It's proportionate, I guess. Sometimes they're a little lower or equal.

I'm sure Master ZED would know the specifics, but in my experience, new members seem to join at a rough average of your current party. Which is why it's helpful to take Celes onto the floating continent: though it's tougher on the way out because you only have three in the party, if she has a higher level, you'll get a slight head start in the WoR.

I always thought they came onto your party on Celes' level. Well, I guess I'm wrong.

Yeah, I didn't find out the specifics on how this works but this describes it very well. Just shoot to the end of the file and go up to the last section before the credits (5.4).

You mean they change?
I thought they stayed the same. Or do they? Or do they not? Your levels are never averaged down, only up. So I can only assume that Mog had a higher level at the end of the WoB than the characters you'd already got back in the WoR. If he'd been lower, his level would be raised.

bah, but I can be sure that Gau's level doesn't depend on your character's level when you get him in WoR

Bismark, what part of that looks like it would not apply to Gau, exactly? -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Actually, I agree with Bis. I usually level up before I get everyone back in the WoR, but whenever I get Gau, he always starts at about what he was before the floating continent. I remember in my last game I got everyone to about level 50-60, and he came in at about level 25.

That's because when you get Gau, it's on the Veldt, where experience cannot be earned. Whether this is a bug, or actually planned, I couldn't tell ya.

Then gau should be one of the first characters to get back
its not that hard to get gau back Â

I never paid very close attention to each of my characters' levels, so I just thought they came in with what they had. I know better now.

Wait a minute...
Does this mean that a very easy way to level up alll your characters at once would be to grab Gau and a couple other characters and bring them up to level 60 or so, then go get all your others? -------------------- Visit my useless site! http://areldyb.tripod.com |

Yeah. It worked for my Terra, and I tried to do this with Gau, but I forgot a small detail; I already grabbed him and ditched him early on in the WOR, so that idea crashed and burned...

well shoot if you really want to level up everyone quickly do the lete river trick. I assume those levels will carry on to every other character you get until the end of the game. Â But like I said earlier, fastest way to take all the fun out of a game. Â Besides, your stats will suck if you've leveled that much before you have bismark and zoneseek and al those good leveling buddies.

Yeah, same thing if you use a code hacking method to up your levels.... if you have Terra at level 99 at the beginning, most other characters you get have about level 98 or so.

I looked it up and "this" is how the level system works:
1. Whatever Terra's level is, when Locke joins he has +2 more than Terra. 2. Whatever Locke's level is, when Mog joins he has +5 more than Locke. 3. Whatever Locke's level is, when Edgar joins he has +2 more than Locke. 4. Whatever Edgar's level is, when Sabin joins he has +2 more than Edgar. 5. Whatever Sabin's level is, when Shadow joins he has +0 more than Sabin. 6. Whatever Shadow's level is, when Cyan joins he has +2 more than Shadow. (Maybe I should use the word "whatever" less often. WHATEVER! 7. Whatever Locke's level is, when Celes joins she has +0 more than Locke. 8. Whatever Celes's level is, when Setzer joins he has +0 more than Celes. 9. Whatever Locke's level is, when Strago joins he has +0 more than Locke. 10. Whatever Strago's level is, when Relm joins she has +0 more than Strago. 11. Whatever Mog's level is, when Umaro joins he has +2 more than Mog. 12. Whatever Terra's level is (I think), when Gogo joins he/she/it has +2 more than Terra. This may not be true all the time. Near when you are getting your last few characters, it seems to sometimes not follow this rule. Sometimes all of your characters levels are averaged (ex. Say you have 7 characters levels: 28, 24, 15, 22, 21, 25, and 18. Add those together to get 153. Divide by the number of people you added together, 7 in this case, to get 21.85. This means that the next character you get has a 85% chance of being at level 22 and a 15% chance being at level 21). This is not true all the time, but it's one way or the other. This is just what I found out. If someone can find this statement false, please do so if you want to, but I got this info. from myself and confirmed in other FAQ's. Great work, FF Master. I never worked it out, but it does seem as if new characters join at or slightly above your party's average level. Your hypothesis could easily be tested by using a save state editor.
As efficient as it may be to power level early in the game (to have the effect carry over to future members), there is a good reason not to: Espers. In order to end up with the most powerful party possible, I try to scrape by until I have all of the World of Balance Espers. Then I level up with Espers equipped to raise Magic Power.
