I guess you're all familiar with the Character themes.

I've never heard Celes' in the game, except in the ending theme.

It sounds different when you download it.

But R thumbup.gif elm's rule!

I like them all, but I have another question.

Have you heard Celes' theme in the game except in the end and on the opera?

Well, there are two versions of Terra's/Tina's theme: "Awakening" and "Terra" (the latter is the WoB overworld theme). There are also two versions of Celes's theme: "Celes" and what's played at a very famous moment.

Arguably, there are also two versions of Locke's and Setzer's themes, each, but I wont' spoil them for you as to what they are.

My favorite themes are those of Terra theme (both versions), Shadow, Cyan, Setzer, Strago, Gogo, Kefka, and Rachel.

Quote (Tatsubei Yagyu)
2. Shadow's theme is ninja.

Actually, while he looks like a ninja, I have the impression that his theme hints more of "Western", and I remember that I've read of other similar opinions.

Heh-heh... I thought that about Shadow's theme, too. High-ho, Interceptor, AWAY!! ...well, not quite. But anyway.

FF6 has got to have my favorite lineup of character themes in the entire series.

1. Celes
2. Terra
3. Relm
4. Locke
5. Gau

And if Rachel counts, her theme is definitely one I love, too. wink.gif

I feel really silly for asking, but I can't remember where you hear Gau's theme in the game, though. I heard it off of the soundtrack, of course, but I can't for the life of me remember where it's played in the game.

When Gau awakens Sabin, Cyan, and/or Shadow when they wash up on the Veldt.

When you go through the 'introducing Gau to his dad' side-event.

That I can think of. It might play somewhere else, I dunno.

That's one of my favorites too, if I didn't already list it.

Shadow's theme reminds me of the 'lone ranger' type of character, he's stopping by for a drink in this town's tavern, everyone knows him, but no one associates with him, etc. Intentional? It's still a cool theme.

What you say here does indeed fit his personality.

Although I'd think people'd know the Lone Ranger better than they'd know Shadow. Unlike a lone ranger character, Shadow's personality and appearance are well-cloaked.

I like this ones: ( no special order)
Cyan: . It suits him, after all the beginning of this theme sounds like he can't let go a past full of sorrow and tribulation. Then it sound like a courageous person who overcome it. eh.gif
Celes: . It sounds like melancholy and confusion, like if there is only one solution to all the suffering..It makes me remember her
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
suicide attempt

Gau : . I feel sadness when I hear this one, and I don't know why. And of course, "Awakening" from Terra. It sounds like confusion, and hope from learning about emotions. And if she feel forced in some way, like she has a great responsability in her hands...I don't know. But I must admit that they really did a great job on the music score.

This is how I rank the character themes and the mood/theme I associate with each theme:

1. Cyan (tragedy and honor)
2. Strago (mischief and magic)
3. Gau (sadness)
4. Terra (loneliness)
5. Shadow (mystery)
6. Locke (adventure)
7. Gogo (mischief)
8. Edgar and Sabin (strength and nobility)
9. Celes (regret)
10. Relm (innocence)
11. Umaro (raw power)
12. Mog (playfulness)
13. Setzer (adventure)

In response to some of the confusion about which songs are the characters' themes:

CELES'S THEME

Celes's theme is based on "Aria di Mezzo Carattere" (the opera solo). The true version of Celes's theme (called "Celes" on the OST) plays in Albrook when:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
The party stays overnight in the inn before journeying to Thamasa. Locke apologizes to Celes for not trusting her in the Magitek Research Facility. It also plays if you fail to save Cid's life in the World of Ruin. (Celes attempts to commit suicide by taking a leap of faith off the cliff.)

TERRA'S THEME

This song is called "Terra" on the OST, and it plays during the World of Balance overworld. Another version of her song plays during the opening credits (where you see the Magitek Soldiers walking toward Narshe in Mode 7 graphics).

Some people consider "Awakening" to be another theme song for Terra. While it would be unusual to have two totally different theme songs, the "Awakening" song only plays during events about Terra. For example:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
When the Slave Crown is removed, and Terra discovers that she has amnesia.

LOCKE'S THEME

Locke's theme is called "Locke" in the OST. It's the theme that plays when:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
You first meet Locke, and he (with the Moogles' help) saves Terra from the guards. It also plays when Locke comes to terms with Rachel's loss, after the Phoenix Cave event.

There is another song that is based on "Locke." It's called "Forever Rachel," and it plays in:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Kohlingen, when Locke tells the party how he lost Rachel. It also plays when Locke attempts to revive Rachel with the Phoenix Magicite. This song is sometimes considered to be Rachel's theme.

GAU'S THEME

This music can only be heard during two brief events (not counting the ending, which is a medley of every character's theme). Gau's theme plays when:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Sabin and Cyan wash up unconscious on the shore of the Veldt after jumping down the Baren Falls. It also plays in the World of Ruin during the optional scene where the party introduces Gau to his father (the crazy man).

SETZER'S THEME

Setzer's theme is called "Setzer" in the OST. It's the music that plays when you first learn about Setzer. It also plays when you're inside the Blackjack.

There is another theme called "Epitaph" that is based on "Setzer." It plays in:

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Daryl's Tomb, Setzer tells the party about Daryl, his lover who died in an airship crash. This song is sometimes considered to be Daryl's theme.

I think your matching concepts/emotions/ideas to each theme is a very nice idea. I'd disagree about a few though:

Gau's theme seems to suggest a very peaceful, childish nature, more than sadness.

Terra's theme suggests something like "who am I?" or loneliness (for "Awakening") and a quest (for "Terra").

Celes's theme suggests a romantic shyness.

Shadow's theme suggests "lone ranger"-ism. Some mystery, but that's not so much the emphasis as the fact that he has very little attachment to anything other than his dog, if at al.

Relm's theme represents a very pure type of beauty.

And Gogo's theme is more mystery than anything else--"what is Gogo?".

---

As for "Awakening", not only is it used much in scenes involving Terra, but it also contains the same melody as "Terra".

Locke's and Celes' Themes are definitely my favorites. Locke's gives a sense that his courage has risen until it can't rise anymore, and now he's going to go kick some ass. Celes' gives a sense of longing. Though it may not seem like it at times, she does have very strong feelings for Locke. Another theme I haven't seen mentioned that I really like is Kefka's Theme. It gives that sense of mania and psychoticness (if that's a word). Plus, it goes perfectly with his laugh. laugh.gif

Sure he's not one of the playable characters, but I just LOVE his theme. If anything it matches his personality the best. Plus, when you first hear it during his intro on the way to Figaro you think he's going to more like the slapstick comedian of the game...

Not the diabolical bad guy who kills a General and Emperor, destroys the world, and becomes the 'God' of Magic. Okay, so he's pretty hilarious during it all.

As for the main characters' themes, I have to go with Terra/Tina being my personal favorite. Maybe it's just that you hear it on the World Map most of the game and it gets stuck in your head. But it's got a catchy tune!

When I listen to "Awakening," no more than half of it sounds like the melody from "Terra" (that plays during the WoB overworld). Even the "Terra" portion does not contain the entire overworld melody.

The first 25 seconds sound like a brand new melody. Then you hear the most famous refrain from "Terra" for about 20 seconds. Then another new melody plays for about 12 seconds, followed by the same refrain from "Terra." The track loops after that.

As far as character themes go, I'd say that "Tina"/"Terra" was my favorite. Also have to say I like the use of leitmotifs, and "Tina" being in "Awakening" and being the third part of the opening really heightened my liking of it.
