Famitsu Magazine, reputed to be the #1 gaming review magazine in Japan has recently reviewed and ranked Final Fantasy XII giving it a perfect score across the board, which apparently is a rare thing, when you consider that with this game included, they've only ever given 6 games a perfect 40 points.
The game looks, appears, and sounds better and better with every morsel of it I hear. "Looks" is a lot different from "is," in my book. I thought FFX looked good the first time I saw it, and it wasn't that great when I finally played it compared to other FFs. But I have to play FFXII before I can say anything conclusive about it. So far, yes, it does look good, and being in Ivalice does help a lot. -CSM

Out of interest, what were the marking categories? (eg Graphics, Gameplay etc.)

They have four reviewers who give an overall score 1-10, then the score is added up for total score which is then considered the total score. So 10+10+10+10=40 They all gave it a ten, thus a perfect score.

pretty tight. i cant wait to get my hands on this game. it may not live up to other FFs, but im sure it will be an awesome game in itself. im assuming these guys are pro gamers, so 10s across the board is pretty damn impressive. just gotta wait it out!

Sorry, but I'll belive it and start to think this game will be good when Square-Enix pass me the same bundle of notes they gave this magazine.
What are the facts? The All in all, it'll take more than four guys in a magazine office in Japan to convince me this isn't a catastrophe on a DVD. It's looking more and more like FF8 Redux. The sky isn't falling, it's shells with nerve gas. The only games that Famitsu has ever given perfect scores are Soul Calibur, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Vagrant Story, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and Nintendogs. That's not a bad list to be a part of, even if I'd only consider two of those games for tens. They gave Kingdom Hearts 2 a 39, and that game is supposed to be incredible. Whatever, stats indicate that this is one good game, however much Del seems to be determined to hate it from the get-go.

I wouldn't be as pessimistic as Del_S about this, and I happen not to mind cliche plot if it's used effectively. However, just the idea of four people giving it a perfect 10 each doesn't sell the game any better for me. For what I know, they could have tastes quite different from mine, especially in terms of opinions on what game quality is represented by.
It's definitely something to look forward to, but I wouldn't be too optimistic about it either. Not to mention that I don't even know what system it's coming out for, and regardless of which that be, I won't have it anyway. Meh, whatever. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! Interesting. But I would need to know what they actually said about this game before I get to excited.

Yeah, and besides... Famitsu's freakin' WEIRD. I mean, the only games they ever gave top scores were, what? Nintendogs? None of those games (save for MAYBE OoT) deserve a perfect score (especially from such supposedly "tough" reviewers), and it makes me wonder what kind of people review those games...
My feelings about the game have been a little better as of late (mostly because of the spectacular "Kiss me Goodbye" trailer), but it does seem a lot like FFVIII (obviously SOMEWHAT better, hence the score). But hey, the first two disks of FFVIII were enthralling, so if FFXII is a redux of THAT part of the game, then I'm all for it! Still, though... with a battle system that broken, I even think the greatest plot in the world could warrant a 40. -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

OK, whoah. Why are people comparing FF XII to FF VIII already? So there's a romance. Big deal. So there's an unusual battle system. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. You can say whatever you want about Famitsu's possibility of bribery and their unusual selection of perfect scores (I personally only would have given a 10 to Soul Calibur among those five games), but the bottom line is that they're a prominent video game mag and they gave FF XII a perfect score. To me, that score creates a slightly higher degree of optimism and hype for FF XII, although I'm not passing judgement on it yet.
And anyone trying to talk about its plot, shut the **** up. We don't know jack squat about the plot yet, save some piddly information akin to the blurb on the back of a DVD's box. You all even seem to be confusing what plot means! Quote (Dictionary.com) The pattern of events or main story in a narrative or drama. We don't know anything about the plot yet. We have some storyline information, but we haven't seen the game's plot. Storyline = details, Plot = execution. I'm not saying a word about the game's plot until I've played the game. And thirdly, the battle system. Yes, it has its critics, but it also has its proponents. It's far from traditional Final Fantasy, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun anymore. I own and have played the demo and I liked it, but again, I can't properly judge the battle system until I've really seen it in action. For what little of this game we know, some of you are really jumping to conclusions. I, for one, will wait, read all of the reviews, and listen to hearsay only from people that have actually played the damn game. -------------------- |

It's only the internet! It's a common mistake, using plot and storyline for the same meaning, and really, I should have said storyline to start with. But I did mean storyline, and frankly, the storyline is to me, a hint of how the plot will progress. If the storyline is so similar to be virtually the same as we have seen befoe, I expect little of the plot. Based on what I have thus far seen, this is a train wreck. It might be nice to people who don't want anything actually new, but that's no good for me. I'd settle for old tricks in new ways, but this looks like old tricks in old ways. I have not passed judgement, but the trial has gone very badly for the defendant. And really, I'm thinking it's rubbish precisely becuase I wanted new and intresting. Not the same old stuff, and stupid looking characters. I could be wrong, of course, and we'll need to see. But I'm not giving any ground while it looks so bad to me, and it's done little to convince me personally to deviate from this course. After what, a nigh-on four year development, I'd expect it to be pretty good. And I don't expect it to be anything better than average if it's lucky, and I expect another eight. Still, another eight means another shift... And maybe we'll see some real weapons. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Famitsu also gave Ocarina and Vagrant Story a 10, so I'm kind of skeptical on how esteemed their rating system is. Still, those perfect scores aren't given out like candy like some magazines, so I guess it adds a little anticipation for the big day. Man, I hope they don't mess up Ivalice. =/

I'm catching myself wondering/hoping we'll see some familiar places in the game. Nelveska Temple, or perhaps a dirty, forgotten lighthouse off the coast.....? -------------------- Join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people - and kill them. ~Pacifist Badge, 1978 |

I saw this bit about Famitsu's perfect score a few days ago, and I don't know what to think. The game seriously looks beautiful. However, I did play through part of the demo and I didn't like the battle system; I think if I got a bit more acquainted with it, though, I'd enjoy it a lot more. I didn't like Final Fantasy X very much at all my first time through - but it wasn't even till Guadosalam that I realized what the hell the sphere grid was for (I like to skip in-game tutorials). The second time I played through? I absolutely loved it. So I'm going to have to side with laszlow on this one; I'm not going to conclude anything till I buy the game and play through it. As a poor college student, however, I don't know how likely that will be.

ANyone lucky enough to know someone in Japan who has played the game? I'd love to know the storyline. I'll probably end up buying some CGI compilation CD of the cutscenes that usually end up on eBay because I just don't have the time to play RPGS
