What were they thinking......
Somebody at Nintendo should be getting a pink slip right about now.

If you'll excuse me, I'm off to take a Wii

I'm with the crowd that says this whole thing is some elaborate publicity stunt. And if the present conversation is any indication, it's working rather well.

If Wii really is the name of the new console, I'm torn between two conflicting perspectives. On one hand, it's a tremendously stupid name by any standard. On the other, it provides so much opportunity for childish humor that I can't help but rejoice. Wii!

I'll be buying it regardless.

Neither my friend nor I can put it better than Chris did, so I'll just say that Wii agree.

My friend mocked that name so much. But as Juliet said, doesn't a rose by any other name still smell sweet? (LOL, reading that play did have some real world use happy.gif )

I still want one, and maybe their right. Maybe we will grow into it like the iPod and Yahoo. But I didn't notice much wrong with those names. That's a very big maybe.

Ideally people wouldn't care about the system having a stupid name and go on it's performance and all that... but when I heard this I re-considered. I'm sure many other people are and will be doing the same thing. Sometimes a name can make or break a product... but then look a "Febreze." Fuh-breeze. Now who the hell came up with that crap? Still, it's a great household item and people do seem to love it. Time will tell.

Wii need a Revolution!!!

I was already thinking about not buying it. Now I'm definitely not buying it. If any of my friends get one I'll wii on them. mad.gif That is the worst name in the history of badly named sytems. thumbdown.gif

What's funny is that the word only sounds remotely funny in English, and it's not a funny word in Japanese. xD So basically, we're probably the only people complaining about it.

you can't even make "wii" in japanese. ウィー? it's not natural. i'm ambivalent on nintendo right now; my little brother has a gamecube, but i never saw the need to get one. at any rate i borrow his to play games like smash or mario tennis or w/e (certainly be borrowing it for the new zelda) -- nintendo gamecube is a pretty good multiplayer system. but i already don't like the new one. the controller sucks, the specs look weak compared to ps2, and the name is "wii?"

some markerting ploy.

My new computer doesn't have the necessary font to see what Japanese characters you used, but I'd assume that it's "ui" or "ui-". I don't think there are many native words that use that combination of vowels, but that's how they start off foreign names like "Winston."

Given the Japanese penchant for borrowing random English words (or parts of words) and the lack of the bathroom joke across translation, I can see how someone over at Nintendo Japan could think this would be cool. I just can't see how it got past anyone over here.

The name isn't going to affect whether or not I buy a console. If they have a good variety of old games available with reasonable means of obtaining them, I'm in. I'll just refuse to call it by it's real name.

Ditto for me, basically. I'm currently on a soapbox right now only referring to the new mechine only as "the new Nintendo system". If it's going to be as good as I'm inclined to think it will be, though, I'll have to get one eventually.

I actually knew an asian kid named Wii (not sure if it was spelled that way, but it was pronounced 'we') he was of Korean descent. The only reason I remember this was because of the confusion his name created(From before I knew him); two of my friends "Hey check out this drawing of Darth Vader"
This was a very accurate drawing of Darth Vader so I asked them who drew it.
"Wii drew it"
I knew that neither of them could draw that good, so I said, "No way you guys can't draw that good who drew it"
"Wii drew it"
"o.k. just say who drew it, I know neither of you drew it"
"No you dumbass not us, the new kid, Wii"
and of course I did feel real stupid, as I had not payed attention when the teacher introduced him.

That's how it'd be spelled, in katakana anyway. (And no, it isn't used to often, but which of those irregular katakana are? tongue.gif)

Amusing. A little biased, entirely non-serious in some places, but with some valid points.

Aside from that, am I the only one worried the Wii might simply try to force its controller's "innovative" features into games like they did with the DS's touchscreen, where it might not be needed?

The name's monosyllabic and sure makes for easy advertising, but I can't get it out of my head that it's the dumbest name I've ever heard. It doesn't give any scope to the system -- I like to think that titles like the "Dreamcast," "Saturn," or "Dolphin" all had character..."Wii" is memorable because it's so easy to make fun of. =p

I probably won't buy it anyway 'less Saturn games are available for download. Thought it would be my chance to play Nights Into Dreams, but it ain't lookin' too good. Oh well...

But didn't they say that other non Nintendo systems can be played on the Wii (wow, Wii is replacing Revolution in my mind.)

I recently found that Fire Emblem:Geneology of the Holy War is avalible for the Wii, so their is a chance that it could come to the states. Though the chance of that happening is lower than the chance of Mother 3 coming here.

I'll just come out and say it outright.

The name change sucks.

The interesting thing, though, is that, since I wasn't aware of the "official" pronunciation, I pronounced it differently, and, in the style of Koji Igarashi I shall now excommunicate the "official" pronunciation.

How shall I do that? Well, may I simply ask Nintendo the question, "Wii did you do this?!"

