I doesn't fit with FFVI's style at all. One of the characters appearantly has a handgun. The characters are all anime-ish looking (I like anime, but FFVI is not an anime). The character designs are very un-amano-ish (a small difference would be ok, but not such a huge difference). The characters names all sound like they came from some fanfic. The initial plot is weak and unrelated to the existing FFVI world (initial plot: "Magic suddenly returns along with hoards of evil monsters, military attacks girls home, kills father, she wants revenge.). Interestingly, they claim that they want to give it an old school look, yet they made everything all bright and cartoony. In my mind, old school FF is not bright and cartoony. The logo they made is really cool looking though.
But it's good that someone is making something like this. I beat the game again today and I was thinking about what happens afterwards. If I made a sequel though, I'd have it take place immidiatly after, and it would be about how evil forces are trying to take advantage of the situation. Since magic left everyones magic (maybe their magic enhanced stats too) would be returned to nothing, which would give an explaination of why everyone get's all weak all of a sudden at the begining of the game. Maybe humans start to develop natural magic (maybe after kefka died the magic was evenly distributed among all living things on earth or something) since the game needs magic in it. |

yeah, i agree its too cartoony, and right now the plot looks weak, but i dont know, maybe theresmore to it than what theyre saying. You know plots in almost all FF always start small. But like you said, im just glad somebody is doing something with the world of FFVI, if only square stopped milking FFVII and remembered this game a little more.
About youre idea of a sequel, i had a similar idea. The way i understood the end of the game, magic wasnt actually destroyed but rather used up to revive the world. The problem is, how do you come upwith a big bad thats actually bigger than a god like kefka, its really hard to top that in the menacing scale. |

I think it wouldn't have to be bigger than the story line of FFVI. I think the problem with sequels is that they always try to be bigger than the origonal, and they ussually aren't as good becuase of it.

I spent entirely too much time trying to make sense of the French site before noticing there was an 'English Site' option.
![]() There's no denying, however, that this looks incredible and while the plot foundation is somewhat cliche, it's obviously in it's early stages. It's clear that alot of work is going into this, the character designs look rather interesting and graphically it's pretty astonishing, but it's hard to make judgements when the key systems haven't been revealed yet - if the growth/battle system is just a replica of FF6's then I'm not so enthusiastic. All the same, I'll be keeping a highly anticipatory eye on this and crossing my fingers that it won't go the way of that CT demo. |

