At their recent presentation at E3, Sony dropped several PS3-related bombs, including several key pieces of info about the PS3.

The PS3's new controller is indeed a Dualshock 3. It looks extremely similar to the Dualshock 2, but now features a USB port and a built-in motion senseor with "six degrees of freedom". Here's a picture

The Sony PS3 will be available in two models - a standard version with 20 GB of hard drive space, and a deluxe version with 60 GB of hard drive space. The lighter version will cost $499 and the deluxe will cost $599. This is not a terribly surprising price, considering the PS3's specs and production cost, but it is also significantly more expensive than the prices of its competitors.

So yes, if you do the math, it is quite probable that you can buy both a Wii and an XBox 360 for the price of a single PS3 - I say "probable" because we aren't positive of the Wii's price yet, but we'll probably find that out at Nintendo's presentation tomorrow afternoon. Start saving up, people.

EDIT: I edited in the controller bit. Here's the pic again: Dualshock 3

Can you add in your own HDs? By the time I can afford a PS3, I'm sure I'll have a terabyte of unused drives laying around. Seriously, though, did they give any specs about how these drives will connect to the motherboard, or what the specs might be? It seems like it could be fun for the modders like the XBox has been.

And I'm out of touch. Are all consoles using mini-USB to USB cords now for their controllers? I think that's a great idea.

Any thoughts on what the benefits of the larger hard drive would be? I don't have an X-box or anything, so I don't have any concept of what the hard drive is even for.

The hard drive can let you, among other things, save your progress directly onto the system.

It also allows for personal modification of your system, such as burning games onto your x-box'd hard drive so you don't need a disk to play them.

The PS3 is pulling a huge M$ with this pricing system. There's the $100 difference, and they've pulled just as many features from the $500 edition as M$ did from their core version. I don't remember all of the missing features, but I know that it will be missing memory card support, and therefore your old game saves won't be backwards compatable. You'll also miss WiFi (which they promised a standard feature, like M$ did their hard drive) and HDMI output.

In short, any true gamer getting a PS3 has to get the $600 dollar edition.

Yeah. I could definetly get used to that controller compared to the boomerang. Guess Batman wasn't needed around here anymore. Ah well.

Is it Sony's fault they're a generation ahead of MS and two ahead of Nintendo? Yes. Yes it is. I think what we're going to see is, that this establishes a foothold for Playstation 3, while PS2 lasts on and on. That foothold allows developers breathing room to tap the potential of the system. Effectively, that's the launch date for impatient and rich people. Those who want the big guns and have patience, just need to sit on their hands and wait for the oncoming storm. PS3 frankly isn't needed: PS2 can hold itself against XBox360 for at least another year, and frankly, the Wii doesn't have much to offer to anyone but Nintendo gamers as it is IMO.

And since Wii's going to be cheap and cheerful you can buy one of them while you wait.

Still, this little bastard's a powerhouse and a half. That's a bargain price as it stands when you think about it. 360, as far as I know, will not support HDDVD gaming, just movies (but I think they're gonna reconsider that if they already haven't) and personally, I'm rather excited by Blu-Ray and HDDVD for gaming potential.

Still, could be cheaper to buy an F-22...

I don't see how they are selling the PS3 so cheap, to be honest. The BlueRay HD players by themselves will be near 1000 dollars starting out.

/me misses the boomerang sad.gif

As for BlueRay, I'm not entirely sold on the subject, so the inclusion of this feature doesn't entice me any more or less.

I don't know if this was a stupid rumor or not, but I heard that Nintendo is suing Sony based on their patented sensor technology which was "copied" by the PS3's "six degrees of freedom". Apparently Sony needs to redesign the controller or face the lawsuit. But I wouldn't take this "news" too seriously, as I just heard it from a non-official source (i.e. word of mouth).

~$600 for PS3. Damn! While I understand that this price point may actually be low b/c of the BluRay capabilities, I see a lot of people passing on the PS3.......like me, who can't afford a $600 gaming system

As much of a baragin as it is in the long run, for me, a 16 year old looking for a job while in school, that's too steep of a price. If the Wii lives up to its 200 dollar price tag, then I could probably buy that immedietly, and that's most likely what I;m going to do.

That;s a major improvement from the boomerang, looks like the best course of action is to wait at least six months after all new consoles have come out to see which is really the best, but I still probably won't get a PS3

I'm guessing you can still transfer game saves via USB cable and linking it up to your PS2 with the memory cards in it. I'll be glad for the lack of memory cards though, they bug me. "There is no memory card detected. Please insert a PS2 ®computer System memory card into the slot" Blagh.

WiFi will likely come as an attachment, again. *Sigh* Damn sony and their money grabbing add-ons.

I didn't mind the batarang controller actually. I thought it looked nifty. But the motion sensor on the original model makes up for that loss, and the USB as well. Good job, Sony!

Well I like the over all look of the PS3 but I have a gripe already and I won't have one till they come out. It looked to me like it has a CD pinch load system, by that I mean you just stick the disc in a whole, neat huh? No. They suck they can crack the edge of a disc and can over time completely destroy the outter edge of a disc. I have only seen the pictures of them and haven't had the chance to see one in person but, I guess I'll have to ask. Does it actually have a tray or is it pinch and pull?

That would make me happy. I don't want to have to beat Fatal Frame 2 another billion times to unlock the scary Sae kimono.

I know PS1 games couldn't figure out a PS2 memory card, but wouldn't there be some way to trick it into thinking that the memory stick (or will games just save to the hard drive?) is one? I can't imagine that Sony would cease their trend of backwards compatibility (that would be all I needed to not buy a PS3), and eliminating saved game support would certainly do that.
