The official name of Nintendo's latest video game console has finally been announced. After months of speculation and some hope that they might just stick with "Revolution", the new third generation console will be...
Wii. No, that's not a typo. It's pronounced like "we", and, to quote R51, "I wish it were on nintendo.co.jp so I could hope they wouldn't give it a stupid name for the US." It's unique, it's easy to remember, it's...spelled with two i's. The flash is pretty good, though. Source: Nintendo -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

I remember for awhile there was evidence out there that they were renaming the Rev the "Nintendo GO", but it turned out to be a rumor fueled by old Revolution concept logos or something. I think it's still too early to say something like this, especially if it's not on Nintendo of Japan; we'll know for sure by E3.

And shop workers everywhere will cringe anytime anyone says they need a Wii.
To be honest, it seems like this sort of thing is, to some extent, an attempt to drum up the sort of interest they'll need in order to compete with the PS3 and 360. I dread to think of the accessories and peripherals. |

They could call it the Nintendo Crapbox for all I care, I still think it's going to be a good, affordable system, and I still plan on buying one when it comes out.

Can you imagine going into a store and asking the clerk for a "Wii"? It sounds like wee, and that's a polite word for, well, you know. It also sounds even sillier when you try to pluralize it.

Personally as long as the Revolution kicks ass (which is what i'll always call it)
I could care if the called it Wii But maybe they'll change the name of the console when it comes to america, kindo of like a fanicom/nintendo thing. But who knows I'm still planning on buying one -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

This is just an initial thought, but I'm guessing that the switch to "Wii" might have been influenced by the mild criticism that Nintendo faced by not changing the name of the Nintendo DS. The DS went straight from being called the "DS" in production to the "DS" in the final form. I don't know if this was the general consensus, but I know I read a few things here and there about the disappointment generated by the lack of creativity in the DS' name. Seeing as Nintendo is always looking to flavor things up, maybe they wanted to throw something out there ridiculously outlandish just for the sake of changing the production name. Besides, doesn't it make sense that the "Revolution" should have an entirely revolutionary (read: so stupid nobody really understands it) name?
It takes some getting used to, but I think it could be Wiicked ...lol i love puns guyz ![]() -------------------- I find your lack of faith disturbing... |

I'm with the crowd that says this whole thing is some elaborate publicity stunt. And if the present conversation is any indication, it's working rather well.
If Wii really is the name of the new console, I'm torn between two conflicting perspectives. On one hand, it's a tremendously stupid name by any standard. On the other, it provides so much opportunity for childish humor that I can't help but rejoice. Wii! I'll be buying it regardless. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. Funny, I thought its admitedly cool feature to download older games was netting it all the attention it could ever want. No matter, I imagine it'll be pretty successful inspite of the silly name, not because of it. -------------------- |
