First of all... this is probably a minor spoiler.
Anyhow, for those of you that paid attention to the game far more than I did, I'm curious. How old was Edgar and Sabin when their father died (of posion)? And how many years was that before the events of the game (WoB)? It brings me to wonder how long the Imperials had been planning to invade the Northern Continent. It is pretty much assumed that the Empire had killed off Edgar's father, isn't it? -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

I'd say they were about 10. As for their father being poisoned, I'd have to disagree.

The official source, in a stunning change of action, actually reveals this information: the Figaro brothers were seventeen years when their father was poisoned. As they're both 27 years old when the game begins, that means the Empire was active at least ten years ago.

Is the official source you're referring to the manual? =/ I had assumed that the poisoning of the King might have been spoiler worthy. It's been a long while since I played through that area of the game. However, you do point out that the Empire was active (at a minimum) ten years ago. Does that mean you buy into the theory that the Empire was the source of the poison? Edit: Grabbed a copy of the script of the game. Everything's easier now! Quote (Script of FF6) SABIN: This is NONSENSE!! Everyone's saying that the Empire poisoned Dad... And the only thing on your minds is "Who's going to be the next king?!" You're all pathetic! SABIN: No one cared when Mom passed away, either... MATRON: That's not... SABIN: You were as bad as any of 'em! EDGAR: SABIN... SABIN: Empire of murderers... They won't get away with this! Though whether an emotional teenager's grief (not to mention hearsay) should be taken at face-value is debatable. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

Hey guys the empire had been very very active twenty years before the game begins (minimum) did you remember the escene of Gestlah taking the baby Terra after he went to the Esper world and saw Maduin and Madonna... Then the Empire was alreasy active trying to conquer the world and getting for that purpouse hte power of Espers...

Actually, I feel it wasn't out for world domination then as such, it was simply starting on the road. To have Magitek, it needed magicite. From what it recovered then, it developed Magitek. From there, it reequipped it's armed forces. From there, it needed to perfect tactics. From there, it started. By the time all that's done, it's maybe five years before game when they can start directly projecting power. But it was certainly active. An assassination or something similar is a covert little trick used by people to remove a government in the region they don't like and replace it with one easier to deal with. The CIA did that quite often when there were socialist chaps in South America they didn't like. So it's plausable that Vector could have done it, but just as likely some other enemy of Figaro could have done it too. -------------------- "Only the dead have seen the end of their quotes being misattributed to Plato." -George Santayana "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here..." -Abraham Lincoln, prior to the discovery of Irony. |

Quote (Del S @ 17th March 2006 06:23) ... To have Magitek, it needed magicite.... Not quite. The rest of your speculation is sound, but that's not on the level. Magitek power is developed from continuously sapping the life of living espers captured over the years, most of them probably when Gestahl made the raid beyond the gate that brought Terra into his clutches. You might remember all of the test-tube espers in the Magitek factory while Terra is incapacitated (and how they discard Ifrit and Shiva, who are "spent") - Cid was amazed to discover that you can't unlock an esper's true power until they're Magicite, implying that pre-Ruin Magitek did not employ Magicite. Just thought I'd clear that up. -------------------- |

It seems odd that Cid never tried to dissect and esper - presumably turning them into magicite, accidentally, in the process. But what can you do? Maybe he drew a line there.

I also never understood why Cid was so shocked to see them turn into magacite and then he decided to end the war. Why the sudden change of heart? What makes that revelation a reason to side with the returners??

Quote I also never understood why Cid was so shocked to see them turn into magacite and then he decided to end the war. Why the sudden change of heart? What makes that revelation a reason to side with the returners?? I think this was because even though he did do the work for the empire around this, he held in his anguish and pain towards it until there was some way to expel it, in this case, the returners. He was creating a sort of cover up for himself that way he wouldnt get executed for siding with rebellion SCUM!!! As for edgars father, he was shown as poisoned by the empire by the returners when sabin and edgar were young, as revealed in an earlier post...hehe -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. But there has to be more to it than that. I really never understood this part of the story. Like why was everyone shocked when they find out you can turn espers into magacite. Cid suddenly decides the war should end because of this??
Also, why was Ramuh so upset when he says Ghestal's methods are incorrect and that the only way extract all the powers of an esper was to turn him into magacite?? He should have been thrilled that Gestahl still didnt find out how to do this!! -------------------- I'VE HAD AN ETERNITY TO PONDER THE MEANING OF THINGS. AND NOW I HAVE AN ANSWER... |

Also worth note:
It would have been interesting if there was at least one esper that wasn't a pure good guy; willing to sell out the rest for more power with the Empire. In a theoretical subplot, you could fight him at some point as he defends Vector (maybe when you free the others) and then have a rare non-consenting piece of magicite. Which could well sell you out at some later point, or even be the spy sent along with you to Thamasa. -------------------- I hear the jury's still out on...science.
