Floyd, you do know that you can review all the cutscenes in the Brave Story listing, right? It's a great way to help in understanding. Other sources work as well, but the in-game delivery kind of covers it as well.

You'll probably want to read the Germonik Scriptures. And by 'probably want to read the Germonik Scriptures' I mean read them on CoN's FFT section so you don't die of an exasperating heart attack waiting for Ramza to read page after page at the pace of a snail.
But don't worry, you can't be blamed for not understanding the story. And you certainly aren't alone. -------------------- |

Okay, the problem you probably have is that there are too many characters and you don't know who is doing what for whom. It's much simpler if you consider everybody being in one of six factions, The Hokuten Knights, the Nanten Knights, the Death Corps, the Glabados Church, the Lucavi, and Ramza's Wildcards which obviously consists of Ramza and those who join him.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Chapter 1: The only Chapter in which the Death Corps play a role. The four major players for the Death Corps are 1)Gustav who kidnaps the Marquis, 2)Golagros who kidnaps Teta, 3)Miluda and 4)Wiegraf who is Milda's brother and the leader of the Death Corps. Everybody else in this chapter is Hokuten. The Death Corps are disenfranchised soldiers from the Fifty-year War with Oldoria, a foreign country mentioned only in passing later on. The Death Corps are trying to get their pay from the war, and have started a revolution that fails when they all get killed except Wiegraf, thus ending the existence of the Death Corps. The main point of the chapter is to expose the differences in class strata. This is importnat because Ramza and Delita were blissfully ignorant of this and grew up believing each other to be equals, but when Ramza's brother Zalbag carelessly gives the order to shoot down Delita's sister Teta, they each react diferently. Delita decides to fight the system ather than being a mere peasant while Ramza feels guilty because his brother killed his friend's sister and he feels personally responsible as a noble. His guilty reaction is to give up his name and title and become an obscure peasant mercenary. Chapter 2: The Hokuten serve Prince Larg and currently claim to protect Princess Ovelia who is also under the holy protection of the Glabados Church. The Nanten serve Prince Goltana(the only significant player for the Nanten) and are plotting to capture the Princess and use her as a pawn in political schemes to rule the country. However, after Delita captures the Princess, it's revealed that the Hokuten would rather kill Princess Ovelia than let the Nanten put her on the throne, so neither side can be trusted with the Princess. Agrias the Holy Knight decides to take her to the Glabados Church, led by Cardinal Draclau which is supposedly neutral. Mustadio joins Rmaza and brings him to Goug Machine City where we learn about the Zodiac Stones and find out that the Glabados Church is not neutral between the Hokuten and the Nanten, but in fact playing both sides against the middle. This chapter closes with the revelation that Cardinal Draclau is one of the Lucavi, which is a special faction that is responsible for all the other conflicts to distract people from their true purpose. Chapter 3: This chapter just furthers the plot as presented in Chapter 2. Prince Larg claims himself as the Guardian of Prince Orinas and interim ruler of Ivalice while Goltana claims Ovelia is the true ruler. Alot is going on with the Hokuten and Nanten, but for this chapter all you need to know is that Delita is posing as a Nanten Knight so he can get close to Ovelia whom he plans to marry so he can become king. Ramza's story is drifting away from the Lion War as it is understood on the surface, so everyone he fights in this chapter is with the Lucavi whether they know it or not. Rafa and Malak are supposedly very powerful (though we know different on a practical level) and they are used as pawns. There's a showdown with the Lucavi involving Wiegraf who returns for a brief and futile battle, but all that really matters is the Germonik Scriptures which says St. Ajora(the Messiah) was really the the leader of the Lucavi and the Glabados Church is a sham. Chapter 4: Everything comes to a conclusion. Ramza fights the Lucavi all the way to the end, all his enemies are fighting for the Lucavi in one form or another except poor Melidoul who is just a lost soul that joins your cause, and Zalbag who missed that Dycedarg joined the dark side. In the periphery the Lion War falls apart when both Larg and Goltana die, leaving Delita as King who reunites the Kingdom of Ivalice. Ramza's story concludes in Hell where we learn that Ajor/Altima wanted a lot of bloodshed, and thats why hell broke loose on Ivalice. If you missed a character and don't know where they fall, they're either probably either Hokuten or Lucavi, depending on whether you fight them or not. Follow my template of actions and know that alot of what happens between chapters 2 and 4 ends up being moot anyway. -------------------- |

A plethora of characters, an intriguing storyline with numerous twists 'n' turns, and fun gameplay make this one my favorite game. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh?
