Mother creator Shigesato Itoi has revealed on his official news site that his much beloved RPG series is far from dead, contrary to some fan speculation. In fact, its third title, Mother 3, is expected to see a release on the Game Boy Advance this coming spring!

This news provides quite a surprise given how long Mother 3 has been in the making, as well as how long it's seemingly been cancelled. Fans no doubt remember the title as the series' formerly intended 3D debut, originally announced for the Nintendo 64 - a few years prior to the console's launch - as a follow-up to the largely successful Mother 2 (known as EarthBound in North America). Hopefully the third chapter will now see the light of day, although no official word concerning the game has yet been made by Nintendo.

Spring 2006 is likely the date reserved for the game's Japanese release - so far there's no mention of a North American or European date.

They had originally planned the title in 3D, seems rather odd that they'd put it on the Advance and not the DS. It would be even better, I think , were they to continue to update it graphically and put it on the Cube.

From what I understand, the Mother 3/EarthBound 64 (?) game they'd partially developed for the N64 was totally scrapped, meaning this one is a new game with li'l or no ties to the incomplete, cancelled one. I'm assuming that also means it won't be in 3D, or otherwise I'd also want them to hold out and put it on the DS or GameCube instead.

I do remember that the N64 game was to have a Western theme and an adult main character, but I don't believe either's the case now based on what both Nintendo and Itoi have said 'bout the series and a possible Mother 3 in recent years. Honestly, I'd like to see a different setting or timeframe than in the first two, but I hope they don't get carried away with the changes this time 'round like they almost threatened to before...

I wouldn't want it to be in 3D. It would ruin the whole "theme" of the series. And they wouldnt be able to have cool sprites and stuff. It would be cool if Apple and Orange Kid were the main characters.

It wouldn't have to be in 3D for me to like it but it would still be cool. I was really impressed by the Earthbound level in Super Smash Bros. Melee and would really like to see something similar created on the cube. But also, just getting another earthbound is good enough. It would be nice if they'd re-release the two previous Mother games on the GBA. I know I'd buy them.

Hopefully they will get it out this time. I recall seeing on the Net somewhere that Earthbound 64 was supposed to have a cowboy be the main character. Or something.
