I wince just writing this, but there has been some heavy speculation that Sony will soar to new heights with a $499 pricetag on its Playstation 3.
Sony has been pretty quiet on the topic, stating only that "it will be expensive" and not even directing that comment to the general public, but given what we know about the technology Sony intends to include and how much that technology costs, the previous assumption of something around the 360's $399 seems naive. For instance, Sony has been widely touting BluRay DVD technology, and will obviously be using it to read discs. A recently debuted BluRay DVD player was priced at $1,800. Are they doing us just to scare us, so the $399 that they've been intending all along seems like a real bargain compared to the numbers we've been imagining? I guess they'll have to tell us sooner or later. Source: cnn.com -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Owch, that's nealrly three hundred quid, and that's before we factor in the fact UK prices are higher. PS2's cost around £82 in the US and £105-ish in the UK, so us UK gamers may be staring at up to a £320 price tag. Or, nearer $600.
Will they accept a kidney? Or a whole hobo? actually, ive read in PSM that they plan to keep the price tag between 200 and 300 dollars in an article created to quench the rumors flying about describing the psp.
One of the rumor quenches is, indeed, the price tag. Another one asked about the "batarang" controller (sorry if this part belongs in a different post), but the size of the controller is the same size of a standard PlayStation controller -------------------- Neneko is Neneko because Neneko couldn't be Neneko if Neneko wasn't Neneko! --as quoted from Neneko, Mahoraba {Heartful Days} I can stab a man with a thick paperback book thru the ribcage. |

Well, I told myself a long time ago that I will always be one step behind the current gaming generation, because quite frankly gaming companies launch their new consoles at way too expensive price. If I buy any new console it will definately be the REVO. I plan on buying a SlimPS2 and start my PS2 game hunt.
When the PSquatro is released, MAYBE then I will buy a PS3, and when the ?Xbox900? is released, then I will buy a 360 -------------------- PS3 tag: TipoDLuffy "...quite possibly the greatest game ever made" |

If you could provide a reference for this claim (like newsposters have to), that would really facilitate the discussion. We don't know whether your information is exactly how you remember it, or if it predates the information used for this article, or if this is PSM's wishful thinking as opposed to a press release from Sony. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

My PSX is doing pretty bad lately, so I was considering getting a PS2. I may just wait until the PS3 comes out. For a reference point, anyone know what the price drop for the XBox was after 360 came out, and how available they were?

Quote (Dark Paladin @ 13th February 2006 10:29) My PSX is doing pretty bad lately, so I was considering getting a PS2. I may just wait until the PS3 comes out. For a reference point, anyone know what the price drop for the XBox was after 360 came out, and how available they were? Funny you should ask. Microsoft didn't decrease the price for the XBox at any time following the release of the 360 - rather, they've increased the price. Any new XBoxes that Microsoft ships out are now auto-bundled with Forza Motorsport and cost $170 dollars. Granted, before the release of the 360 buying those two elements seperately would cost around $180 - $190 or so, but the fact that the XBox hasn't seen a true price drop is a little disappointing for people hoping to take advantage of such a drop. However, you can still probably find old XBox systems that were shipped new before the 360's release at $150. If you buy one used or refurbished it's probably lower. However, Microsoft is sort of going against the grain with this. It is pretty much common knowledge that an older system will depreciate in price upon the release of the newer system, as you assumed when you asked your question. It's hard to make an estimate, but I'm willing to bet money that you'll be able to buy a slimline model PS2 for less than $120 within nine months following the release of the PS3. -------------------- |
