My characters are about 40 now. I guess it's not necessary to make them achieve level 99?

Yeah, I know about the challenge of not letting the levels gettin' higher than 5 or so, but I just want to be sure about winning the final battle. smile.gif

My characters ranged from level 45 to level 51.

(And isn't there another thread on this topic already?)

That's also something in this game which is apart from most other RPG's; The characters seem to gain level even if they are not in your party.

They seem to gain experience at a rate that's greater than zero but less than the rate at which your active-party members are gaining experience...does anyone know of the actual rate/algorithm? (*tries to poke MasterZED, Detah, or i90east*)

Well this is what's in the Algorithms FAQ regarding the automatic upgrading of levels.

Quote (FAQ)
When a character first joins your party (in the World of Balance, or the World of Ruin), their level is calculated based on the average level of your current party members. The level for characters is also recalculated at a few other points in the game as well.

I'm not sure what those other points in the game are. Perhaps other people can have fun pointing them out.

My levels average around the typical 40-50 level mark unless I level up the main group to 80-99.

Average? Hmm. Well, adding in my last four or five level 99 games, probably somewhere around 70 or 75.

Usually they average from 50-56. A few times I got them to levels 99 and once at around 28-30.

I know for sure FFVII also raises the levels of secondary characters, and I think all later FFs do it as well.

Anyway, I tended to be around 60 or so.

Yeah - FFVII does, but VIII doesn't. I prefer the secondary characters not having their levels raised - I have some horrible (unfounded) suspicion that when they level up by themselves the stats stay the same... dry.gif

Oh - and mine were about 55-75 ish (mostly).

The experience and the Economizers are well worth it!
But my best leveled ones are Terra,Cyan,Gogo, and Sabin.(I nearly always use them, they can become the most powerful characters in the game if used correctly!)

I usually finish off around level 60, and seem to have a really hard time getting past 70.

Does anyone else feel like there's kind of a ceiling on what level you can reach, like with the Suikoden games?

I have three people that're I think level 80. They're the "Leaders " of the little groups for the final towers, and one or two assistant leaders, who're about 60-70. The others are each levels 52, save for Gogo and Umaru. They can be level 2 for all I care. Each person knows almost every spell because I spend time in that little desert in the WOR by I think Maranda, with Tonberries and weird vacuum-like things. I forget their names, and the Tonberries might be called "Pugs." ^^;

...I'm a very orderly person when it comes to massacring Kefka.

I always get my characters to level 99 before beating the game, but I think what your looking for is that level at which I usually reach the point where I could beat it if I so desired, so, 55 or so

The first time I played the game, I was smart and trained all of my characters, every last one, to exactly L60 before entering Kefka's Tower.

I hope I don't need to tell you what was wrong with that. thumbdown.gif

The other time I remember beating the game, I think I was in the 48-52 range and was almost disappointed at how easily the final battle went

My average levels of my characters is usually from 60-75 or so (on any final fantasy), unless i really work it and level them up to around 95 or so.

Sometimes i just feel like breaking loose and leveling like crazy...Dont you?

My characters were around Level 40 by the end. The final boss fights were easy because I taught them all Ultima, Haste 2, Cure 3, Life 3, and Life 2. Just pound on them with Ultima and heal when necessary.

I usually have a couple of characters at level 60-65 before I enter Kefka's Tower, while others (usually the ones I rarely use, like Umaro or Gau) are at level 40. That works well enough for me, and really, I'm way too lazy to level anyone up to lev. 99.
