Resident Evil. Better plot by far, IMO. Silent Hill got too wonky and wierd the further you progressed, and in doing so it lost it's horror factor for me, and just became another ho-hum game.

Both are considered survival horror, but really RE is about the survival and SH is about the horror. On a purely gameplay level, RE was always a bit smoother, but when it comes down to story and scares, SH always had it beat by miles.
RE as a story and such is pretty stupid, but obviously that's not the point. It's fun, but I never walked away feeling light headed with an adrenaline rush. When I want something fun and action packed, I'll go with RE, but when I want it serious and powerful, I go SH everytime. -------------------- |

Definitely Silent Hill over RE.
I've played the four SH games, and albeit the third opus, they were all excellent games, far creepier than the RE serie. I tend to agree with Narratorway about the survival/horror rift between the two series, and since I'm not much for zombie action games, I never found the RE games appealing. The very first Silent Hill on the other hand had me glued to my chair when playing it, even in broad daylight. Sounds, textures, and fog, combined with a great music made a disturbing and very powerful game. The sequels never succeded in attaining the level of horror the first one distilled, imo, but they all have certain qualities. SH2 as a powerful plot, and the various endings all make a lot of sense depending on how you played the game. As far as catharsis go, it was also a short course of psychology comprised in a frightening game. SH3 is the only direct sequel of the lot, and it suffers from that: little plot, almost bland characters, not that much different endings, which in fact are not that very different from each others. The weak point of the serie, although it can frightens you if you're not careful when playing... SH4 is an incredibly intersting game, with a deep story and multiple movies references. A little too much action oriented, but with some very nice new ideas. And with a powerful character as a villain. So to sum it up, yeah, SH over RE ![]() |

I vote for Silent Hill, no question...even with the fourth came included for consideration.
Resident Evil just isn't scary. Okay, so things come and try to kill you. Big deal! That happens in Super Mario Bros.! Even making them gross things doesn't significantly up the ante. Resident Evil is about running around, killing everything in your path, and being annoyed that you can't save whenever you want. Silent Hill, on the other hand, is all about atmosphere. From the eerie noise the radio makes when you're near a monster that you may not be able to risk encountering to the creepy surprises (THAT room in the SH3 hospital--if you've played the game, you know which one I mean!), the Silent Hill games are working their psychological mojo even as the mutated dog monsters growl on approach. Also, I really like the Silent Hill stories. The first game still provokes arguments as to what exactly was going on, and I've never seen a game with the depth and complexity of SH2. SH4 is a huge lowpoint for the series (in just about every respect), but, as I understand it, RE had its low point, too. If you wanted a real contest, you should have added Fatal Frame into the mix. ![]() -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

I could never get into Silent hill. I really don't like the highly disturbing thing anyway. Things that make you jump, or go, "Aaargh, nooo, it's gonna kill me, run away!" are cool, but not things that make my skin crawl.
So obviously I prefer Resident Evil. Although I'm not so sure about the amount of enemies; sometimes I think there are just too many in the latest game. Good fun anyway though. The only Resi' game that was ever remotely scary story wise, was the first one. Also, I was pretty young at the time. But I'm sure they did a better job at scaryness generally all round. Resi' has become more and more about killing countless enemies it seems, which seems a bit of a shame. Plus the puzzles are so easy now, it's ridiculous. The game has definetly changed siginifcantly over the years. Less use of brain, more bang bang with guns. Though this accusation could be used on games in general and how they have changed over the years from how I see it. A large part of the reason I play games a lot less these days. -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

Quote (One_Winged_Angel @ 23rd June 2006 11:06) I can't wait for the SH movie either. Does anyone know of a release date for it? It's been released for a couple of months now, at least in France. It's actually not in theaters now, due to the flood of summer movies. Don't know about a US release though. I didn't like it, despite my love for the SH serie. Christophe Gantz did what he always does with his movies, creating a nice photogaphy and leaving much to be desired in terms of characters backbone and movie structure. Also, despite being extremely well made for the games, the music didn't fit that right inside the movie: some original pieces would have been nice, but all they did was scrap up most themes of the first three games, which was not always appropriate. It did answer some questions about the reality shifts and parallel worlds usually found in the games, and the special effects were ok, but the movie lacks a definitive choice in terms of fright: it goes from creepy atmosphere to horror to terror to gore without fixating on one, which in the end didn't make the movie that scary. One very high point though: these lines are quoted directly from the movie, and it's too much to not be a reference. Man: "She's a witch!" Crowd: "Burn her! Burn her!!" I wasn't the only one to laugh in the theater, we were a couple selected few. Long live the Monthy Pythons. This post has been edited by Mr Thou on 23rd June 2006 10:40 |

