A lot of people don't like either pair and I was just wondering why.

I found that equipping Rafa with items that boost her MA turned her into a kind of 'luck' Charecter. She was capable of doing high amounts of damage, but you just had to be lucky, I like the fact that her Truth Skill ignores Faith.

.... I found Malak to be almost completely useless.

You pretty much answered your own question right there, the big reason being their skill sets...um...suck, at least compared to everyone else's skill sets. After all, nobody likes random targeting, right? Rafa's only real saving grace is her naturally low brave score, which makes her a good choice for move/finding stuff.

Thier skillsets and stats absolutely blow. You can soup them up to halfway respectable warriors/spellcasters for your group, but there are so many more better options... inclusing a homegrown generic that has been leveled properly.

They make a novel addition to your team, but not really a useful one.

Yeah I remember being very dissapointed. Especially because Malak looks so much like Delita.

It's fun to use Truth and Un-Truth though I certainly don't expect them to win battles for me. Besides it being matter of luck tp hit favorably (seeing four straight whiffs with one enemy on a two panel AOE is frustrating), high MA stats are needed for competitive damage output. I may put up numbers later if there's interest; damage increases exponentially as MA increases.

In addition, Un-Truth is crippled even further because,
Malak is a male using a MA-powered skillset. A built-in handicap that's a chore to overcome as the only way for him to boost his raw MA is levelling up as a Mime.
The reverse Faith modifier: Enemies have Faith between 45 and 74 for the most part and bosses have 60 or more. It's like a regular spellcaster facing opponenets with Faith between 26 and 55. Compared to using a regular faith based spell with similar base power over many castings, Un-Truth will do roughly 35% less damage a hit. Sure, Un-Truth can hit more than once in a single casting but that outcome is infrequent in practice, especially when the castings that fail to hit altogether are averaged in.
To do really good damage requires Faith status on both caster and target. This a quite a hassle. Too much trouble to bother with in many, if not all, situations.

I won't recommend either Rafa or Malak to someone simply looking to beat the game.

I normally keep them because they're story characters, but just give them generic skills. Sometimes they keep (Un)Truth as a secondary.

I never really found any of them useful whatsoever. I don't even think about recruiting them on my team because there are so many better people.

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Chrsit for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost

i always left them on my team. Though Malak quickly became a knight, and rafa a chemist. Rafa is also the only one i've ever used a substantial amount, and for the reasons that someone already stated: finding my items. I like rafa and malak the characters, but as units go - they are pretty average. And by that point in the game, you've got powerful unique characters, and all of your generics that you use are probably incredibly strong. Another factor that contributes to the ineffectiveness of rafa/malak.

(btw - what the hell was rafa doing with a sword on top of riovanes? she doesn't use swords)
