It depends on a ton of factors. Case in point - I beat FF X in less than a week after playing it for the first time, with 33 hours on the game clock.
But I just finished Xenogears. For the first time. And I've owned it since 2003. You see, a lot of the time I'll play the **** out of an RPG, then take a years-long break, then finish it over a winter or summer break. I finished Xenogears about two hours ago, and next on the list is Shadow Hearts: Covenant. -------------------- |

I generally like to make my games last a while because I don't like to finish them. I don't want the story to end, so I try to limit play time.
Some games, though, are so good that I just race through them in a week. Others, I play a while, stop, play them again, stop, etc. Like Xenosaga, I borrowed it from my cousin about a year ago and I don't even have Jr. yet. -------------------- Why, hello guys! Depends with me as well. When I got Kingdom Hearts I beat that in about a week with around 30 hours logged. I actually owned KH2 for about 2 months before I started it; took me about 3 weeks for that one since I was in school.

I've never played FFVI once without logging over 40 hrs., just cause I spend so much time exploring (I always forget secrets).

With most games I'll get really into them, then forget about them. XD Like the first time I played FFVI I think half way through I took about a half a year break from it.... I don't really mind though because I don't want my games to end. =] With FFXII it's taken me forever because theres so much to do other than the generic storyline.
I'm speeding through FFI atm though. -------------------- *Sigh*....Times are tough |

Yea on an average it takes me about a couple months because I get busy a lot with hw and sports but ff1 is very pragmatic in terms of completing the game. I'd estimate 2 1/2 to 3 weeks.

I always put in over 50 hours into each FF game, and that normally takes a half-year (at least) to do. If I get stuck, I might not touch a game for a week, or a month.

It always takes me at least a month because I tend to get lost a lot in video games.

It depends on if I'm playing anything else or not. FFIVDS went really fast because I didn't play anything else during that time, and I started FFX yesterday and I'm already 10 hours intro the game. When I'm playing other games at the same time though, it may take several months for me to beat one of them. Especially since I like grinding and doing all the side-quests.

A lot of my old PS1 classics I started when I was a kid and couldn't beat. Now I go back to them and I can beat them easy. FFVI being the exception. When I first played it I didn't like it. Then went back to it years later and played it for ages. Eventually got to the final boss and couldn't do it. Revisited it about a year ago and beat it after 4/5 tries. And now I've started again on it.
![]() FFVII took me a long time too because I didn't want it to be over. |

If I recall correctly, FFVI took me several months, but it wasn't like I was focused on it and it entirely. I started during the second half of my high school senior year, and finished it during my first freshman college semester (and shortly thereafter joined this site on my birthday).
I can't remember how long CT, FFV, FFIV, SMRPG, or Pokémon Blue took. I think I finished both Golden Sun games in one summer, but I played them quite a bit (along with Nethack). I think I also finished Sailor Moon RPG: Another Story in a summer. And I think I played most of Lufia 2 within the span of a month or two. But I've since put it down (I'm really close to finishing it, but I don't feel like finishing it). FFTA I just kept on playing clan battles and missions and not advancing the storyline, and I've played it on and off for several years now. (Currently, it's in off mode.) RPGs are definitely longer than platformer games, some of which I finish in a day or two--a week or two weeks if it's a more complex game. Probably my longest platformer experience was La-Mulana, which took me about a month (in between homework and a college social life) to finish. I did put it down for a week or two about 70% through the game, but still, that game is LONG. In contrast, I finished Home Alone (SNES) in less than two hours (with savestates, granted), and I often run through Gunstar Heroes in a couple hours or so for the fun of it. I played with friends when I was a kid. FFVI, Secret of Mana, FFIV. So even when I would get tired of playing I had other people to keep pushing me. And we always had strategy guides. Except for Mana. Since we only played together, our schedule determined how fast we could finish.
On games I played by myself, I generally never finished them. FFVII, I got half-way through disc 2 and got tired of the game. I was in Jr. High and played when I could but I wasn't hardcore enough to put in the time. I don't think I ever beat ChronoTrigger. I don't remember. I remember doing some side quests and stopping at some point. I know I never got close to finishing XenoGears. Now it's tough because I have kids and they want to play games with me and they don't understand when I don't want to play SpongeBob with them but I want to play a game by myself. Typically, (these days anyway, when I was younger it was different) an RPG will take me about a week to complete, or less. Every FF since VII this has been the case- except Tactics. This includes I, II, V and III, as I played them after VII on emulator.
Since my "fast period," (aka not being 10,) has begun, one of the only games that took me more than a week has been Seiken Densetsu III- Just because so much grind is required. In the case of Mystical Ninja 64, I beat it in one sitting, as I did not have a memory card, and really, I was younger, and as such had the liberty of time required to sit there for 12 hours and do it all front to back. KOTOR I and II I downed in 2 to 3 days each. Chrono Trigger and FF IV and VI took me a few months each to down, but I was less than 10 years old, (I got CT on my 10th birthday, actually,) so, being impatient and not reading properly, naturally it took longer. I specifically recall when playing CT through for the first time I absolutely could not find the Magic Cave, and as such, wandered about for a long time- possibly a month or two- before some kids I knew showed me what I was doing wrong- I was never hung up again. While I had Tactics for a few years, and had gotten rather far, I had never beaten it until last summer. Killed it in 3 days- a friend and myself hooked up a tv on my backporch and chainsmoked while we refused to sleep for 16 hour stretches. Beating it was awesome- I could finally sleep peacefully again. Granted, I'm not 100% most of these games, I can say my completion time is relatively fast with some degree of confidence- I like to think I'm getting an optimal ratio in relation to time spent and amount gotten out of the whole. -------------------- If you've been mod-o-fied, It's an illusion, and you're in-between. I guess I'm mostly like Laz. I can finish a game in a week, but I can also speed through the first half of a game and then hit a low spot and leave it on my dresser for five months. It really depends on my interest level and how busy I am at the time. Sometimes I'll just forget about the game altogether.

