Quina Quen. She was hands down the worst fighter in the game. I didn't see any development in her character except for the fact that she got better at catching frogs. The only contribution she had to the story was when Zidane and CO had to find a way to the other continent. Besides that everything she said or did changed absolutely nothing in the story nor did it give us any background what so ever.

Kimahri Ronso hands down. i have at least used all of the other characters outside of battles where you need to use them. i have NEVER used Kimahri when i had the choice to not have him. characters with the sphere grid are overpowered enough, i dont need a blue mage

Wha? Half of this list doesn't even make sense. How are Mog and Gau useless? Both are near the top in combat abilities, in character development Gogo and Umaro have it worse. I bet someone else can defend the other characters.

So I nulled my vote, I didn't find any on the list to be totally useless. I guess I always bench Umaro in VI, but he has his uses in the Colosseum and the Fanatics Tower.

I nulled because none of them are really useless. They all add something to the games they are in, even if it is just some character.

But I don't agree most with 1) Mog, he's a mascot, 2) Gau, his story is emotional, and 3) Fran. Come on, she's hot, man. (I don't think I've ever said that about a digital character either).

Of the game I played (VII through X) I used all these characters. Quina and Kihmari I used quite extensively 'cuz of my love of Blue Mages and their craft. Cait Sith was an intriguing character and powerful mage and monster manipulator. I really can't choose who I thought was useless since I haven't played any pre-FFVII games too extensively.

I've used all of the characters in all of the FF games I have played (including all 16 special characters in tactics), and I don't consider any of them useless.

Yuffie has an excellent ultimate weapon that doesn't lose power when using the morph command.

Cait Sith is a solid mage with an interesting limit break.

Selphie's limit is fun to play around with early on when you don't have much magic, and I find her to be an entertaining and cute character.

Kimahri is fun because he starts in the centre of the sphere grid and can play a different role every time you play the game. I like sending him around his small grid first and then down Rikku's for steal and use.

Fran has the worst overall stats of the 6 main characters in XII, but the difference is too small to really matter. I don't really like the whole bunny girl design, but I do like her voice.

FF games completed: I (psp), II (psp), III (DS), IV (psp), V (GBA), VI (GBA), VII, VIII, IX, X, XI: Nations-Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, XII, XIII, XIV, XV.
Spin-offs: FFIV: Interlude & The After Years, Crisis Core: FFVII, X-2, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Type-0 HD, Dissidia, Dissidia 012, and Tactics (original & WotL).
Enjoyed them all.

I don't really see any of them as really 'useless' as such. I put down Mog because he probably has the least input into an FF story - Yuffie included - and he never made my first team. So, on that basis, he's useless.

Nobody in that list is useless. Not even close.

I got scared when I found Kim in that list. He was my tank, dishing more physical damage than Auron and Tidus together. But I did messed up with the sphere grid.

Quina was awesome. S/he did had backstory. Little, but we've seen worse. Mighty Guard ftw. And Angel Snack.

Selphie, useless? In FF8 nobody's useless, except the ones you don't bother to junction.

I never really used Cait Sith, but he was far from useless. Anyone who one-hit KO's a WEAPON (well, he can, in theory) can't be that useless.

Mog? Water Rondo, anyone? Sun Bath when you need it most? Come on? And Gau has the greatest potential of them all. If you know how to use him.

Edward was... well, useless. But without him, there would be no SPOONY BARD!

Yuffie provided comic relief, was a good fighter, and could morph stuff pretty well.

Fran? Who's that?

I completely agree tk, I'll go ahead and null vote since, having played all the games listed besides VIII and X I can say that none of them are useless.

Oh and fran is a character from FFXII.

Cait Sith(FFVII)

This cat, while it can be annoying to many, it did participate in the story. In reality he was Reeve from Shinra and he helped to get the black materia and during the raid in Midgar.

In battle, he is good at magic. His limit break: Slots... can be really useful as well. Specially Mog Dance.

Yuffie(FFVII)

She's an optional character, so yes, she is not necessary in the story. But when it comes to battle, she and Vincent have the advantage of having all long range weapons.

Selphie Tilmitt (FFVIII)

Dunno why you say she's useless? Her limit break is not bad, IMO (in fact, no one's limit breaks is bad) and she does play a role in the story of FFVIII.

when i said "most" uselss FF character, i was under the assumption that everyone would take into account that of course each character has there own usefulness in the game and there for no one would feel the need to prove a point that is already proven.

Some characters have greater fighting skill, better character development, and contribution to the story than others, I'm jus merely trying to see everyones opinion on which had the least therefore making that the "most" useless FF character( or the character with the least value in a final fantasy game.)

Since i made the poll it's only natural that i was going to pick the ten that stuck out to me the most (I also tried to get characters from a variety of FF games i knew pretty well.)

The mistake I made was that I didn't include "other" as a choice... sorry.

That is the kind of response i was going for I didn't mean to say all the characters were useless just if you had to chose which one would it be.

Everyone must atleast have one character that they think was completely useless and if that character isn't listed above feel free to add your own character and reasoning behind your choice in a post.

I apologize again for assuming everyone understood my thinking and not providing a specific explanation to the topic. It's my first one and Im still learning.

Vincent, all his stats are below average and his involvement in the storyline was basically: "Oh, she's Sephiroth's mum, just so you know"

His magic stat is really good, IMO.

Anyway, I voted Fran. Her stats are all around the lowest in the game, and her involvement in the story is tenuous at best.

Also, while I hate Quina as much as the next person, she is definitely overpowered if you get her magics at the right times and know how to use her.