The graphics do look good, but I don't like their style.
I think it should use the same system, but tweaked so that some of the stats are actually worthwhile. I feel that sequels are extensions to the story and game, and becuase of that, they should be similar. If I was making the game (of course they are the ones with the dedication to make one, not me). The story would be different. - takes place 15 years after the first game. The reconstruction is nearing completion and the worlds political alliances are starting to reform. Considering the worlds new geography some new cities have been built, and some old ones have become abandoned or slums. (some new cities have been made for the new game, and some old ones are still there but are more like dungeons, like how zozo works). - Some places are trying to take over other places, form countries, secure land/resources. Figaro is trying to (and so far sucsessfully) maintain peace on the continents it can go to. I don't recall Figaro castle being damaged at all in the first game, so it still has alot of power. There is a new city around the colleseum, and a new port city inbetween the two continents. - The game starts with Maranda invading Jidoor, the first noteable disturbance in the world's peace. - You play as the quick fighter Fern Lessone (quicky name, just made up). His special ability is selecting multiple targets for the fight command using R and L (like with magic). His stats and developement are what you'd expect for a quick fighter. He is a Soldier for Maranda, under General Tourmaline (another quicky name), and you take part in a sting of battles attacking Jidoor with 3 other soldiers. Inbetween the fights Fern starts to realize that this is all a bad thing, and the starts to fight against the soldiers in your party. A few waves of soldiers come which you must fight, and then the first major battle is General Tournaline, who you defeat, but don't kill. You rescue a handfull of citizens and you all escape to South Figaro by boat. One of the citizens is suspicous, and looks like Locke with a costume on. -South Figaro is a rest and shopping place right now. Everyone in the city is all worked up about the attack on Jidoor. You travel to Figaro Castle to talk to the Kings, but so are alot of other people. You do get to talk to Edgar (you overhear that Sabin is reassuring other cities of their saftey) but he just gives you some money, and a special coin (the kind they give to heros for doing something special) like they where candy, and he kicks you out of the room without really listening to you. Behind you in line to talk to Edgar is that citizen who looks like Locke. As you're leaving the castle all of a sudden the soldiers start kicking everyone out, but you duck down into the old jail. You hear the Castle start to dive, stop, and then you see Edgar, Locke (who you don't know yet), and some soldiers go through the secret entrance to the Ancient Castle. Of course you follow them. You learn that Maranda has just wiped out South Figaro, and was headed towards the castle. Locke explains to Edgar that General Tourmaline read the same ancient scrolls about something vaguly resembling a second set of magical statues under the Ancient Castle (no one has unlocked it yet). You butt in and say something like "well I could have told you That. Edgar would have you killed but Locke says no. Edgar has Fern and Locke dropped off at the other continent to find and retrive Sabin and Celes (Celes and Locke had been living together as "mayors" of Kohlingen). -You find Sabin (who has two or 3 of his most usefully old blitz) in that new port city I mentioned before. Before you leave the city you end up fighting the reoccuring comedic relief boss (the role ultros had) for the first time. Fern, Locke, and Sabin all head to Kohlingen to pick up Celes, but when you get there you find that it is currently being invaded by the bad-ass warriors from the city around the Colloseum. Peace has collapsed! You fight off some warriors, and they retreat. half the city has been destroyed and Celes is nowhere to be found. Locke gets pissed and runs off (presumably to find Celes). You sit around for a bit too long and the warriors come back, you do some battles, and Fern somehow does a fire spell! But it's not enough, so you are forced to retreat by boat. You find your way to Moblitz, which has been rebuilt. Since Moblitz is so isolated, alot of people who just want to leave the world behind and live out the rest of their lives peacfully moved there. - Coincidentaly, Fern is one of the children from WoR Moblitz! You see Terra using a simple cure spell to heal some kid who scraped his knee. Fern and Terra have a bit of a reuinion, and through the discussion you found out that Fern was adopted (to him stolen) from Moblitz soon after Kefka was defeated. He has very fond memories of both places. Fern has his first thoughts about his friends and Family from Maranda, and wonders if they really believe in what Maranda is doing, and if they don't if they're safe. Fern also reunites with another childhood friend who also turned into a fighter! But I'm not going to take the time to invent a new character, so this new character will be NC she's a girl. Everyone decides they need to form a force to reinforce Figaro Castle to protect the statues. The party now splits up. Fern and NC are suppososed to go to Doma to get support from them. Sabin is supposed to get to the opera house where Setzer has built a casino. Terra is going to go to Thamasa to find out how her and Fern are able to use magic, becuase Thamasa is generally knowledgable about magic. - Sabin goes by foot, and travels down the serpent trench. The bridge to the next continent is blocked by an army base from Maranda! Oh no! they must have taken over that continent too. Luckily you find a cave (one of the ones you stopped by in the WoB) that goes under the bridge, but it's filled with monsters! Oh no! After getting through the cave you find some good citizens who help you get to Maranda. Once in Maranda you go to the Opera House and meet up with Setzer. - Terra gets to Thasma. Relm is now older. Strago got older too, and died. Relm is fathered by a quiet guy, who you'd guess was a reformed ninja if you didn't know better. The leader of the village has heard about what Maranda has been upto and wants to start a militia. When Terra shows up and explains who Fern is, he thinks she is against them and attacks with a few other paranoid followers. That's the boss battle for the side-quest (they cannot use magic anymore). After that some village elders explain that when Kefka was killed all the magic on the planet was evenly distributed across the planet, which included a little bit to each human. Terra and Fern are able to cultivate their little amount of magic becuase they're cool. Terra visits the grave of General Leo, and get's all reflective of the past and stuff. Then she practices her magic and she learns some magicr. - Fern and NC get to Doma which Cyan is rebuilding (with a bunch of new citizens). Cyan is getting to be old (forgot some skills too) but joins your party and organizes an assult team. Gau (who is also older) has been following Cyan