It was out around the end of April in the U.S. I didn't really mind it. There was plenty of fanservice--music, images, characters, and even entire scenes taken from the first three games. The general feel of the town and the mood of the story were both there in abundance. The movie looked pretty good, too. On the other hand, while the story (invented for the movie but still in the general vein of the games) was okay, the story-telling wasn't. Note to self if self ever produces a movie: if the only way to explain what's going on is to have one of the characters almost break the fourth wall through its elaborate explanation, pick a new story. It wasn't nearly as scary as the games are, but I think that's because the games have a little more immersion than a movie does, just by the nature of the medium. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Now, I'm not the biggest horror fan... Actualy I'm a big weenie. But even I know a little about RE and Silent Hill. Personaly plot wise I've always found RE facinating. The idea that the T-virus started out as a cosmetics-like cure for aging blows my mind. My only complaint surrounding Resident Evil is that Ada finds it necisary to traipse around in some backwater Italian zombie town in a cocktail dress and heels in RE4. Silly game designers, silly.

Silent Hill. Though the movie was horrendous, the game (first one at least) was spectacular. There were several parts that left my mouth bone-dry.. and several parts that made me quite thankful I hadn't had a lot of water that day, if you get my drift. Not to mention the music... Not Tomorrow is awesome. Simply awesome. Especially the 'Nay Tomorrow' remix of it. =^-^=

Resident Evil, by far.
Frankly, I find neither series spooky. Then again, I'm kinda a party-pooper when it comes to horror of any sort: As long as it isn't that scene with the little boy and the scary-as-Hell clown doll from the first Poltergeist movie, which at the same time pretty much cancels out any video games, then it ain't gettin' much outta me. Silent Hill, in that respect, just gets bogged down by its stricter "horror" focus over the action. And admittedly, outta the ones I've played (the first two), I could never get as far into the plot nor experience the same amount of enjoyment as with RE. Along with Clock Tower (SNES), RE1 and RE4 are my favorite survival horror games. The continuous storyline, though sometimes lame and full of holes, is deep enough to keep me playing, and although I'm not really a fan of any one of the playable characters in particular, I do so much enjoy busting caps in undead/mutated/Tyrant-ed/parasite-infested booty. And all that entails. Of course, RE0's overall lack of storage crates is plain unholy at best... -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. I vote Silent Hill. The more you got into RE the more guns and ammo they gave you, I didn't feel like I was in great danger. In SH they give you little ammo, and instead of controlling some super soldier you have some ordinary joe like you or I.

From what I've read, Silent Hill seems to have a more complex story than Resident Evil, so I'd probably enjoy something like that. (Keep in mind I haven't played anymore than the first five minutes of the first SH, and none of the RE games. So meh.)

While I can argue that neither game actually scares me...
I would have to go with SH on this one due to the reasons Mu mentioned, as well as the fact that the game has...what is the right word...ambiance. It keeps you riveted throughout. I have only played the first one, but my god! It made me want the story to keep going. As far as being an ordinary joe...well, I guess I would be somewhere between super soldier and ordinary joe ![]() Edit Grammar and spelling This post has been edited by Nytecrawla on 29th June 2006 14:07 -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Resident Evil is much better from what I've played. I'm not too much into survival horror, particularly the horror, which is why I'm not a big fan of Silent hill. I've only played 1 in that series, while I've played 1 (Partly), 2, and 4 in the Resident Evil series.
As for which was scarrier, I honestly think that Resident evil was a bit scarrier just because it had that moment in RE4 where the iron maidens and whatnot are in the same room as you and you can hear them WHEEZING and you turn around to have one right behind you. But in terms of scaring me shitless moments, nothing will EVER come close the the one scene in eternal darkness (if you've played it you know what I'm talking about), which I just experienced earlier today. I literally yelped. Like a little girl. -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. I rally for Silent Hill. My best friend and I have played it ever since we were little which was when the first one came out. The storylines are just amazing and the fear it invokes is so unique. I can tell you right now Toluca Prison is still a place in my nightmares...
But we've also played all the Resident Evil games as well. I won't deny in saying I love them too, but Silent Hill storyline is so much better IMO. -------------------- "Shut up. You're making me sober..." -Reno *Ryoko* |
