Did anyone watch the Oscars? How did you think about the winners. I only saw the 1st half hour of it.

Jon Stewart did a good job. The rest of the show pretty much sucked (I hold a slight bias though, I'm a Jon Stewart fan and I only watched the first half myself)

Best line of the night:
"For all of you playing along at home, the Oscar count is: Three-Six-Mafia - 1 Martin Scorsese - 0" I was surprised. I really thought Brokeback would win, not because of the actual movie, but just because of the subject matter. I don't see why everyone is hating on Crash so much though. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

You know, four and a half weeks ago I almost posted my four page Oscars prediction list, but I decided that not enough people were interested. On my predictions I did get five out of six on the big six, and I won my bet with my friend Leon about Park vs. Miyazaki, so I'm happy.
I'm a huge Jon Stewart fan, but he didn't do a good job at all. His opening lines early on were terrible and his overall commentary had its moments but wasn't that great overall. That deadpan style and delivery works beautifully in The Daily Show but he's probably the worst Oscar host we've had since David Letterman four or five years ago. Bring back Martin and Rock! Stewart's best moments were the ad-libbed 3 6 Mafia lines ("I think it just got a little easier to be a pimp"), the Stephen Colbert "commercials", and the gay cowboys montage. And by the way, there were WAY TOO MANY ****ING MONTAGES this year. The best moment of the whole show was Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep's presentation dialogue for the guy that won the lifetime achievement award - I was amazed that they were pulling it off so well, and I didn't even find out until later that their style was a tribute to the winner. I was also really happy to see Nick Park win for Wallace and Gromit (the bow ties actually worked, unlike the stuffed penguins). That makes four shorts, two films, and four Oscars out of five nominations for Park, and with two of those shorts competing against each other the same year. That's an insane track record. Overall, no huge surprises other than maybe Crash's winning Best Picture, when it was generally considered to be the third-most likely contender. Crash was my favorite movie this year, so I'm happy. My only real huge disappointment was that Kung Fu Hustle wasn't nominated for Best Foreign Film. I missed a good portion of it, but at least I was there to witness the scorsese line. That was classic.
I left after best director, because I just assumed it was going to be BM that would take best picture and my favorite Fosters episode was on. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was Crash, which I'd heard wasn't all that good. -------------------- |
