particular game. I can imagine that after not living up to the die hard fan's standards, they are nervous to produce something that will disappoint them further and show a drop in sales for the company again. Even after all this, I'm with you, I would love a remake. However, I would want an exact remake, with none of the disappointing story decisions they made for the movie and side games and a well thought out voice cast for the english version. I admit it, I'm terribly picky when it comes to my favored games, and even though VII was not my favorite by a longshot, I still want to see it treated like the gemstone that it is. I'm more than willing to wait for the remake and look forward to the next installment in the series, with the hopes that it will once again bring Final Fantasy to the forefront of gaming.

(Ramble ramble ramble, continue to blather on like a fool, fail to produce a clear idea of what she is talking about, ramble ramble ramble.)
Death PenaltyComment 2: 2012-06-28 04:34
Death Penalty I agree with Wada's statement and St Khael's reasoning behind it. Squenix isn't stupid, despite what many fans may think at times, and they recognize that doing a full console remake of FFVII at a time when the series is without a strong voice is a bit like waving the white flag.

There's been a bit of a dearth of major title news lately - we've seen a lot of mobile stuff lately and some titles which could be termed as 'side' projects. With this relative quiet and Wada speaking so openly, it seems to me that the company is doing internal work to try to get things straight - call back the fleet for full maintenance, if you will.

The company certainly has plenty of options even though the recent past hasn't been too hot; they don't need drastic action like remaking FFVII. What they need is principled action. A remake is a very cloudy endeavor - there are hundreds of questions regarding how closely a remake should shadow the title on which it is based - and as a result I think the most principled way to handle such a remake is to stay away from it until a time when a remake team can have a bit more leway.

TrueBOSS There was a news update a few months ago of someone important from square saying that they wheren't wanting to do a remake of VII because it'd take a long time to remake the time with todays graphics standards and in that time they'd inevitably add to and delete from the story which they feel would more than likely anger the fans. (found the source here -> 12/1/11 Yoshinori Kitase Discusses Remakes Again )

reading this made me realize how much of a hassle it would be for them to make this and reading that square doesn't want to remake VII til it has been bested furthers my belief that a remake would be nice but not as amazing as i used to think it'd be. maybe one day. but i wanna see a new FF game that wows me as much as my first run on VII than just to play VII some more with better graphics.

On a side note. are any of you following the VII remake curious on when they'll also go out of their way to make chrono break?

I didn't quite understand this announcement from Squenix until I read this.

Basically, based on your assessment, it seems that they're waiting for the fan attention to FFVII to die down enough that they can minimize the "they changed it, now it sucks" reaction. That makes sense.

His Shadow Excuses, excuses it's almost like listening to Bioware now with their new team. Bottom line a new generation of Japanese game makers have failed to give the consumers what they want so they keep pushing games and media we do not want.
