So, in a little under two weeks, I'm moving from Pittsburgh to St. Louis.
Does anyone have advice for packing jewelry? You know, necklaces and such that get tangled if you look at them the wrong way... If I leave them on the necklace holder (uh, another word for that, anyone? mine is shaped like a dressmaker's dummy in a feather boa and has prongs at the top), I'm afraid they'll get tangled. If I take them off, I know they'll get tangled. Also, what kinds of groceries should we keep, and what should we just give away to friends? Is there anything in particular that seems like it would be a good idea to move with but isn't really? Please don't tell me not to take, like, milk. Or ice cream. I have some common sense. Not much, but enough to know that. I'm still trying to decide what colors to paint, too. Right now, I know that the kitchen is going to be bottle green. The living room is going to be some shade of, um, teal, or blue, or...purple. You can tell I've really made up my mind right there. As for the bathroom, we're either going to leave it alone or paint it a pale blue to match our stuff. We'll either leave the library alone or paint it some really random color (like bright purple! Yeah!), but the bedroom is another dilemma. One of our bed spreads is beige with olive-green palm trees and such on it. The other is silvery blue with gold and white accents. We could paint the room gold, I guess, but yellow gets old fast...or leave it white. Or just paint it a random color (LIKE BRIGHT PURPLE! lilac! I love lilac!) and pretend it matches. Maybe they shouldn't let people like me paint. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Personally, I'm decorating my appartment with a black-and-ivory theme. Couches, low tables, low shelves and an unintrusive neon "BAR" sign on the wall... I'm going for a bit of a lounge feel to match with my primary non-computer hobby.
![]() You should aim for a theme - the rest should come naturally. But really, whatever is comfortable to you matters. It's your house, not some elegant painting going on sale for a few mil. It should feel cozy and you should be comfortable in every part of it, above all things. A plain color scheme with matching furniture works just as well (and probably better)as a wild scheme does. Bring your jewelry with you. Valuable stuff like that shouldn't be left in the care of the movers - who knows just how honest they are? It's best not to risk valuables - you won't ever see these guys again so if something happens, it's gone. Plus you won't risk getting it all tangled up in boxes. As for food, non-perishable stuff is fine. The rest, eh, have a few friends over to celebrate your moving out and be generous with food and beverages. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

But I can't put it all on at once, can I? Well, maybe I could, but I'm not going to. Part of it has to be packed, even if it's being packed in my stuff. I need a way to do it that won't make it a tangled mess. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

I'm not saying to put it on, of course. Unless you want to look like one of those old English ladies with the frilly hats and those spectacles mounted on a short pole that run around saying insightful and profound things like "Good lord!" and "How shocking!" while fondling their jewelry in omnious manners.
![]() Just carefully place it in a small box you can keep with you without incuring too much shaking or bumping. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

If you're just gonna throw 'em in something like that, you might as well just put 'em in a Ziplock sandwich/snack bag or the like. Seems handier and more compact to me, anyway. -------------------- |

Well for the necklaces you could put them in their own individual bag (small platic and tight, so that they'll have little movement and seperate for eachother). This is the only method I know, My grandfather's hobby is rockhounding, then he goes home, and has a diamond cutter in his attic as well as other jewelry making equipment, everything he makes is kept in its own little ziplock baggy, for the sole peurpose that they won't entangle another.
It's interesting he oftens makes the finest stones into anniversary presents for my grandmother. They tangle all by themselves. No shaking or bumping required. Someone on Open Diary gave me a suggestion that makes sense, though, so I think I'm good. She suggested that I wrap each one in tissue and then pack it. That way, they're separated, and wrapping them individually is still practical (but a thousand ziploc bags wouldn't be). Thanks, though. ![]() -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Quote It's all good, my grandfather also uses that method for ones he felt weren't good enough for gifts, or too good (except he likes to display those) he has like a box full of jewelry wrapped in tissue paper. But generally little ziplock baggies. She suggested that I wrap each one in tissue and then pack it. strange hobby, but whatever floats your boat. Edit Quote women are women, some really like necklaces most are obsessed with shoes, when my brother left for college my mom took over his closet and turned it into a shoe closet. This is one large closet, and she pretty much filled it. I don't know how anyone would ever need or use all the shoes, but apparently after asking around "shoes make or break your outfit" So like I said women are women You'll never know what accessories they need.Out of curiousity, uh... just how many necklaces do you have? I once heard that it's good to tape a pillow to your TV screen when you move it, so it doesn't risk getting broken somehow.
I was going to suggest tissues ![]() Oh well. A friend of mine had really vibrant colors for their rooms: Neon blue room, pale blue-grey room, turquoise hall, yellow kitchen, dark, deep blue room with carpet you'd see at a skating rink or arcade (it actually matches a local rink XD)... The Mexican painting the house loved it. They said they were going to redo their house like so. For the living room, if you want to accent the size of it, I'd do a darker, rich-color walling with a bright, light-colored trim at the top to make everyone's eyes go up to the trim and at the ceiling. That also helps if you have ugly furniture and want to take the focus off of that... I like the idea of a silvery-blue room, to go with the bedspread. But that might be too much of that color, and hard to match with. Dark, rich colors like royal blue and crimson really add class, and look well with gold. They'd be nice for a library, but if you're going to be spending large amounts of time in the room, it could really suck the energy out of you. Very passionate color. Right. And neutrals work, too, if you want the focus on the stuff IN the room ![]() -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Don't know how to help you with the moving stuph, sorry. Two trips in my compact and I'm moved. However, for the painting...
Do NOT go for the gold. My stepdad recently extended his house and tried painting a 'sunshine' yellow on the walls. Came out looking like 'eggyolk' yellow. Now yellows about as close to gold as any of the primary colors and that particular range is very tricky to deal with. I haven't seen a lot of gold or yellow based colors in houses and that's prolly why. -------------------- |

So you're trading the Steelers for the Rams, eh? Good move. I hear Marc Bulger always wears his helmet.

I don't have much advice for moving as I'm a very light packer. For uni I was able to fit almost everything in two tub crates. However, I would like to welcome you to Misery; I'll only be an hour and a half drive away from you. It's frickin' hot here.
