I was reading the monster stats on some website looking to see if any monster had a special attack stronger than catscratch. According to this link: http://www.teriisenshi.web1000.com/ff6/monsters/pugs.htm the 'pugs' monster has a special called knife with damage multiplier of 14, whereas catscratch has a multiplier of 6.

I figured that I just had to see that for myself but after successfully getting an encouter with the pugs on the veldt I was greatly disappointed to not find pugs at all in my list of rages!

According to my ff3 strategy guide it lists "Nothing." as what is available to gau when performing the pugs' rage. That might be some weird way of saying you can't get a pug rage even though its on the stinkin veldt.

Basically my question is: is it possible to get the pugs rage? If so, how poweful is the knife attack?

Pugs does not have a RAGE.

There are RAGE slots programmed for All Over, Seigfried and Chupon, but you cannot get them due to a bug. ProtoArmor and Pugs appear on the Veldt but do not have slots in Gau's RAGE list. MZed may be able to tell you specifics about why the bug does what it does.

I hope you took the opportunity to steal the Minerva from him. He is extremely rare. In fact, I have had an active game going ever since the game came out and have never encountered it.

Is this the "Pugs" or the "Pug" that we're talking about? I remember reading that "Pugs" isn't ragable (even though I personally have yet to run into it); is "Pug" ragable, and what kind of attacks do you get from that rage?

Edit: And why the heck are the names and the stats different between Pug and Pugs? And why "Pugs" rather than something like "Pug Buddy" or something like that? Makes me really confused all the time about which one it is.

Yes. There are 4 sources for acquiring Minerva: Steal from Pugs, Steal from Goddess, Bet Czarina Gown in Colosseum and Find one in Kefka's Tower.

'Pug' does appears on the Veldt. It has Break as a Rage. Nothing special.
I was talking only about 'Pugs' in my earlier post.

Siegfried's RAGE is Flare. PowerDemon also has Flare as his RAGE.
Chupon's RAGE is W Wind. No other RAGE has W Wind, that would have been nice.
All Over's RAGE is Quake. Uroburos, Cluck and ChickenLip also have Quake as RAGE.
Pugs' RAGE is Knife, which as you mentioned is a powerful physical attack. That would have been very nice.
I have no information on what ProtoArmor's RAGE would have been. Most enemies have one of their CONTROL attacks as their RAGE. Going with that logic, ProtoArmor's RAGE probably would have been Program 35 or Tek Laser. Nothing special.

Really only Knife would have been valuable out of those 5 missing RAGES. But Catscratch is still pretty darn good. Especially if you actively give Gau +2 Vigor at levelups. Vigor over 128 is pointless, so dont bother. Or 86 Vigor + Hyperwrist. I usually boost Gau to 86 Vigor and level him up with +2 Magic Power bonuses after that. Around level 40 (ie after 28 +2 VIGOR stat increases), you should be doing consistent 9999 with Catscratch.

I'm not an expert on this subject, but I read in a document that there were a fair amount of other attacks that had a damage multiplier over 6, not just "Knife".

There are a lot of special attacks stronger than catscratch, but none that you can get with rages. It would have been cool to get the "throat jab" ability from that big giant guy who hides inside a chest on the floating continent (goras, gigantos? something like that). There are only 3 or 4 attacks with a damage multiplier bigger than 1 that you can get with rage. Trooper (or one of those guys) and Fidor have a level 2 attack, and gold bear has a level 3. I think that's it besides catscratch.

I think the monster skill cyclonic has the same effect as W. Wind, and maybe not even hurting your own party.

Btw, if you want to run into 'pugs' on the veldt withtout cheating too much, check out the veldt guide on the website linked in my other post. Go to algorithms >> Veldt. Pugs are in group 30, so simply save&reload to bump your group number by 13 repeatedly until you get close to group 30.

The Minerva is also dropped by the Pug....whichever one from Umaro's cave. Essentially, I got 2 as a result of the fight. Meaning my third one from Kefka's Tower is somewhat obsolete.

IIRC, three Pugses fight you simultaneously. You sure you didn't steal from more than one?

Basically my question is: is it possible to get the pugs rage?  If so, how poweful is the knife attack?

This information was written by Djibriel and can be found in his Rage FAG over at gamefaqs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/file/554041/35118):

"Ah, Pugs. Monster # 255, thus the 256th monster (00 counts as one, you work it out). While this monster in fact has a Rage, the menu needs an 'Empty' slot for the game to work properly and this 256th slot remains empty. You can meet the Pugs monster formation on the Veldt, and you actually *do* get their Rage once you have Leapt them, but as it is unselectable under any circumstance (including Muddle/Charm or Berserk) these guys have no reason to be on the Veldt but to provide you with a potentially unlimited amount of Minerva armors, even though you'll never need more than two. "

Again, all credit for this goes to Djibiriel, who knows everything there is to know about this game.

IDK, I think that Gau's rages are useless. There are too many of them, and they're hard to cipher through. Makes it hard to use him, though I'd like to.

I need to print off that rage list, that might a lil' bit.

Edit
Welcome to CoN, Kayeto!!!! Let me be the first (or at least the next) to say greetings flag-blue.gif
