Question: why would someone be labeled a "thief" if he only steals minor things from monsters, and clothes from guards and merchants? He never really steals anything major
Possible spoilers: highlight to view with the possible exception of the Phoenix esper If anyone's a thief, it's Possible spoilers: highlight to view Shadow, because he was trying to steal something big (much money, iirc) in his earlier years. I think Locke's more of a Pickpocket. What do you all think? This post has been edited by Figaro on 2nd April 2004 03:32 -------------------- Wow. 1,000 posts. I think the game attempted to convey Locke as a treasure hunter who wasn't particular about his methods sometimes (or maybe all the time). Other than that he just seemed like a guy with quick hands and a guilty conscience.

Unless the merchants and green soldiers were carrying clothes in their pockets, I don't know how Locke is a pickpocket. He steals. I mean, most of the monsters in the game don't have pockets.

The thieves on there steal billions of dollars. THEY are thieves. Locke steals potions, antidotes, swords (shiny!), etc. Rather small-time, IMO. He also picks locks, rather than pockets. In this case, "Pickpocket" means "Small-time thief". Vote accordingly, please. -------------------- Wow. 1,000 posts. I miss you all now that I'm in boarding school! ;_; |

What Zephir said. It comes right out of Mr. Locke Cole's mouth (well, script)
Upon thinking about it, Locke isn't much like a pickpocket. Not because he doesn't tend to pick pockets in particular, but because pickpockets tend more so to steal money (he steals items and clothing) and to other high-value, low-usefulness items (he usually steals low-value, high-usefulness items). Also, note that his idea of "treasure" isn't stuff like gold, jewelry, etc. (contrast that with Baram and Clyde). "Treasure" to him is stuff like rare relics and the Phoenix magicite. So disregarding his protests of being called a thief, he is more of a thief. Although "thief" can apply to someone who steals virtually anything. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. He's a theif who hunts for treasure, however he plays the role of the latter more than that of the former. The Phoenix Esper is a good example of treasure hunting since the stone really belonged to no one and was hidden away in a cave. I think Locke only steals things from innocent people when he has to, though he has no problem stealing from evil forces. You can see throughout the game that he has somewhat of a caring heart, a guy who's not out to hurt people and cause grief. Therefore the treasure hunter label is a more appropriate one than the others seen in this thread.

Personally, I'd like to think of him as a treasure hunter, because if I don't he very well may rip my lungs out. Although the Phoenix magicite does belong to someone, sort of, just about everyone who hints at it calls it the Emperor's treasure. Talk to the painter in Maranda (?) and follow what he says.

Anyone is a thief if they steal something, no matter how big or small it is. He's a thief when he needs to be, but I see him more as the exploring caves looking for treasure. Treasure Hunter.

I first thought he's called a thief simply because he has the "steal" command when you have him. However, what do you think he does for a living before the game starts? Because people in the game call him a thief, I'd guess that he'd be frisking people of their cash...
However, I'm not saying that the "treasure hunter" stuff is crap. I probably believe that he does hunt for treasure..ie looking for ancient never-before-discovered stuff like the Phoenix esper. However, you can't make that a vocation. And since he probaby steals more than he hunts or treasure, people call him thief. The reason why he wants to be called a treasure hunter, I believe, stems frm the negative connotations of the word "thief". The first thing I think of when I hear that word is someone without honour and frisks from even the poorest, lowliest soul and thus can cause a great deal of suffering because he stole an 8-child mother's wages. To avoid such associations, he calls himself "treasure hunter"- a term that has more positive connotations. However, I don't believe that Locke although believed by people in the game to be a thief, would fit my definition. As aforementioned, he has a conscience. It is simply because of the society's negative perspective of the word thief that he wants to be referred to as otherwise. In other words, Locke is both, but more of a thief when he's living his own life, and more of a treasure hunter when you use him. -------------------- Student of CCS, Grandmaster of Alternative Literature and Musical Passionista at your service!!! |

You fools! Locke is a Rogue, obviously, as nothing else fully describes his complete range of abilities. For those of you who don't know what the heck I'm talking about, go to your true roots, and play Dungeons and Dragons (but I certainly hope everyone knows what I'm talking about).

Treasure Hunter. It seems to me that he maybe was a Thief in the past, but during the game he mainly fights to help Terra and the others. I get the impression that he would only steal from a person in combat (of course) or if he was starving. If stealing an item from a Behemoth to help in battle makes you a Thief then technically so does chopping off its arm.

it says hes a treasure hunter. WHen he took rachael out they were lookin for treasure. When she died...he had her preserved and searched for the bird that was turned to stone type treasure (pheonix)to revive her.

Locke is definatly a thief and a treasure hunter, but i agree with the idea that he stays away from the word thief because he really has a good heart and doesn't want to hurt people, and thief is a very negative term. I think he is more just someone with skills, think about what the Returners always have him do, go get Terra, and sneak her back to the hide out, go bust into South Figaro and get information. He is just good at getting in and out of places he is not supposed to be in, and find interesting stuff in the process.
