Hello, all.
Seeing as this is a Square-Enix sextion, I wanted to see if there are any fellow Dragon Warrior/Quest people here. I always liked DW/Q over FF, and I myself enjoyed the first 3, the Erdrick/Loto series if you will. Which ones have you liked? And with Dragon Quest 8 comming over here soon, I am really excited of this, plus the rumor of the Slime costroller comming this way soon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -------------------- Fighter: I like swords! Quote plus the rumor of the Slime costroller comming this way soon. Say what? Dragon Warrior IV rocked IMO. I have to agree that they were the better NES series. But FF reigned supreme on the SNES. That's a pretty obvious statement. -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

DWIV was my absolute favourite of the series (what's with my with favourites being IV all the time?). I loved the multi-act story of it and you better believe that the 'hero' of the game was a heroine named Kame. ![]() (If you guys weren't aware, you get to not only choose the name of your hero, but also the gender) Of the acts, I think my favourite one was with Princess Alena. I've only played V and VI. V was a giant cliche, but that was okay seeing as it invented some of them... ^^`` I think it was fun, sad that the remake on the PS2 was never released here though...
VI I've still gotta' play more of. I have so many SNES ROMs (Yes ROMs, they're of games that never made it here so there's no other way of playin' 'em) to go through, and VI is such a big one chances are I'll be putting it off for a while. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I've played DW since DW1. I love the series, even more than FF for the most part.
DWVII was incredible. Simply incredible. 150 hours of pure bliss. I've played I and II and emulated V, and I have to say I prefer FF games for the most part (FF Ij is about on par with I and II and FF IV and VI basically own DQV). I'll probably emulate some of the others sometime in the future, and I might check out VIII when it comes out next year, as I love Level-5 games to death (I adore their visual style and Dark Cloud 2 is basically a heaping mass of awesome).

The only Dragon Quest game I've played were DW1, and DQ5. I gotta say, I like V. I'll see IV when I get the chance.. But I think V is enough for me.. Since older games are more annoying than newer ones because of the whole random battle chance.

I played about 2 hours into Dragon Quest V and didn't find it too enjoyable. It was a decent enough game, but not too different from anything else I was playing at the time. Of course, not many RPGs take off during the first two hours, and this was about a year and a half ago. I'm planning on giving DQIV a try, and I'll edit this when I do. I am looking forward, however, to... I think it's DQVIII? The new one on PS2, anyway.

I've been a big fan of DW since it's first installment. I'm pretty sure I got mine free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. The gameplay has always been pretty deep, and with the exception of DWII, I've found them all to be enjoyable. DWIII has to be my personal favorite, with IV and VII following close behind. I am really looking forward to VIII, and am expecting big things from it.

The first Dragon Warrior was my first RPG. It's what got me into Final Fantasy ialways liked the first one he best, probably because it was the first one that I played although the fourth one was one of my favorites also. And by the way, the slime controller isn't a rumor. You get it for reserving Dragon Quest VIII (when the game releases).

Okay... I've done quite a bit of research on DQ thanks to my recent obsession with DQ VIII.
I, II, III, and IV are all NES games, and all four made it to the US in reasonable quantities. The first three are somewhat interconnected (I and II are direct sequels, III is a mostly unrelated prequel) and are collectively called "The Erdrick Saga" or "The Loto Saga", Erdrick being the US name and Loto (or Roto) being the Japanese name. I, II, and III have all been remade to the Game Boy Color and SNES, and the US received the GBC ports (they're kind of hard to find, however) but not the SNES ports. IV also had a PS1 remake, but it was also Japan-only IV, V, and VI are collectively called "The Zenithian Saga" and are obviously interrelated, but it's difficult to tell exactly which order they occur in. IV was released in both Japan and the US on the NES, but V and VI, both SNES games, were never released in the US. However, you can find translation patches to both V and VI fairly easily from DeJap and NoProgress. V was remade into 3D for the PS2, but the graphics aren't nearly at VIII's level and the remake was, of course, Japan-only. VII was released in 2000 for the PS1, and VIII was released last week for the PS2. I don't think there is any relationship between the two games like in previous "DQ trilogies," but I'm not very far into VIII yet. VII is a hardcore RPG with few modern elements (its graphics aren't that much better than DQ VI's) and had reasonable critical acclaim (I haven't played it), while DQ VIII is has had rather extreme critical acclaim and is also the only 3D game in the entire series, not counting the PS2 remake of V. There are also a number of spinoffs of the DQ series, including a Pokemon-esque Monsters series, the Slime MoriMori series featuring a Blue Slime saving a bunch of other Slimes from other cutesy montsers, and the Torneko series, which is a series of RPGs starring Taloon from DQ IV (Torneko is Taloon's Japanese name). We've gotten two of the GBC games in the DQ Monsters series but none of the other spinoffs. So yeah, here are some miscillaneous DQ facts: DQ III, VI, and VII use class changing systems similar to FF V. DQ IV is the only game that uses a chapter system (unlcess you count the three time periods of DQ V to be chapters) and is also the first game to use a "tactics" system of AI for non-Hero characters. It was also the first game to use the famous Wagon. DQ V is the only game to feature a romance for The Hero, the only game where you can name more than one unique character, and was also the first game in the series to feature a casino and the first to feature catchable and recruitable monsters. So in conclusion, the US has gotten I-IV, VII, and VIII, the GBC remakes of I-III, and the first two games in the DW Monsters series. Keep in mind that I have only played I-V and VIII thus far, so I don't have much of an opinion on VI and VII. -------------------- |