around, but has since learned some english, became slightly civilized, and has forgotten all of his rages. Luckily you're right next to the veldt anyways. Fern manages to learn Bolt! Fern and NC start liking each other! You all head off to Nikeah (which has since been conquered by Maranda) with the assult force (who you don't control) and you reclaim Nikeah. You face General Tourmaline as a boss, and there is some drama there. him and some leftover forces manage to escape. - Everyone is picked up by the airship. They decide to check up on Figaro Castle. You have: Fern, NC, Sabin, Gau, Cyan, Terra, Relm, Setzer. Figaro Castle is pretty messed up! There are dead bodies and stuff, and it's pretty nasty, but it still works. You all go to the Ancient Castle. Once there, you divide into two groups and fight through the dungeon beneath the Ancient Castle. Once you get to the statues, you see Edgar fighting General Tourmaline. You play as edgar with all of his tools and you fight the general. You almost win, but he gets to the statues and absorbs some power, and Edgar looses. Then both of your parties fight the General at the same time. The General is pretty almighty now (not godlike or ultra powerful, but a very proficient magic user), but when you still win, he get's upset, busts a tunnel straight up, levetates the statues and flies away with them. Then he sends a big magical attack to collapse the cave, and you have to do one of those timed escape type things. Edgar joins your party, but since you're running away and he's wounded it doesn't matter. -This ends the first half of the game. There is a cinimatic where General Tourmaline orders a beautiful paradise type city built where Kefka's tower once stood. The General is starting to get a little on the crazy side. After the General conquered most of the civilized world, they thought of him as a hero, and as the true leader of Maranda' Empire. They don't seem to care about the actual emperor anymore. The General includes a bigger and better colloseum in the new city, and gives it to Owzer and the warriors. He see's it as extra protection on the streets. Anyone truly loyal to the Empire was supposed to move to the capitol. NC and Fern have some kind of a love scene. awwwww... Also, some more magic has been unleashed and now some items teach magic, but most of the magic is natural magic. - Back in the airship, the group ponders what to do. Moblitz' citizens are too peacefull to go to war, and Thamasa is too weak (they've relied on magic for generations) and becuase they refuse becuase it's in their mindset that they are isolated from the world and it doesn't matter to them. The only one willing to fight is that paranoid guy who attacked Terra. This is Ferns first chance to see his parents and friends and tell them he's ok and stuff, so while the rest of the group starts to organize for war (Narshe, Doma, and Nikeah), he goes to see them. NC secretly follows him. It turns out that they heard about the deflector, and everyone he once knew hates him and all that. His friends refuse to talk to him, but don't do anything. His mother is dissapointed, but still loves him, and his father hates him and he's the one who alerts the army about his presense. As they leave on a busy street the soldiers attack Fern as he's on his way out of town. you fight, and start to loose, but then NC shows up. Fern is pissed and embarrassed becuase she followed him and she new about his rejection. She ends up getting kidnapped, but Fern is able to escape. The street crowd is cheering and excited, and it shows how mindless everyone in the Maranda Empire is. - Now the player is free to do whatever in the 2nd half of the game. There are other characters to be found. Locke and Celes are on Solitary Island. Relms "dad" trains the paranoid guy from Thasma to be worthwhile, and becomes a new playable character. Mog and Umaro are still in the Caves of Narshe. Gogo is in Zozo. There are 1 or 2 more new characters. Each of the characters has some kind of side quest or activity to do. They learn that NC is with Tourmaline in the new capitol (where Kefka's tower was), and of course Fern is ultra pissed and wants to go save her. The rest of the group wants to save the planet from certain doom. - The group invades the capitol. You split up into two parties, and you fight through the city on seperate paths switching with Y. The rest of the characters also fight through the city, but you don't control or see them. You fight through citizens, colloseum warriors, soldiers, and strong soldiers. Once you get to the palace, you make one party who fights through the palace, and one who stays behind to fight off the people in the city who are trying to get into the palace to fight them. Fern insists through out that he needs to be in your party going into the city, and going into the palace The third team that you can't control meets up and helps the 2nd team at the door. NC has been brainwashed and given powerful magic by Tourmaline. The battle leads to the roof where crowds are watching and hearing. after you 'win' the battle Fern talks sense into NC, and she stops attacking. Tourmaline get's upset and shoots a powerful magical blast at Fern, but of course NC dives infront of Fern and takes the hit. She's not tottally dead, but she know she's going to die, so she gives her power to heal and give two levels to your party, but she is still not completely dead, but she'll hang on by a thread untill the end of the battle. Then you have the battle between your party and Tourmaline. There is some moving dialouge about life and what is right and wrong and stuff. As the citizens see what's happening some realize that it is all wrong, and they loose alligence to Tourmaline. Fighting errupts in the streets. Instead of loosing his ego, tourmaline get's exited at the chao's and destruction he's created, so we know he's really screwy. aaaaaaaaand you kill Tourmaline. - Locke is reminded of Rachel, Terra gets sad becuase she knew both of them really well. The rest of the characters get sad in general. NC says something cliche and dies, and Fern stands over her dead body all pissed and sad and brooding. He stands there for a while, and then notices in the streets someones girlfriend takes a sword for the boyfriend. He realizes that his tragic story might is happening all over the city, so he regains he sorta flips out and kills everyone in the streets who fighting, one by one, but the way the cinimatic goes it makes it look like he's doing a good thing. But then by accident he kills his mom who was fighting for good, and feels even worse. Ferns life SUCKS, but at least by now the crowd has realized that even fighting eac hother isn't all that great, sooooooo they stop. Some kind of resolution happens, and then the credits roll. So that's what I would do if I was making a sequel. ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, that sounds like it could be fun (hey, i read most of it, k).
Personally, in a sequel I would like some characters to perish. Gau can die. As can Setzer, Cyan, Strago... And for good measure throw in Terra as well. Her death would shake it up a little more and would have nice dramatic effect. ![]() |

