awww no Jet force Gemini???? Just kidding
Welcome to the forum! I picked doom just becuase it was the first game i ever played (werid first choice) oddly enough the name doom came from a bond movie, they chose that name beucase there was a scene where a guy pulls out a breif case and the other guy ask whats in it, The man with the breif case says Doom. So the creators thought it be cool if someone ask them whats in there and they could say doom. lol im not much for halo and time splinters was okayish so i picked doom -------------------- procastinate now, dont put it off |

This is a poll? With three options? In a genre with about twenty valid series? Nice thought, way off base.
For single player games, I still prefer tac-FPS like Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon. For multi, the UT series is stil the best. Take that, Kim boys. Edit TOTALLY forgot Deus Ex. I might try DX2 some time even though I know it sucks, but the original is a wonderful game. Thanks, Kairo, and Tiddles for introducing it to me in the first place. Nulled, because the only FPS I ever found that was truly enjoyable was Quake. I'm not much into shooters in general that much anyway though so whatever.

egads. Here I was under the impression that Half Life was almightily good. At least that's what I'm told...never played it...but doesn't it have some credit?

First of all, Jet Force Gemini, while being an awesome game, is a third-person shooter, not an FPS. My favorite FPS games are Perfect Dark, Halo, and the original Unreal Tournament.

Since I've never been a fan of first-person shooters, but I feel sympathetic to the protagonist creature in this one...
There's some flash game on Newgrounds which stars this Scizor/Ridley-looking creature who's supposed to defend his home planet against these strange-looking invading whatnots. I can't remember the name of the game (which is the name of this creature), and I can't seem to find it on Newgrounds either. Oh well. The gameplay of that thing is pretty bad, but whatever. I'll make that my choice. Edit Could someone who knows about this please tell me what it's called? Please? Pretty please? Edit Update: I decided to put some more effort into finding it, after discovering that NG didn't actually show ALL its games of of a certain category on that category's page. So I remembered that it had been a featured selection before, and there was a convenient button linking to 'featured selections archive'. Lo and behold.edit The game is named Seraph, and so is the protagonist. Now you can search on Newgrounds to your leisure, but here's the link anyways: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/226806 The game itself is nastily difficult. That and I'm playing on a touchpad for a mouse and I'm not used to left-hand controls for up/down/left/right. But I felt sorry for Seraph when the poor thing died...or maybe it's just the Dragon-God of the Darkness who is sympathetic to those who look like him and valiantly defend their homeland... Edit Edit again: No, it's not nastily difficult. It's reasonable. Except the final boss of the 'level' mode, which I can barely even hit. Doom is the OG of first person shooters, whlie as TimeSplitters is good and Halo's storyline and campaign mode suck but its multiplayer capabilities are the best.

I know what you're talking 'bout, GMH, but I don't remember the name either. I'd search for it, but my browser tends to go all wonky at Newgrounds.
Out of the "poll", my choice would be the Timesplitters series, but they're not remotely close to my favorite FPS's. My favorites would be Half Life, Wolfenstein 3D (the original, not the watered-down SNES port), and Goldeneye 007, in no particular order. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. The only first person shooters that I've ever really liked are:
1) Games in the arcade with actual guns 2) Wolfenstein 3D 3) Duck Hunt |

Doom is so overrated it's not funny.
Out of those three, Halo by far. Quote (Tidu-who @ 30th March 2005 07:06) Doom is so overrated it's not funny. Ditto Halo. Doom and Halo are good games certainly... but not that good. Anyway, to the poll: TimeSplitters. Best PS2 FPS as a whole, and better than Halo and Doom 3 , but it's a close one. For the thinking shooter, I go with SWAT3. having not played the newer rainbow games which I am certain surpass it. Playstation didn't have too many of those that I played so I won't go there. For frantic FPS, that'll be UT on the PC, and TimeSplitters FP for the PS/PS2. For single-player, Killzone was quite good on PS2, and naturally Half-Life (the original) is the PC choice. And overall... Final Doom was the first FPS I ever played, so I guess I may have a fondness for the old Dooms. But I'm afraid Future Perfect wins just now as overall best. Sure, it's lonely beign the only 'Splitters fan but it's got friggin' monkeys. NINJA monkeys. I see no chimps in Halo! I'm gonna vote 'other'.... because I can.
My vote is for 'Strife' (Yeah, that's right, it's an actual game) If you've played the game before, the reasons outta be obvious, if not, I suggest you go look for it ^-^ cause explaining why would take alot of time (Many good things) -------------------- Link: "What is it?" I thought half life 2 was meant to be the best fps in existance? I've hardly seen much of it. Isn't it as good as the hype said it would be?
Doom 3 was fun. But I don't scare easy. (I do get disturbed easy though, so I avoid most horror movies) Halo, great fun again, especially multiplayer. Haven't played the new timesplitters yet.. but hey, timesplitters rules. Can't really vote, they're all wicked fun. -------------------- 'Let that be a lesson to all oppressive vegetable sellers.' |

Among the few FPS games I've played I'd pick Medal of Honor Front Line, it was a very fast paced WWII shooter and some great music and dialogue. Also I played the demo for Area 51 and I must say I loved every bit of it, DUAL SHOTGUNS BABY!!!