It's Wii as in "we," not "why." C'mon now.

I'm beginning to doubt the next-gen Nintendo console (whatever it's name is/will be). Honestly, how many twists and turns can my fanboy loyalty withstand?

I know how you feel, though. The reasoning goes something like, "Well, if they can't even pick a name that isn't obviously laughable, how can we expect them to do anything else right?" I know there's a fly in that logic ointment, but... What if this stupid name really is an example of Nintendo just not caring what their fanbase thinks anymore?

I guess I'll save a couple hundred bucks?

After reading that article that Silverlance posted, I have found myself wondering if I'll even get one. And not because of the name. I'm not intersted in light gun games and I'm not interested in gaming for those that aren't in to gaming. I guess I'm just not up there with NIntendo's vision anymore. I like the Gamecube. Nintendo got back in my favor the the GC. Why can't we just have the GC 2?

God, if I had a penny for every time someone told me Red Steel was a light gun game I would melt them and pour liquid copper down their throats. Red Steel is NOT a light gun game, the reason the crosshair isn't centered in the screens is because Ubisoft was smart enough to have a delay time, so if you move the crosshairs it takes a second for the camera to react and follow, so you don't get motion sick because the camera is too sensitive. There are also a lot of other redeeming qualities for Red Steel. The focus on accuracy, the unique setting, the concept of great AI with rewards for sparing your enemies instead of killing them. And even in the Game Informer issue says that control like this in an FPS is a huge step in the right direction.

With that pent up rage out of the way, this name is a bit... odd. I've heard conspirecy theories about how Nintnedo hasn't Trademarked the name "Wii" yet and therefore many people believe this is all just a gimick so they can shout "YOUVE JUST BEEN PUNK'D" at E3. If they do decide to keep the name, well, I guess it's thier decision. Their dumb, dumb decision. They could have had the decency to have spelled it correctly. Though, as the recent PA podcast mentioned, the tagline "wii will change everything" is pretty hot.

Edit
Upon further review of the article RL posted, I find that it is one of the most incorrect trolling articles I've heard. They say that because the rev has less analog sticks on it's controller, it has to be worse than the GC! Oh, use the unique controller in NEW ways, possibly even surpassing the broken controls for console shooters? What's that? </rage>

Just like Metroid Prime wasn't an FPS, cuz y'know... it's Metroid man, it can't be an FPS now, can it? Sure it had the same mechanics, maybe a little less trigger-happy shooting and more exploring, but it can't be an FPS.

A rose by any other name indeed... wink.gif

Well, for one, metroid Prime is regarded by me, and many others to be an FPA (First Person Adventure). Not many FPSs have lock on features. Second, a light gun game means it's an on-rails shooter, like an arcade shooter where you don't move but you just shoot wherever it takes you. Red steel allows free movement.

Yeah, but those kinds of thing are such minor details they hardly affect the core game mechanics: you shoot stuff, it's a first person view... Wether you use a spoon or a knife to spread your peanut butter on your toast, it's still a peanut-butter toast in the end.

Anyhow, this is way off topic, so I'm gonna stop. tongue.gif Sorry about that.

Unfortuanley the rumors have been debunked, as seen here: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/04/wii-trad...naysayers-wiip/

Too bad, I was hoping they would change the name.

I thought it was common knowledge Metroid Prime was a FPA. Nintendo is always expanding genres. And saying that lock on features hardly affect the core game mechanics proves you've never touched the game.

But on topic, the names kind of grown on me though I still wish they'd change it.

It doesn't affect the core game mechanics. It's a first person camera angle gameplay with guns. 'Lock-on' in a minor thing. Look at Counterstrike. Does hacking with an aimbot suddenly make the game a First Person Adventure?
Think Mario Sunshine. Force yourself to always look through his eyes. That's FPA. Because at the end of the day, Shooter and Adventure games are clearly obvious by their execution and the angle of view affects neither.

That said, Penny-Arcade already covered this naming change in sufficient detail. With E3 coming up, it'll be interesting to see how it's marketed. I think it's a marketing mistake to use a name for the system that you can't spread to the titles of your games. Mario Kart DS is brilliant, it reinforces the system and brand. Mario Kart Double Dash is not so good.

And if I hear Mario Kart Wii, I might as well give up on Nintendo ever living up to potential to get away from the kiddie market. Family games != kiddie. Board games like Monopoly proved this a long time ago.

I'm more excited about the Wii now that E3 draws near. And according to GamePro, it may have a $200 price tag. Tough to bad that, don't you say? It (almost) makes up for the silly name.

Price is the ultimate drawing point for me. I can choke down the silly name for $200. That is a best guess scenario, though, I imagine. Likely will cost a bit more... wii'll see.

I have to agree. What is the big deal with names anyway? Ok, I have a solution. I, for one, will still persist in reffering to it as the revolution. Anyone looking for an easy way to get through this can join me.