Most RPGs that I have played at first seemed pretty long & extensive, and that is still correct.
Yet however, the more often you play through one, the less of you unintentionally looking around the game for things you're not aware of, thus wasting time. Everyone has to start out slow and work on games so they can learn. Atleast that's what I did. Many of my favorite games now feel rather short and easy because I started to knowing about them from inside out. Sometimes I'll start some game I clearly understand well to have some fun through grinding/power-leveling habits. I'll also do this to a game that I really don't know so well, just for the sakes of playing it safe for the first time, afterwards focus on improving my knowledge of this game and challenge myself to beat it as short as ##:##, under levels of ##, et-cetera. So I basically dabble in both for the fun of variation. ~AngelWitch666~ -------------------- I've been locked away for all these years Now I can see the light of day Things have changed a lot since I was last out here I guess that's the way things, way things go |

On a first play through, it will usually take me a little less than a month to beat an FF or similar RPG. If it's a good game with a lot of replay value though, it will take me a little longer than that to get 100% completion or close to it. I remember the games in the Suikoden series taking me a little longer to complete for that reason.

Whenever I play a game that is plot-oriented, such as an RPG, (actually, predominantly RPGs.) I tend to rush through the game itself and only focus on plot-related quests. This way, I can take it in all at once, rather than sporadically between hours of level grinding, item hunting and mini-game playing. Playing that way, I can usually beat a game in 30 or so hours game time. In terms of real-time, I beat most games in two or three days when I play at this pace.
That being said, I play every game at least twice. Most games get varied playthroughs, the lowest being Final Fantasy 8 twice, the highest being Chrono Trigger which, at this point, is probably something like 30. My second time through, unless I have a specific goal in mind, such as meeting certain criteria to view an alternate ending, get a special item or character or what have you, I'll take my time, make sure to play every possible mini-game, do every single quest, collect every item, the works. At this pace, some games (like Final Fantasy Tactics) are constantly in play. This is where I start logging 70+ hours of gameplay time and stretch the games on for months, if necessary. Most non-rpg video games, I can beat in one or two sittings. Metal Gear Solid 4, for example, I beat in one sitting spanning a day and a half of nonstop gaming. That was a great weekend. A personal favorite of mine is Ocarina of Time, which I can now beat in under four hours and still have gotten every heart piece, song and item. It really depends on the game. In action-RPG games, such as KHI, KHII or Crisis Core, nobody can get me up from the couch. I just focus on the game, the strategy and bash along. I finished KHI in a week (my cousins were staying), I finished KHII in 3 days (my cousins were not staying, and KHII is way shorter than KHI) and I finished Crisis Core in 5 days, plus 3 days in New Game+ and another week finishing all the missions.
In classic RPGs, I play to the end. Seriously. Even if I hate it, I have to finish it to set up another record. My fastest is FF1, in 2 days Possible spoilers: highlight to view one day if I could've found the Rosetta Stone faster followed by Golden Sun 3 days. The better the RPG, the slower I finish (except FF1), cause I love feeling that I live inside the world, slowly digging into it. It's just who I am. -------------------- Good morning sir. That's what's so strange about RPGs. I seem to play them forever. Right now I'm playing FFXII, I suppose, although that amounts to just an hour or so a week at the moment. I've got absolutely no intention of finishing it, I just want to do some challenges in the first half of the game. Similarly with FFVII, I used to play it to death in 2007, but that was just fighting Emerald Weapon in many weird and wonderful ways, and trying to level up as much as I could in Midgar on disk 1.
Back in the day, when I was actually playing RPGs to complete them, I'd say it took me 30-40 hours to finish the story, but I would save the subquests and optional bosses for a second time round. I've tried several times to complete FFIX within 12 hours for Excalibur II but I gave up last year. Getting some new games might solve the problem. But I just like the old ones so much, and if they're still enjoyable, I'd rather play them than spend more money. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. That is a very broad question.
For FF (original), it now takes me like two or three hours for the remakes. If I do a challenge, though, that number gets shot to the ground. I think I finished XII for the first time around 45 hours in. When I go back and do it again getting everything everywhere and nuking everything to the ground, that number will at least triple. I can finish all the SNES-era GBA remakes in 10-15 hours usually. VII takes around 30, VIII around 35, I don't replay IX, X takes like 45. |

I misunderstood XD
It varies. If it's a longer game like X, XII, etc, I tend to start it and then a week or so later get bored and do something else. A snes game will be a weekend project. VII or VIII take me a week or two at the most. If it's a new game that I've never played before, I try to play two or three times a week for an hour or two so I don't forget things but I don't get burnout either. XII took me around a month the first time. |