Counter-Strike, the thinking man's FPS. Though you need good aim as much as any other FPS, you're as good as dead if you don't strategize as well.
And R51, how easy it is to praise an inferior FPS like UT when you haven't even so much as played Counter-Strike. I dare you to taste the glory of CSS, and I guarantee that you won't go back to that mindless, uncivilized exercise. If I wanted to strategise, I'd play Civilization or something. I wish die-hard Counter-Strike fans could accept that preferring visceral action over ponderous tactics doesn't necessarily mean you just need more ritalin. If it really counts as an FPS, my points go to Deus Ex (not to be confused with the inferior sequel Invisible War, which is certainly the Jemini of this Eurovision). Special love to both Half-Lifes and the original Doom for realising that atmosphere doesn't mean turning all the lights off, and to Doom in particular for having a proper soundtrack instead of the ambient nonsense that one usually expects from post-Quake FPSes. And it wouldn't be right not to mention Goldeneye and the fact that the N64 is still the only console to really have a gamepad well-suited to the genre, though Goldeneye's default config did misuse it IMO. Hopefully I'll get around to its spiritual successors, the Timesplitters games, at some point, but I just don't fancy the PS2 pad much for FPSage. Anyone know if they'll accept a USB keyboard and mouse? PS2 Deus Ex certainly did, although somewhat shakily IIRC. And yes, UT2004 and UT99 are my preferred multiplayer poison. CoN runs official UT2004 games; stop by chat if you're interested. Unofficially, I know a lot of people here play Counter-Strike: Source as well. |

CS good points nice big weapon list lots of actually playable maps, that dont over balance the game towards one side realistic re-load on sniper weapons CS bad points still uses a percentage health system- possible to shoot someone in the head an they keep coming No "real" weapons apart from the M4 (insidently modeled with a fixed carry handle in some versions thus NOT an M4) OMG U R TEH HAXXOR! when you get a lucky hit UT good points there are LOTS and LOTS of guns there are lots and lots of maps that are in fact mirrored down the midle for CTF therefore balanced anouncer UT bad points uses percentage health anouncer can get anoying Rainbow games good points real weapons(exept the name of the MP10 but dont get me started on that) realistic Bullets, ones that actually kill you when they tear through your trachea in a fountan of gore.. Ding Chavez Bad points frustrateing sniper rifles rainbow 6 3 could confuse you into searching for the other 62 titles i guess... the only way to solve this is to create a tuorny type thing 5 CSboys,5 UTlovers, 5 Rainbow nuts Do TDMs (thats 5 at a time- there can be more than 5 in the pool for each team) one home one away one nuetral against both other teams whoever wins most games has the best players therfore whichever game is best doesent matter. -------------------- Failure is not an option. its an art form |

I haven't been able to enjoy any other FPS since being a Descent addict a few years back. After getting used to 360x360 degree movement, anything less is too restricting. The Descent series is pretty much dead online nowadays but it once commanded a very loyal following on Kali, Zone and Heat. It never did achieve mainstream popularity, and my only guess as to why that was is because of the relatively complicated controls. Once you get it it's great.
I await the day when a new Descent-style FPS is created. -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! White Mage & Paladin |

There's hardly any choices apart from the major ones. You forgot 007, Perfect Dark, Counter-Strike, Medal of Honor, Brothers in Arms, Republic Commando, Rainbow 6, Ghost Recon, etc. The list is pretty short considering how many good FPS there are. But, anyways...

You know that if I thought you didn't have the brain for it, Tids, I wouldn't bother you so much about joining us. I forgot to mention my favorite single-player FPS, which is probably Half-Life 2. The action was intense, and the story was surprisingly well-crafted. The environments were fantastic as well, and I think the developers did a really good job of putting together the sci-fi feel of the game. I must admit the ending was a bit ambiguous and inconclusive for my tastes, though. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. All these posts and noone said Call of Duty (PC, cuz the console ones did suck)
Not enough choices, as R51 said. I prefer HL2, Halo(2), Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty (PC), and sometimes CS. This is off topic but I thoght it was pretty cool, and proves there IS a god: A VG store opened up in my county, where you can go and play games and trade some in and stuff like that. They've already done a Doom 3 tournament (didn't participate, never playd it), and now they are doing a Halo 2 tournament. I already signed up. System Shock 2.
You are in First-Person, and you can shoot things, so I'm picking it. Nyah.
