Has anyone heard if SE will begin making more movies based on their games, like they did for FFVII with Advent Children. I think a movie based on FFI or IV or hell any of them would kick ass.

I haven't heard, but I agree...though FF12 almost feels like a movie at times O.O

You know, though, FFVIII would make a great movie. Probably a better movie than a game. XD And FFIX would be a fun TV series. I'd watch it. :|

I'm a definite supporter of making movies from Final Fantasy games, but I haven't heard any word either. I would pay good money to see a movie for FFIX. Or perhaps FFVI, especially where it's 2D. It would be interesting to see how they'd do it in 3D.

Actually, what I would pay money to see is a movie version of the original games themselves--presented as films in order to reach a larger audience with the original material.

What I want to see is more people appreciating Square's work. What I don't like seeing is fanservice, and making a big deal of something. Making a big marketing deal of something really feels like cheapning the original work. However, creating a masterpiece derived from the original enhances the original's prestige.

Games today already have a near-lifelike cinematic quality to their storytelling. I don't think it's necessary to make movies based off of the games. tongue.gif

As for remakes of older games in movie form, that'd still be very difficult to do (similar to cramming a 700-page novel into a 2-hour movie, it won't work for a 30-40 hour RPG), and I'd rather they concentrate on making new games instead of spin-offs and the like.

Unfortunately, I agree with you on both counts.

I have a strong opinion that the newer Final Fantasy games often feel like "interactive movies"--and that movie versions of any game later than approximately FF7 would be kinda redundant.

And additionally, yes, it definitely IS hard to cram that much plot into a movie. Not that the Lord of the Rings trilogy had very high plot-per-unit-time content (AHEM), but using that as an example, even a trilogy might come up short in terms of plot, unless you're making it a quick plot summary, and possibly cutting out lots of atmospheric feel in places. Even if it were very loyal to both the feel and the plot of the game, you'd be hard pressed to sell the idea to Squenix--it'd be an enormous initial investment to do a movie series based on just one game, and given their luck with film in the past (i.e., the unfortunate lack of success of The Spirits Within), they'd likely not like the idea.

On the other hand, if they were to stuff the contents of the film into a shorter version, and cut out details here and there, numerous loyal fans would complain. Heck, I'll admit that I would--I complained when many important details were left out in the recent Pride and Prejudice movie, and the ending was changed significantly. But regardless of P&P, a bunch of loyal fans complaining doesn't help their company image in terms of fans and may also affect the financial performance of the movie--unless it's so overwhelmingly strong that "mainstream" people like it so much that their ticket and DVD purchases overwhelm the lack of enthusiasm from "original" fans.

I do have one initial idea to help them with movie marketing efforts, though: [i]Don't name your series "Final Fantasy" first. Give it a name, and subtitle it "the [n]th Final Fantasy". It'll get more people's attention, and people who don't like gaming will feel less dorky when talking to their friends about something whose title doesn't sound like the name of a videogame series. I mean, would you prefer "Super Mario Bros.: Return of the King" or "Return of the King: a Super Mario Bros Movie"?

I haven't heard anything, but I think it would be sweet if they made an FF3 movie. happy.gif
