I'm pretty sure I showed this around to those at the CoN chat a long time ago. I recently rediscovered it (ie, today) and decided to submit something of mine to CoN.

The idea behind this is that it's supposed to be as if Amano did the art for FFVII (a concept sketch, really). Putting my usual Kame touches, it leans more to my own work rather than a true Amano homage.

I like it overall, but I have a few comments.

The shoulder pauldron looks too much like a turtle shell for my taste. Since you seem to like turtles, though, this might just be a way to "personalize" your art.

The face is well done, but it doesn't remind me of Cloud, really.

I like the hair, but it lacks the forward spikeyness of Cloud's look.

The sword hilt is well done.

I don't remember Cloud having earrings.... but then again, I have a bad memory.

Very nice bit of work in it's own right, though it doesn't scream "Cloud" to me.

I dig it though.

You know, for not having any piecings (not even earings), I sure like to put my subjects with a lot of them. When I was doing it, it just 'felt' right.

*shrug*

Oh, and I forgot to mention this earlier, but this piece is extremely low key. You can count the pigments I used on one hand (try it!).

Amano did do concept art for FFVII. (And VIII, and of course IX. He does it for all the main-numbered games.)

But wow, it looks really good. Looks pretty much like he drew it, although more realistic and with wilder hair.

He looks like a pretty-boy rather than a powerful warrior who can destroy the Masamune-weilding Sephiroth. It almost reminds me of a character who is a blend of Cloud and FFIX's villain, Kuja. I really dig the picture, you did a great job and I have to mention the awesome sword handle.

There's the Amano Cloud.
I actually think yours is really cool.
I really like your watercolouring, and I loooooove seeing the lines under the watercolours.

His pauldron looks turtley in that, so I think it's a good style.
Besides, very few of the Amano sketches look a lot like the characters to say that this one doesn't would be silly, since his don't. :P <-- If it doesn't make sense, it's because I'm still waking up.

My only beef is that Cloud's eyes are blue.

That's a spiffy piece of work right there. The neck has some neat subtle color work. Bravo.

And if I remember correct, Cloud's eyes turned green from the Mako stuph.

Yeah, when I did him I was thinking about him after the Mako infusion. The green eyes are color that stands out prominently because of the limited pallet.

Glad everyone is liking the turtley pauldron happy.gif I liked it. I purposely made it so that the underdrawing would show through. If I recall, many of Amano's pieces have that going on.

Pretty good. Agreed about the eyes and the hair. He reminds me of Super Saiyan 2 Gohan.

I love the expression on his eyes.

I think your drawing would definitely look much better if you emulate Nomura's design and choice of clothing and gear, but it's up to you.

I really like it. Its very artistic and moody, and you can tell it was influenced by Amano's style, but it also isn't a pure copycat of Amano's work. Bravo!