I'm a BIG fan of the DQ series. I should say, atleast, DQ 1-6. When I had my PS2, I had DQVII. To me (5 years ago) it was about as much fun as passing a Kidney stone. However.... I do think if I WAS to go back, I would enjoy it more. It KILLS me that I don't have my PS2 anymore to try DQVIII (It was sold off while I was unemployed to help pay for Rent/Food....

my favorite was the third one (of the ones ive played. ) i do like how the games are separtated by sagas, (as someone above was talking about.) i also liked how the third one was a prequel to the first two.
DQ games are addicting after awhile... like when i played the gbc 1+2 for 3 days...(i was on a road trip, so...) although....the characters from DQ VIII are just copies of Dragonball characters....(Trunks, Gohan, and Videl...) not that i dont like toriyamas art style, its just....you can totally tell what character they are in DB...although this is only a nag on my part. also...some of the DQ games are very hard. nothing leveling up cant fix, but if you dont level up, and run away all the time, the games are impossible. (but most rpg players should fight and level up anyway, so...) but yeah, im a moderate DQ fan. -------------------- |

I had never played a DW game before (except about 6 minutes of a really old one) until we got VIII. I love it, it's great. I'm still iffy about the whole only-saving-and-ressurecting-at-a-church bit, but I love it.

No, something about writing down your adventures in the log, and may the Goddess bless you, etc.
And you have to pay increasingly more to revive characters. Eek. I'm too used to FF. A character dies? Use a Phoenix Down! Even if you're far from town. But DW does have those things that transport you to the nearest town that you've been to, as long as you were outside. -------------------- I had an old signature. Now I've changed it. |

If VIII is anything like the previous games, there should be a World Tree in the game, in which you can take the item "Leaf of the World Tree" from, which will revive charecters, although you can only take one from the tree if you have none at the momment. I thought how it makes you pay more and more to revive charecters as a good way to do it. It encourages you not to let your charecters die, to keep your charecters heal up and such. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

Actually, in DWIII there was one person you could save at (in the entire game) who would let you save without telling you how much xp was needed to level up each character in the party. Actually IMO I liked the whole pay to revive (at least until you learn the Revive spell) because it teaches you not to just throw your characters like cannon fodder to the enemies. Maybe this is why I'm so conservative on items in a game... Then again, it is nice to have a "few" revival items. -------------------- Neneko is Neneko because Neneko couldn't be Neneko if Neneko wasn't Neneko! --as quoted from Neneko, Mahoraba {Heartful Days} I can stab a man with a thick paperback book thru the ribcage. |

I like I-IV, though I've only ever finished part I. Never bothered with the others. I did play a demo of VIII recently though... I didn't like it. I just don't like the art style in it - does nothing for me. But to be perfectly honest I'm sick to death of anime altogether. And sometimes I think maybe I'm just tired of things that are obviously Japanese (don't hate me! It's not a race thing). I'm currently mourning the loss of good Saturday morning cartoons. It's all anime! Poo...

This wasn't just a trendy change for the series, it was there from the get-go. For some reason, a different art was used for DWs I-IV when they came to the US. -------------------- kame, tortue, tortuga, schildkröte, tartaruga, turtle "Arthur Dent?" "Yes." "Arthur Philip Dent?" Dragon Quest VIII eats hours...so many hours...
I bought Dragon Quest VIII about three weeks ago. I've accomplished over one hundred hours of gameplay and am only level 44. It's an enjoyable game...but it ate so much time. Extra Comment: Most hated boss, Darksteel Dragon... -------------------- I believe in love...when it's convenient for me. |

Kame: Yeah, I know, but that's just another reason I prefer 1-4. I thought the NA artwork was prettier and more enticing. I looked up the japanese artwork online a while ago and was bored by it.
I also prefer the title of "Dragon Warrior" over "Dragon Quest." DW packs more of a punch whereas DQ just kind of splats and doesn't move after. This post has been edited by ultimage on 30th December 2005 04:00 -------------------- Quote Do you think we're forever? |

I recieved Dragon Quest VIII for Christmas from my loving parents.
Wow. I mean, WOWTASTIC to the umpeenth power. It's so mind-bogglingly addicting, the graphics are great (especially for the PS2), the music's very full and sweeping, the voice acting is above average, if a bit overdone at times, and most of all, there's just SO MUCH TO DO! Honestly, I never played any of the DQ games until about two months ago. I didn't really get into RPGs until the SNES (which is still rather early, me being born in '91 and all), and of course DQ5-6 weren't ever released stateside. I DID play DQ1 via an emulator, but that was really just because I wanted to get a taste for the series before I played #8. That's a great game, too. But man, I really wasn't expecting there to be so much to do in the game. I'm about 32 hours in. -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

I'm currently levelling up to fight the boss of the Dark Ruins. Man, that place has really good experience, especially if you have an awesome monster team. You just summon 'em, they pwn, and voila! 700 exp.

DQ8 is only the 3rd one of the series I have played. I played the first two but lost touch of it after a while but I was very very pleased with DQ8. Excellent game with an excellent storyline and characters. The only thing I was not pleased with was the ending:
