I made this poll a long time ago, and thought I'd resurrect it to see what the new people think... and also if the old people have changed their minds.
![]() The choices each list the guitarist, their band(s), and a sample song for you to listen to if you can't decide (or just want to listen to some killer soloing). Also, I'm an oldies fan, so all of you Rush and RATM fans can click other and remind me who their guitarists' names are, etc. Myself - I choose Jimmy Page, just slightly over Slowhand Clapton. Though many might think of Page as sloppy, all you have to do is listen to Stairway to Heaven... and the guitar of classics like Heartbreaker, Bring it on Home, and Bon-Y-Aur Stomp. Plus, I saw him at one point play the guitar with a violin bow for Dazed and Confused, and was sold. ![]() -------------------- I close my mouth now and I scream, Open the door, there's nothing worth redeeming I saw your face before in rough, You should wait around a while, your body's bound to turn up. You can read me like a book, Edwin ![]() Yeah, all these guitarists were great back in the day and remain to be the gods of the instrument. But that was, as I stated, back in the day. Who's the modern day God of the Guitar? Alpha of the 6-string? Overseer of the Axe? My friends, the answer lies within Tom Morello (formerly of Rage, currently with Audioslave). I've always said that if Jesus ever played the guitar, he'd sound just like TM. The way he plays his guitar is awesome. And the icons and pedals and add-ons he uses to make squiggle noises and booming wahs with his guitar blow his competition away. Now, anyone can use a foot pedal to distort the sound of the guitar. But not just anyone can do it.. and mold it into the song. You want proof of Morello's god-like guitar slinging? Listen to songs such as: "Know Your Enemy" -Rage "Bulls on Parade" -Rage "Guerilla Radio" -Rage "Killing in the Name Of" -Rage "Another Brick in the Wall" -Layne Staley & Tom Morello "Hypnotize" -Audioslave "Bring Em Back Alive" -Audioslave "Ashes in the Fall" -Rage all flash Morello's guitar goodness.... -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

My vote, of course, goes to Alex Lifeson of Rush.
Alex Lifeson never gets any respect for several reasons. Â Firstly, he plays in the shadow of his bandmates, both of whom are generally considered to be among the best at their respective instruments. Â Secondly, he doesn't 'shred' as fast as he can to show off during his solos like many 'guitar gods' do. Â In the '70s, Lifeson played some crazy stuff. Â His Working Man solo, for example, is the sort of basic 'classic rock' guitar playing we all know from guys like Zeppelin's Page. Â But then the '80s came around, and Rush became more interested in songwriting than virtuoso playing. Â Suddenly, Lifeson's role in the band changed. Â Throughout the '80s and early '90s, Lifeson developed an ambient, mood-setting style that most rock critics couldn't understand. Â Suggested Listening: - Working Man - From Rush's first album; basic classic rock stuff - The Trees - Nice classical guitar at the beginning - Kid Gloves - One of the weirdest solos I've ever heard; amazingly, this track won Lifeson "Guitarist of the Year" honours from several publications in 1984 - Time Stand Still and Mystic Rhythms - Maybe the best examples of Lifeson's ambient style; you can barely hear the guitar at some points, but the texture of his sound is absolutely beautiful - Live recordings of Freewill, By-Tor and the Snowdog, and YYZ feature some killer guitar work There's more to being a great instrumentalist than being great at your instrument. Alex Lifeson is a great player from a technical point of view, but there are better ones. What sets Lifeson apart is his commitment to the overall song, rather than showing off his talent like many guitar players. -------------------- Always hopeful, yet discontent; he knows changes aren't permanent -- But change is! |

I couldn't decide between Page, Clapton, or Rhodes. All three of them are great in their own way and outshine all other guitarists.

A note to NP:
I put Stevie Ray up there because, frankly, he might have been the greatest guitarist ever if he hadn't died so early in his career. All one has to do to have proof of that is listen to his version of Little Wing, possibly the best instrumental ever done. On a side note, when Stevie Ray died in the helicopter crash (1992 was it?) his band had to replace him with two guitarists. -------------------- I close my mouth now and I scream, Open the door, there's nothing worth redeeming I saw your face before in rough, You should wait around a while, your body's bound to turn up. I voted for Mark Knopfler, again, because I think he's an amazing guitarist. Dire Straits would be nowhere near the same if he wasn't in the band. I like the actual music parts of nearly all their songs more than the lyrics just because he adds so much with his ability. For evidence, listen to all of Brothers In Arms and the last two minutes or so of Tunnel of Love. Goosebumps.

