How many of you played Mystic Quest? C'mon now be honest...I still have that game in my collection of cartridges. It was the first RPG I ever played, and quite frankly, it got me hooked on the genre. After that it was nothin but Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire ( another great in my opinion) Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, Earthbound, Secret of Mana...the list goes on and on to include the ill fated Lagoon and Drakkhen as well.
Just kinda remininsce(sp?) for a second on the old schoolness that is Mystic Quest. C'mon, you know Phoebe owned! I thought it was decent, despite the bad rep it got.
I remember being stuck on a particular puzzle in the Focus Tower that involved pushing a pillar to a certain location; that made it stay there when you'd leave, allowing you to jump across it to cross over a gap. Since objects would always reset when you'd leave a room, that had me stumped for a bit (mind you, I was quite young at the time.) Decent game, but I hated the fact encounters were visible (believe it or not!) Nothing annoyed me more than having to fight the same enemies at the same places all the time. At least random encounters gave you a chance to run through a small area without being forced to fight the same 5 monsters everytime (maybe more encounters, maybe less, none sometimes even...) The use of equipment as tools was pretty cool... Edit: OMG, how could I miss that? Lagoon is one of my favorite SNES games! MOST. UNDERRATED. GAME. EVER. ![]() Possible spoilers: highlight to view You have no idea how long we tried to kill that damned bird at the end. Both of my parents gave it a shot, none of us could ever kill it. Lagoon also has one of the toughest to find OSTs in existence.
I think I trolled Yahoo.co.jp auction pages for the better part of two years before finding it. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

It's a poorly-designed and constructed Zelda clone with unbalanced difficulty, poor visuals, and (at least IMO) poor audio. I rented the game once and I think I kept dying on the same bird boss you did (big white bird in outer space, right?), but didn't have the heart to finish it. I really don't understand your tastes, SL, as I can't understand anyone thinking that Lagoon is a better game than Earthbound (which you don't like, IIRC). Those differing tastes are probably situational/coincidental on both of our parts', but meh. And now, back on topic, I think FF MQ isn't quite as bad as most people say it is, but it's not good enough to merit playing more than once. It has some pretty nifty dungeon designs at times (I'm a huge fan of that ice pyramid in the second area) and the dungeon navigation mechanics, with using all of your weapons and whatnot, was decently well-executed. The battle theme is damn catchy, I have to say. -------------------- |

I own the game, I actually bought it a couples months ago but I have yet to play it like most everything I own. I might give it a spin if I find out where I put it.

I have ROM of it, and have been playing it off and on. I'm about to enter the Ice Cave that looks like Lavos with Pheobe.

I remember playing MQ many many years ago and thought that the game was just too easy......with the exception of one of the puzzles, which at the time was hard to figure out....I was 9 mind you

I don't hate Mystic Quest at all; in fact, I like it. Some of the dungeon puzzles were really fun, and I liked all the characters, especially Tristam. Of course, it is really easy, but that's my only real complaint for it.

Ya know I still have most of the SNES games on Cartridges...amazingly. I am a gigantic pack rat, so I still have a lot of other stuff too, like the original manuals and even boxes...anyway, back to the point.
Mystic Quest was an awesome game IMO, but some things were troubling, like the lack of random battles, the spell system, and the whole palette swapped enemies( that still happens in games today mind you) But the place I hated most...the Ice Cave. My cart would constantly freeze (pardon the pun) in that place and I would have to try to get through it quick enough to fool the game. Man what pain. -------------------- This is a webcomic and gaming blog where I rant about nonsense. Enjoy. I was a soldier, now I just play one in video games. |

Mystic Quest was mediocre. What I was really surprised was that in the Japanese front cover of the Super Famicom box, the chibi knight holding his sword to make a diagonal line for the "Q" had Butz's hairdo on him.
As far as the game went, I haven't beaten it yet. It's actually quite nice and Benjamin was kinda cool with his weapons and stuff. The downside was that the game was super easy even if there weren't many items or spells to collect and that the battlesystem degraded into Turn-Based instead of moving on with ATB. Well, for a TB, it's alright. I prefer having my guest characters in AI mode because AI plays alot smarter and they seem to time their selections well. I mean, at first, your character is fine, and the guest is fine aswell.. But once all of the turns of your guys are finished being chosen to act, the AI can sometimes "change" their patterns automatically without having to use another turn for that. Kinda interesting. Music was beautiful. I loved the Fire town theme song (can't remember ![]() Overall it's ok. I still like playing it once-in-a-while, but I usually play more of FF4, FF5, and FF6, so there's not much free time for MQ, sadly :/ |
