Seriously, do you even bother to put your characters in the back or front (when characters are on the back, they recieve half physicle damage, but they do half physical damage to oppenents) in FFVI??? When I play FFVI and FFVII, i don't give specific ability to certain characters. Everyone is arch-mage. All my character use physical and magic attack (well, except gau and umaro....and Gogo), but i never bothered with putting specific character in back...just all of them on Front, so what about you?

For me...it just really depends on the character. In FF4 (yes, I know that it automatically goes front, back, etc.), I always made it a point to put Rydia and the twins in a spot where they'd be in the back.
But, you're right. For 6, I don't care. They're all in the same row. Bah, it just depends on the game then, I guess. The characters in 4 had more obvious weaknesses. -------------------- Why don't you go hang out with the village idiot so you have someone to look up to? |

I always put my magic users or weak characters (i.e. Relm and Strago) in the back, or Locke when he gets a weapon that has the same effect from the back row.

It's not much of a bother. It takes practically no time at all compared to espers and equipping etc. so why not? Also, unless you just want to be stupid, no one's going to just put their characters in random spots. The magic guys go in the back, attackers in front. The only exception is when they (attackers) have long range, which = Â

Keeping in mind that this is the FF6 forum, I chose front. Â The only times I use the back row is when someone has a weapon like the Flail or the Hawk Eye, but once you get into the WoR, those weapons aren't as effective as some that you can get really early on. Sure, you can get things like the Wing Edge, but since I don't like Locke all that much, I don't bother. I don't even bother putting Strago or Relm in the back row because I usually beef up their physical strength and stamina (which leads to higher HP) with espers.

For me, it just depends on the charecter. Some I put in the back for defensive reasons, and some I put in the front.

Since the Esper system of Final Fantasy VI allows even frontline fighters to gain magical prowess, the usefulness of the Front and Back Rows is greatly diminished. I never really use the settings, as opposed to other Final Fantasies, where magically powerful but physically frail characters were put in the back for optimum performance.
The only time I remember using it is when I used Strago. Just have him hunker down in the Back Row while throwing Grand Train after Grand Train at your opponents, and he becomes quite handy as a medium attack spellcaster during Kefka's Tower. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. The only time I used the back row was with Locke... it's one of his best attributes, the Wing Edge, besides being a great weapon, does the same damage from the back as from the front. Same damage done, half damage to Locke. Woo.

It all out depends on the character, you'd be a fool to put everyone in the, let's say, back. Your attack is reduced! If you put all in the front, your defenses are reduced! I usually put my two main magic users in the back, even if they attack, and the two people who can hit the hardest in the front. That way my healers won't take damage and can heal the big brute forced ninnies.

Mind you that placing someone in the back who doesn't actually cast spells most of the time is probably at a disadvantage, seeing as enemy spells won't be reduced.
I'm less diligant about position in FF6 than in other FF games, so they usually all just take the front unless I designate a mage or have a long range weapon. Â In FF4 it was a no brainer on positioning, it forced you, you made the best out of it. Â The only real big question was if Kain should be in the back or front, that is, a 2-3 or 3-2 party at end game, as jump isn't affected. Â His defense, however, is just so high that he's a better team player in the front. In FF5, it's basic class- mages in the back, fighters in the front. Â Little question there. In FF6, again, I just designated everyone as an attacker using magic, almost always. Â I'd use Terra and Celes over more pure mages like Relm and Strago, for example. Â In FF7, I played them all as clones at first. Â Then I started to switch things up and make them more individual. Â Cloud would usually only have 1-2 magic materia, one of which was always restore, so his attack wouldn't be affected. Â Then I'd put someone on flank like Tifa or Yuffie with mostly yellow materia aiming to be as fast as possible. Â Then I'd throw Vincent or Aeris in the back and weigh them down with magic materia, and possibly a summon or two. Â I'd throw long range onto Aeris, in case I wanted her to attack, and she would do more damage than she is generally credited- though her spell casting then became awesome. Â Then later, I'd give Vincent sometime like added effect Odin so even low damage could kill. Â Generally, point, flank, rear. In FF9, classes again, so mages in back, fighters in front. Â The more hybrid like Amarant and Freya would be in the front, as well as Quina. Personally, I prefer the 5 character party of FF4 the best. Â You can actually put the main character on point, put a couple in the back row, and then have two characters on the flanks. Â The more you have, the less likely each is to be godly powerful, and the more likely for characters to get knocked out. Â It's also just more interesting than a 3 character party, and again, I like to be able to put a strong character in front in a 4 character, so if you require 4, I like diamond shaped parties. |

Front. I chose this way because I think it's a fair tradeoff to deal more damage and take more damage, because not all enemies know Curing spells, All of my characters do (well after I get Kirin) and for magic users, They'll live, and if they don't I have a nice supply of Phoenix Downs and life spells (Well I dont have life in the beginning but I do have Phoenix downs)

Front, unless of course if any characters have a long-range weapon, or if I'm tired of seeing Relm getting wasted all the bloomin' time.

Front that made back attacks less devastating. Plus the only ranged weapons I ever used were Shadows shuirkens.

I used it only very rarely, like when you're lost trying to get out of a cave, and all you have left if Gogo with 10hp.

I guess it really depends...
I know the game better than anyone probably in my state. For bosses that only use magic attacks (ie the drill in the cave) why not keep them in front. But for things like the octupus you have to keep them in back or else the tenticles will kill everyone before banon can health them. -------------------- "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax-- Of cabbages--and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot-- And whether pigs have wings." |

I prefer to put certain characters in the back row: Strago, Relm, Banon and Setzer (and Setzer can be great in the back row 'cause his Fixed Dice do the same damage in back row)

Front or Back? What?
Seriously...i mainly keep everyone in the front. I'm a meat head in RPGs, so I want as much physical damage as possible, the only exceptions would be when someone has a long ranged weapon. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M.