Other, Alex Lifeson of Rush. He hardly gets enough credit. A lot of the time, you don't get to see his true talent, because as Alexandr said, he's mostly in the shadow of Geddy and Neil, and he doesn't play many crazy solos. However, he is basically at the core of songwriting, and he comes up with amazing stuff. Go listen to Working Man or By-Tor and the Snowdog, some older goodness.
Jimmy Page probably gets my skill award. He's damn good. Tom Morello gets special recognition for his unique style. Iommi and Rhoads should be mentioned. Slash is sick. -------------------- Lou: There's a couple of guys fighting down at the aquarium, Chief. Wiggum: Do they still sell those frozen bananas? Lou: I think so. Wiggum: Let's roll. |

I don't suppose any of you folks have heard of a man named Jeff Beck? He's like the guitar god the guitar gods bow to. But he's almost an inner circle kinda thing. If you heard of him, chances are it was only in a rock specific magazine. Like apparently so many guitar gods, I believe he was in the Yardbirds.
Sheesh, Clapton, Page, Beck...what was with that band that it could get a constant lineup like that? -------------------- |

*raises his hand* Completely forgot about him... though if I had I would have assumed no one else had heard about him and not put him on anyway. Â Another of my faves, though. A cookie to anyone who knew the Yarbirds were the band which eventually became Led Zeppelin after Clapton left and Page joined. certainly there are "better" guitarists as in talent. But the first two names of guitarists are Kurt Cobain (nirvana) and Kirk Hammett (metallica). And those two will be, at least in my book, the true definition of a true guitarist.

I'd like to point out that most of the guitar in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was performed by a guest guitarist, none other than Eric Clapton. -------------------- I close my mouth now and I scream, Open the door, there's nothing worth redeeming I saw your face before in rough, You should wait around a while, your body's bound to turn up. Not many of you know of this guy. Alexi Laiho. lead guitarist and singer of Children Of Bodom is by far my guitar god. Listen to the guitar playing on the song "Kissing The Shadows" or " Bodom Beach Terror" it'll totally blow you away.
Yngwie Malmsteen. this guy makes Van Halen look like some punk rock guitarist. He can make your head spin with two notes. Anything from him is truly great. those are my bids, from yours truly, the metal authority.

While the guitarists listed are all phenomenal, I suggest for sheer technical ability on an acoustic level, I say Tim Reynolds, and I don't even know his stuff that well.
I say find, from the Live at Luther College album, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, "Stream." Dave doesn't participate in that track at all, so all you get is four-plus minutes of incredible Tim guitar. You can listen to that entire album and note that if there is something cool you hear, it's Tim. Dave just ain't that good on guitar. I'm looking for some Tim Reynolds solo stuff now. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Gah I can't believe I forgot to write this name.
Dimebag Darrell (formerly of Pantera) also used to be known as "Diamond Darrell". He is by far one of the most insane, creative guitarists around. Listen to "This Love" from Pantera and then switch it around to something like "Cowboys From Hell". The guitar work will just blow you away. Well, a lot of people don't give this duo credit, but Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman from Slayer are two great guitarists in their own rights. Listen to the harmonic work on the intro to "Dead Skin Mask" or "South Of Heaven" and their insane fretplaying on tracks like "Raining Blood" or "Disciple". They're two totally insane guitarists, and in my books deserve a ton of glory for what they've done. I'm not sure of their names, but listen to "Ten Years After" particularly the songs "Woodstock" and "I'd Love To Change The World". It's got that old rock, classic feel and sounds really great. and I'll agree with you all, Tom Morello is one hell of a great guitarist. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Yes Malmsteen all the way, i couldn't remember his first name right, thanks. This guy is by far one of the best guitarists ever. When you hear him play, you think hes going all out, then all of a sudden he kicks it a up a notch. At concerts this dude plays with his hands, his teeth, and his ass. The funny part is, when he plays with his ass (not trying to use offensive language) He makes other guitarists seem kinda pathetic. He has played with his ass so hard that smoke has come from the guitar! Might I recommened "Arpeggios From Hell" -------------------- This one time I punched a bear in the forehead TO DEATH! Dave Mustaine-Megadeth-Hangar 18, Mechanix, Sumpnoy of Destruction, Paranoid Steve Harris-Iron Maiden- Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Tony Iomi- Black Sabbath-Paranoid, Children of the Grave I'd say also Van Halen's "Erupution" Rhoads's live Crazy Train or Paranoid, Hendrix (I can't remember the song title, but it has big time destortion and was Hulk Hogan's theme song) And I'd definately put Slash's Paradise City ![]() -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again?
