A lot of people in America like to think of today as just another day off work, or school. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday should be more than that, though. I implore everyone to take some time today to reflect on some of the things MLK stood for, such as peace and racial brotherhood. And, if you feel it necessary, think of some things you can do to help these situations in America (or Canada Thank You. -------------------- Hip-Hop QOTW: "Yeah, where I'ma start it at, look I'ma part of that Downtown Philly where it's realer than a heart attack It wasn't really that ill until the start of crack Now it's a body caught every night on the Almanac" "Game Theory" The Roots |

In Canada, we don't tend to learn about him, and we don't take a day off...however I did have a class in University on religion and we had a chance to learn about him then :-) And I had heard about him before (especially the quote "...I have a dream, that one day my poor little children will grow up in a land where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin...")
I do agree with you though, Gears. We should honour people like him everywhere, and take time to reflect on it, and even apply his teachings to situations today. -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

I too feel he people like him should be remembered more than what he is, ESPICALLY here. In N. WI not one school has off, nor hardly anyone learns about what he did for the nation. To most everyone here, it was just another day, which makes me somewhat angered...it's his holiday, so we ALL should celebrate it.

Yeah, we're all run by racists down in southern wisconsin too. I'm on the very border, and we don't get any days off besides the essentials (Christmas, easter, memorial, labor, and another one i think). Meanwhile my best friend who recently moved 15 minutes inward to Illinois gets ANYTHING and EVERYTHING off. I also think that him as well as other people of his status should be learned more about at school. We had some kind of quick speech over the morning announcements about him, but I don't remember a word, because I've naturally tuned them out over the past 3 years.

I wish we were taught more about it than what we were told. I think the only thing that we were ever told was in the 3rd Grade about who Martin was and what he believed in. And we were told his "I have a Dream..." speech. Of course, we were 3rd Graders so we obviously didn't know how much influence he had. And it wasn't until only 2 years ago that the state of New Hampshire actually recognized this day. [we call it Civil Rights Day and so much MLK B-day now] But still, we should take a little bit of time to realize what he fought for.

i definitely agree with you in celebrating the day, gears. though it may not be much to anyone, me not being at all of african american descent, im against racism and he was such a major person in the decrease of racial boundaries. i get enraged when someone makes any kind of racial comment against anyone, because my girlfriends whole family is spanish, and thats like theyre taking a stab at my own family. i think today should be celebrated and people should recognize it more so than they do.

How can you possibly say that with what your location says right now? That's an incredibly racist statement on so many levels it's not even funny. -------------------- Hip-Hop QOTW: "Yeah, where I'ma start it at, look I'ma part of that Downtown Philly where it's realer than a heart attack It wasn't really that ill until the start of crack Now it's a body caught every night on the Almanac" "Game Theory" The Roots |

i apologize for that, but the honest nature of that was misinterpreted. its kind of difficult for me to explain, but im from long island which is not a tough place by any means, yet many people think theyre like the folks from brooklyn, which is ridiculous, seeing as how the particular area im from costs a ridiculous amount to live in, and when you have that kind of money, and you go to a little prep school you are NOT living the thug life. when i see someone paler than i am wearing a doorag and cursing out their mothers, pulling their pants down past thier asses and calling other white people "niggaz" cuz they think that theyre actually going to get away with it, that pisses me off. theyre just people who cant accept that no matter how badly they want to be all gangsta and thugged out, they arent, theyre just a supid poser making a fool of themselves for the world to see. if someone cant accept that theyre mommy and daddy make a lot of money, and they do not live in the ghetto, theyre just lying to themselves, and that pisses me off.
if you still dont like me, i understand, but i spoke the truth in my mind, and thats still what i hold to be true. i changed my location because it wasnt really meant to be offensive to anyone, but if it is, then i dont want it there. my apologies. Cheers. -------------------- You watch the world exploding every single night Dancing in the sun, a newborn in the light Say goodbye to gravity and say goodbye to death Hello to eternity and live for every breath Your time will come... |

I understand. I know many people like that, too. My objection is that the word "wigger" implies that when a white person is acting poor, uneducated, and thug-like, they're acting like a black person. It's these stereotypes that the media keeps perpetuating that are a huge detriment to the black community. I understand where you're coming from, I just feel you chose the wrong word to state your opinion. We're cool now, though.
