Prevent Cid's Death? (possible spoilers)

I'm playing Final Fantasy 3 US (6) on my SuperNintendo (real thing, not emulated, no save states
 .) How do I prevent Cid from dying (not that it really matters)? I read something about faster and slower moving fish but I couldn't tell the difference. I want to be sure about this because it seems to take about 45 minutes to get from the last possible save point to where this takes place. Thanks. -------------------- Status: FF6 -- Finished! Yeah! Feed him only fast fish - it's easy to tell the difference. If there are no fast fish, then just go back to the house and talk to him. This will trigger a new set of fish in the sea.

Unfortunately, he doesn't even do anything even if you do save him. You'll still get Palidor. I just let him die because the story is better with the Celes attempted suicide scene.