There are other topics to discuss what you would do in your own sequel, or you could suggest things to the FLS folks. This topic is about this specific sequel.

Looks like another project that's never going to get finished.
The style does look different from FFVI, but would you really want a clone? It wouldn't be as good but a comparison would be inevitable. At least something with new characters and a new style can be evaluated on its own a little more. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

I thought the game was supposed to be taking place 100 years after the original....if so, why are Edgar, Locke, Celes, etc. still alive?

Quote Personally, in a sequel I would like some characters to perish. Gau can die. As can Setzer, Cyan, Strago... And for good measure throw in Terra as well. Her death would shake it up a little more and would have nice dramatic effect. I agree, but if you included some and not all, then everyone would say "but where's [insert favorite character]?" A plus for Shadow of Life is that it wouldn't have that problem. And if it was immediatly after, there wouldn't be any reason why most the characters wouldn't show up to fight the badness. There is supposed to be a working demo of Shadow of Life in early 2006, and it is supposed to be finished 2-3 years later. The project started in 99. If it gets finished in 2009 then it's a 10 year project. I feel sorry for the leaders of the project who have been trying to get it done since then. Whenever it comes out I'll be sure to play it though. Quote I thought the game was supposed to be taking place 100 years after the original....if so, why are Edgar, Locke, Celes, etc. still alive? The big post I made with all that in it was what I would do if I where making it, not what is actually being done. Shadow of Life is the one that takes place 100 years after, and it doesn't have any of the origonal characters in it. Quote There are other topics to discuss what you would do in your own sequel, or you could suggest things to the FLS folks. This topic is about this specific sequel. No offense, but considering how slow these forums are I really think you over moderate them. Read stuff at http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum103/, it would make CoN better. Geeze, I did alot of quoting in this post! ![]() |