That's fair enough. I was being a bit defensive since Selphie and Kimahri are two characters I really love in their respective games and I didn't like seeing them called useless. Anyway, I'll stick with my null vote because I always try to see the value in every character and I enjoy using them all.

While I don't think any of these characters are truly useless, I strongly dislike Quina Quen and don't think she adds much to FFIX. I don't find her character development enjoyable either. She's definitely not useless in battle, but outside battle I think she's the closest of these to being useless.

I don't know that I'd call any of them useless. Some of them were pointedly comic relief, to make the mood better, like Selphie-- can you imagine playing through with such serious characters as Squall and Quistis without someone bubbly?

My least liked, however, was Edward. He was useful in the cave, but technically, if they'd never made the cave with such a difficulty to begin with you would have completely never needed him. It almost felt like the only reason you had that part of the game was so that Edward could seem more useful.

We're actually lucky; in games like Chrono Cross and Star Ocean 2, where characters are interchangeable the scripts run very similar. For instance, if they're looking at a crater they're all basically going to say the same things and draw the same conclusions, making the characters useless for plot.

Looking at this list, I see three characters that are useless as far as plot goes: Yuffie (extra character with much less backstory than Vincent), Mog (who helps narrate from time to time but doesn't contribute much to the story's content) and Quina (randomly joins the party, with very little character development through the game).

Now, having narrowed it down, let's look at usefullness. I think Yuffie actually brings something to a party. Depending on what you do with him, Mog can be useful (he was actually my mage). Even if he isn't used, the fact that Mog is playable still has a bit of value given that Moogles appear throughout the series.

But Quina... eh... Pretty worthless. In just about every way.

^ Got to agree with Kuja's list...

Quina if you use him/ her right and have a fair bit of patience finding the Blue Magic around the game this character can become a deadly machine.

Selphie has the The End limit break which cuts out the useless from her..

Cait Sith can knock out a Weapon in one hit solo just watch random youtube vids ^^

Gau is just like Quina [ well- almost ] if you have patience to find the Blue Magic from him he isn't really too bad of a character and team battle remember..

Don't understand why you called Mog useless okay sometimes he can fail to dance which can be mighty frustrating but when he does dance, man is it powerful !!!

Yuffie is annoying not useless pinch.gif

Edward makes most players play FFIV he may suck in battle but people start playing FFIV just to see Edward get bashed and called a Spoony Bard. Edward can't be useless when he is bringing SE heaps of cash ! shifty.gif

For me this is between the characters in FFVI/VII/VIII

So we have: Mog, Gau, Cait Sith, Yuffie and Selphie.

Mog
- Without him there wouldn't be any Umaro, though I still probably wouldn't have noticed.
- His dances are amusing for a while, though finding new ones can be a pain; also falling over. I mean c'mon get a grip!
- He's sweet. In a pointless fluffball character kinda way.
- You could just get the Hairpin though, I mean. Yeah unless you'd feel too bad about letting him fall.
Rating_2/10_

Gau
- Is amusing to watch, though some find him annoying.
- Has a decent backstory.
- I love his rage moves, especially Catscratch but again, there are those who dispise them.
- Yep, totally biast in his favour i'm afraid.
Rating_8/10

Cait Sith
- Useless battler, slot is annoying.
- Heavily overweight, mm? Oh right it's a stuffed animal.
- Annoying cuz he steals the keystone and you chase him knowing you can never catch him dispite how ever close you get to him.
- I suppose he has his sacrificial moment in the Temple of the Ancients, but you don't have time to breath a sigh of relief because 3 seconds later you get a new one.
Rating_2/10_

Yuffie
- You don't really need her and getting her to join you can be a pain.
- Decent limit breaks and a fun side quest though.
- Steals your materia but you need her for Leviathon.
- Provides the antidote to Vincent, or viva versa.
- I really love her theme tune.
Rating_7/10

Selphie
- Is a bit of a weakling
- I never finished FFVIII but I can't blame that all on her.
- Her card is hard to win, though it is good to own.
- I suppose she's a student with you isn't she? Though Squall doesn't seem to like her, but Squall doesn't like anyone I'm surprised he ever had friends.
Rating_5/10

Mog/Cait Sith

Dang.

No Mog = No Unaro
No Cait Sith = No Reeve?

Ahh I suppose Mog is the most useless however it pains me to say it. Cait Sith would be mine for FFVII though.

my vote went to Edward, i thought he would have won by a landslide but without my vote he was tied with Cait Sith and Queena, I truly, just did not like him, I hated having him in the party he was like a waste of a slot to me, no offense to anyone who liked him, but personally i could really do without him

I was near voting for good old Edward, but I noticed that this isn't only a question of battle ability, and Ed adds to the story quite a nice bit - he's not exactly Prince Gordon of Kashuon, but he's getting there.

Also, I saw someone in between asking who Fran was, and I have to say this:
Fran is the Chewbacca to Balthier's Han Solo.

This one's tough since I believe all these characters can be useful. To be honest, any of these can be a powerhouse if you concentrate enough on developing them. For example, Fran was my strongest character in FFXII in terms of physical damage and Selphie was usually one of my top magic users in FFVII (not to mention her limit break was awesome).

If I had to pick one though it'd have to be Quina. I used her from time to time, but I usually neglected her.

Mog is definitely worthless. He has no connection to the plot of FF6 whatsoever and he even has a chance of dying and not coming back. Even you do choose to save him his stats are terrible. The only use he has in the game is recruiting Umaro, but other than that he is a total tool.

I chose Cait Sith but I probably shouldn't have, just because of his strong plot ties in FF7. Oh well. Too late to go back now.
