An Esper.
 The Kremlin-like architecture on Alexander's top suggests he's/it's some sorta automated/robotic Russian castle... or somethin'. The theory that Alexander's name comes from Czar Alexander (instead of Alexander the Great) of the Holy Alliance would definitely back that up. The fact that he's/it's physically a castle in FFIX as well further reinforces my opinion. When i first saw him in FFVIII, I thought he was an armored-castle-robot, and have thought that since, all in all, he really just is an esper.

My opinion (since I was thinking of this about a week ago) is that he is some armored god because he doesn't have any two eyes that are prominent, and he's way too big to be a human.

I think he's a robot. Some strange, deranged robot that some gaming intern designed while running off of caffine and no sleep for a week or so. If he was a robot, he could look like a building and not have any noticable human-like traits yet still be able to shoot off his rays of Doom due to technological advancements in some foreign place we have yet to learn about...

if i remeber correctly espers are humans that where trapped between them batteling gods who turnt to stone,right? maybe alexander was in his human form an brilliant ingenear who was in some kind of high-tech armor when he was struck by the divine magic of the gods and thus turned into this gigantic thingie who can send an beam of holy destruction into his enemies and was, because it was so powerfull, locked away into the memories of an family of honorbel knights to be unlocked when he's needed most... few that's gotta be the longest text i have ever written so please don't mind the spelling please

When you're exploring the caves on the island Thamasa is on, Possible spoilers: highlight to view ... you come across the three miniature statues of the Goddesses. Alexander is obviously a machine built for either massive destruction or to protect from intruders. In FF9 it was the most developed. I wouldn't say "Robot" or any of the above, so I'll go with "Other" since it is a summoned being.
