Final Fantasy IV Sequel Announced

Final Fantasy IV
...but don't get too excited.

The continuation of Cecil's epic story probably isn't going to be within your reach. FFIV: The Big Whale Flies Again (okay, I completely made that title up; the real title is Final Fantasy IV the After - Return to the Moon) will appear in 2008 as a cellphone exclusive.

The story will follow the travails of Theodore, a young boy descended from Cecil's noble line.

Hey, at least we're getting FFIV DS, right?

Thanks to Crazyswordsman for the heads up!

My first reaction was a general blah to news of a sequel to any Final Fantasy game. Generally speaking, I don't think there's much room for two epic, world-shattering adventures in the same setting... and we've already seen the IQ-lowering power of FFX-2.

Then again, FFIV did leave some room for further development, and it sounds as though we're leaving the previous cast of characters behind. What do you think? Are we missing out on something?

Miss Ronin Minuse 3,000 points for being a mobile phone game.

Fail, Squeenix. Fail.

yelanates No. Just no. This is wrong.

Let's add up the things that are WRONG with this, shall we:

~The title is over 15 years old.
~The main characters will not be in it
~The original was really good
~It's on a cell phone

NOoooo

I totally agree. Even if there is room for a possible "sequel" of sorts, it should not be on the cellphones. This kind of a sequel should work on a system like the Ds or something to be able to bring out any possible potential...
Silver_ZombieComment 4: 2007-12-13 21:27
Silver_Zombie Lol. Will it at least be an RPG game? I have a feeling that they're going to ruin everything I love about FFIV. Would be fun to play some FF on my mobile phone during the boring lectures, though.

The Big Whale Flies Again is a great title, by the way.
Dark Paladin DannyComment 5: 2007-12-13 21:40
Dark Paladin Danny It's gonna be on a mobile phone? Buggery!
Most of em don't get released outside Japan when they are, combined with the fact mobile phones usually screw themselves over after a while so you'd lose the game thus wasting all yer money!

Del SComment 6: 2007-12-13 22:43
Del S Sheesh. Square Enix just keep circling around to jump over that damn shark.

I already regard it as an Ungame. It does not exist. It will not exist. It did not exist. Those who speak of it are speaking falsehood. Those who claim to play it are doing so to conceal other nefarious activites such as terrorism, communism, and denial of cake.

It has one source of salvation: If Theodore is accompanied by a friend named William, a mentor named Rufus, and then goes on to have a most excellent adventure or most bogus journey.
laszlowComment 7: 2007-12-13 23:01
laszlow Aw, crap. First Parasite Eve, and now this? We honestly have three things to blame for this:

1. Cell phones are more popular than video game consoles, and cell phone games are popular enough in Japan to merit this kind of project
2. Cell phone dev costs are low, and distribution costs are nonexistent
3. Consumers will eat it up like beer-flavored applesauce

So... **** Square Enix. I honestly hope this game is about as playable as an abortion. Just to stick it to them and also remove the temptation of trying it out myself.

beautifully said.

cell phone games are the worst idea in all of video game history

period. any other system, and this weak-sounding sequel might have been decent. FFIV was well loved, its been a while, and it did leave some open spots, especially with kain. however, in a world without any of the original characters, how is it even a sequel?

and that is if it wasn't for the cell phone. basically, squenix is wasting our time with another sure-to-fail money grabber.

I think fanfic writers could make a better sequel storyline than this, and they're not even getting paid to write one.

I have no problem with a sequel if it is done well. FF7 Dirge of Cerberus had the original cast, even if they got unequal attention. It was still a good play. But this FFIV-2 sounds beyond pathetic without the cast that made the original what it was, especially as a phone game. Don't phone games have limited memory? Most phone games are just meant to be time-passers while the player waits in line or sits awaiting their meal in a cafe.

Is Squenix facing bankruptcy? Why would they release such an obviously degenerate product if their survival weren't depending upon the $ they hope it brings them?

Party on, dude!.

Alright so SE has sold out for a cell-phone sequel eh? I honestly feel sorry for them, and the people who'll get a cell-phone plan just so they can get there "fanboy" on. This is without a doubt the saddest news I've heard all year.
MattComment 11: 2007-12-14 06:11
Matt 1. Cellphone exclusive in a flaccid cellphone game market
2. Announcing a 2008 release in mid-December 2007
3. Presumably your best teams still hard at work on XIII and IV DS

1 + 2 + 3 = FLOP
SilverMaduinComment 12: 2007-12-14 09:56
SilverMaduin Wasn't some part of the FFVII compilation on a cell phone? No matter.

Well, don't worry, we'll be able to emulate it soon enough tongue.gif

IF we should come to care. I'd check it out if it was free.

P.S. - YES, Del, YES, EXACTLY.

Lockes AlterEgo Whats up with this cellphone fettish of squars anyways, first KH Coded and now this! am i never going to get play a full seires of a game? i mean hell didnt they learn there lesson about experimenting with consel systems when they brought out FFXI? i mean despite it's popularity, they lost more than half there fan base because they game was so expensive and had so much you had to pay monthly. Plus i dont think i've even seen a new expansion for that one in over 2 years. Seriously though, a game like this would need to be on a medium that would be more pronounced. Something like the advanced, where the controls are more reconizable. Cellphone games have limited controls so it means that functionality of an other wise epic scale will be non existant. Why does square keep shooting themselves in the foot?

Two things you should probably know:

1) A new FFXI expansion came out like a month ago.
2) The United States is not the only market for games in the world. Just because it doesn't make sense to you because your cellphone sucks doesn't mean that the rest of the world agrees.

As for the meat of this story, I have no idea why they would need to try to extend the FF4 story, regardless of what system it's on. But, then, it's not something I need to care about, so hey - more power to them.

Hmm i guess i am more out the loop than i thought. Oh well regaurdless of that fact i still think the cellphone is a dumb medium for them to put it. The only real good cellphone i could see it on is possibly an Iphone.
