Cait Sith = Reeve whose in charge of the Midgar Development Program and chairs that department.
The voice... someone else do it it'd take me a while. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

After the Reactor incident in Nibelheim, Shinra used the townspeople for experiments. They were injected with Jenova cells. These are the "caped men" you find throughout the game, labelled with numbers.
Tifa escaped with her mentor, Zengan (not sure if that's the proper name, forgot..) and eventually opened up her little bar in Midgar. Cloud and Zack were caught and "stored" in the basement of the Shinra mansion. They eventually broke out (one would assume) shortly after Cloud was injected with Jenova cells and before Zack. The "hidden" cut scene in the Shinra mansion shows this part, along with them heading to Midgar in hopes of finding a job, Zack being shot in the head by Shinra soldiers, and Cloud being left for dead. So... in short... Cloud has Jenova cells brewin' about in him. Jenova occasionally causes this event called the "Reunion," where its parts are all drawn back to it. This is why you keep running into caped men - they're being drawn towards Jenova. Which is also what leads Cloud to Sephiroth and the black materia. The voices in his head are most likely the Jenova cells trying to manipulate him into finding Sephiroth and bringing him the black materia. It could also be Sephiroth himself directly trying to influence Cloud into doing this. The specifics are left unclear in the game. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

I read a topic on this somwhere before, so here's what I can remember...
I know some people said it was the original Cloud. Since Cloud ended up taking on Zack's character from the start of the game, his original personality is shunned to one side, allowing room for Zack's. However, when his mind is really relaxed or vulnerable, he can hear the 'real' him talking to him. I'm not sure, but I think that you stop hearing that voice in Cloud's head after he's thrown into the lifestream. There's a guide for this at GameFAQS, called something like the Ultimania guide or something, but I'd have to check that. |

I used to think it was Sephiroth... but now I'm quite convinced it's the real Cloud.
It's really confusing, I don't think there is even a right or wrong answer... -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

Quote (sweetdude @ 23rd May 2006 11:45) It's really confusing, I don't think there is even a right or wrong answer... It wouldn't be the first thing in FF7 to have no right or wrong answer. Any answer could be right, after all. |

I never even thought of Yoshimitsu's explanation pertaining to this situation, but it does make sense. I thought it was a voice of Jenova.

no, it's been confirmed by nomura that the "voice" is indeed the original cloud trying to bust out of the zack-shell. notice that the high-pitched noise and the flashes (which are accompanied by cloud speaking to the voice in his head) always happen when there's some factual information that conflicts with the false history that cloud created for himself as a defence mechanism.

i originally thought it was cloud myself but then later on in the game some qoutes from 'this mysterious voice' didn't exactly add up to being in fact cloud so thats why i considered sephiroth and jenova. but hmm thanks gozaru for clearing the matter up, i thought i was the only one who didn't know this inquiry but seems not.

You gotta love the world of FFVII... leaving so much up to the imagination.

Oh, the creators tried to do that. With about 50 spin-off games.

Yeah it's like they're creating more questions than they're answering though...

By some totally unsual coincidence, I ended up chatting up with some friends about FF7 tonight. My friend's theory is that the voice is actually Little Cloud, the one that hasn't made up his fuzzy little past, and I think he's right.
Reading through the script, it makes more sense (even though the two-sided internal monologue thing is a little weird but, hey, we all have these little discussions in our heads.) So I'm probably wrong with my theory. Food for thought. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Well, technically, the voice in his head is little Cloud. After the Temple of the Ancients, when Cloud is giving 'Sephiroth' the Black Materia, you get control over the child version of Cloud. I think that the child Cloud is an almost-physical manifestation of the real Cloud. It makes a lot of sense, really. Like how you can slow Cloud down, but you can't stop him from giving 'Sephiroth' the materia - 'Sephiroth's hold and the Zack-Cloud are too strong for the real Cloud to be able to control the body. This is the most rambly post ever.

i think its a mix of sephroth(his influence on cloud and sephroth killing his friends and family) jenova(the jenova cells put inside cloud ) and child cloud resembling his guilt

Ooh, I'm a bit late. Well, no harm in adding my opinion now, right?
My thought about this matter is one that's kind of a mixture of several of yours'. I mean, like, 2 different consciousnesses; one, the "real" cloud (and the one who appears in child-form), and another personality, perhaps created out of Cloud's confusion and all the really terrible things that happened to him. I don't know about anyone else (and no offense to any Cloud fans), but I got the idea that the voices were less a matter of different entities, and more a matter of mental instability. I mean, not to say he's crazy or anything, but they share certain aspects that seem to be just different sides of the character we all know and love, not Sephiroth or Jenova or anyone else playing mind games with him. Kinda like, good-Cloud versus bad-Cloud. I dunno, I'm probably just way overthinking this, and there likely isn't any real reason behind it, other than to make Cloud an even more interesting character. Oh, and please forgive any typos or things that just really don't make sense. I'm not quite....erm, awake right now.
