So it turns out the Japanese Final Fantasy VI commercial is absolutely messed up (in the "this is weird" sense.) Go figure. What else would we expect from Japan? biggrin.gif

Man, where have the cool and creative videogame commercials of yore gone off to? Now all's we get are in-game shots, often just pre-rendered junk, and some narrator saying stuff to the ends of "In a land torn apart by chaos, only one hero can save the kingdom. Tetris RPG - coming summer 2006 on Nintendo DS." Lame. :/

That was an awesome comercial!

Why can't we have advertising like that in the US?

i see they used the ol' ostrach-on-the-beach-to-a-chocobo-theme-with-some-weird-man-giggling-in-the-background ploy. Man if i had a quarter for everytime I saw that... I would have 25 cents.

Wow it must have took them like 1 minute to shoot the comercial.
And 1 minute for the idea....

Now now, there's a lot of work put into this one commercial. They had to hire a team of Oddologists (scientists working in the field of Oddness) to compose a mixture of ALMOST entirely but not quite unrelated elements. We have...

- An ostridge running 'cross a beach.
- The Chocobo theme.
- An old man laughing hysterically.

The elements ARE tied together quite carefully, even though it may not seem apparent at first, all through the ostridge. The ostridge is somewhat like a chocobo, which ties it in with the music. And Japan has beaches, but no ostridges - obviously these two conditions cannot coexist without human intervention. And only a madman would take an ostridge out for a stroll on a beach, hence the laughter.

The commercial is an attention-grabbing masterpiece combining, at the time, the most refined elements of oddness. I give it a well above-average 7 / 10!

eh.gif ...That's messed up. I'll never watch a video game commercial from Japan again.

That was the stupidest thing I have ever seen and funny as hellat the same time! The Japanese LttP commercial is preaty lame though....but so was the first zelda commercial now that I think about it. If I'd have seen that at my current age at the time, I would have avoided the game all together.

Yeah...It's lame to see to geeks rap'n about an NES game tongue.gif

While it's humorous, it appeals in only one way, and that's why I hate it.

One might say they're encouraging a "cult status" for their videogames, and by inference, to videogames in general.

You'd only get it if you're:

1. Familiar with the chocobo theme.

You'd only enjoy it as a commercial if you:

2. Already know the game series. If you don't, seriously, what the heck would you think about this commercial? Square might be able to attract a handful of new people who are curious enough to find out what FFIV is after seeing that commercial, but then not all of them might actually be interested in FFIV.

So, basically, all the commercial serves as is an announcement. "HEY YO! FFIV'S COMING OUT!" That's just about it, along with a cheesy joke that only people already familiar with the FF series (and for people who don't pay that much attention to the music, FFIV in particular) will get.

That's NO way to increase one's fanbase.

I personally hate cheesiness in videogame commercials. Of course, I don't like cheesiness in some other commercials, but it does add humor to watching television. However, (1) cheesy game commercials generally aren't that funny (and in some cases, are slightly painful*), and (2) they don't get the point of the game across. I liked it when they actually said what the game would be about--something that you find online game ads doing these days, interestingly.

Good commercials I've seen include the following:
Super Castlevania IV ad (for merchants, not players directly, I believe; also, it's a beta version that's on display)
Wild ARMs 4 (an absolutely gorgeous theme song coordinated with FMV parts and in-game sequences plus text about the plot)
Super Metroid (Japanese commercial; see it here: http://www.samus.co.uk/super_metroid/tv_ads.shtml )
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: the first two FMVs. I know they're not commercials, but they might as well be.

Bad commercials I've seen include the following:

* FFTA U.S. TV ad. (Remember the asterisk up above? This was the "slightly painful" one.)
Super Metroid (US commercial; see it here: http://www.samus.co.uk/super_metroid/tv_ads.shtml )

Love the commercial.

The rest of the Japan ones are just out there. The LttP looks like a Michael Jackson video.

I'm just disappointed I couldn't find the FFVI one with the chain-smoking Mog doing monster auditions for the game someone mentioned elsewhere.
