wimamp is a freeware media program like RealPlayer or Windows Media Player. If something is a winamp plugin, then installing the plugin allows Winamp to play a certain filetype. For example, you usually need to use winamp plugins to play ripped SMC or PSF files ripped from game hardware; I use the SAmp320 and Highly Experimental plugins to play those.

We all learn sometimes.
Go to http://www.winamp.com, and you'll see what it looks like. It's a program that plays music, like mp3s (an mp3 is a music file). Do you know how to download and install? If so, you can just go to www.winamp.com, download a player, and install it. It's free, unless you get the versions that you have to pay for (which isn't worth it, in my opinion). Once it's installed, you can then play music files with it. Edit: I was still typing when las posted. Sorry! First, I'll recommend Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winamp
Now, without looking at that article, I'll give you my own introduction to Winamp. Winamp is a music-playing program. It can, by itself, handle most sound-media filetypes--mp3, wav, mid, ogg, wma, au, etc.. It also handles playlists (e.g. m3u, pls). (It might also be able to play some video files, but I'm not sure about this--never tried it. I have Media Player Classic, another media player program, for that.) Winamp can be downloaded at www.winamp.com, and is freeware, which means you can use a basic but fully functional version of it forever without having to pay for it. (Watch out for 'third-party' (other companies') software, though, which might have nasty license agreements.) If you want some spiffy features, you'll have to pay for "Winamp Pro", but I personally think that they rarely, if ever, become useful. Winamp is NOT affiliated with Windows or Microsoft other than the fact that the program works on Windows operating systems. (At least that's what I know.) Despite the similarity of name. I like Winamp for three reasons: 1. Opens quickly. Winamp's program starting time is much shorter than Windows Media Player's. (Closing time is also shorter.) 2. Small and unobstrusive. Use Winamp's 'Classic Skin' (a skin is a particular appearance-style for a program's interface, and has nothing to do with the functionality unless the skin is badly-designed). It shows three small rectangles in the corner of your screen--one for general functions (play, pause, stop, next/back, etc.), one for tone variations (I never use this but I keep it there anyways, since it's sometimes fun to play with), and one for your playlist. Never as big or flashy as Windows Media Player (and I don't need the 'visualization' anyways). 3. It plays videogame music. Seriously, I'm a videogame music freak, and I'm pretty sure there're more around here. Winamp is the only media player (out of itself, Windows Media Player (WMP), RealPlayer, iTunes, Media Player Classic, and MusicMatch Jukebox) that has plug-ins designed for playing videogame music ripped directly from the games, in original format. Using this, you can hear exactly what you hear when you play the game on the corresponding system. No crappy midi files. And they're usually much, much smaller than mp3s (about 10-250 times smaller, depending on the console). AND if you're like me, you'll like being able to use them as real background music and infinite-loop them (i.e. they keep on playing over and over again, as in the game). Winamp's one deficiency is playlist management. In comparison to WMP, in which playlist managing (removing and adding files) is a lot easier, and which tries to find where you moved a song if you moved it (and auto-renames the file request so it plays the same song even if it's been moved and renamed), Winamp is relatively inefficient at playlist management. It can add all the media in a folder, or it can add song by song, or you can delete song by song. If you delete a song, though, your little 'cursor' won't stay in the window, and you'll still have to use the mouse. If you like using the mouse, then that's cool; if you don't (like me on a laptop), then that's somewhat of a hassle. But that's the only way Winamp loses to WMP. Winamp has better controls than WMP. WMP has strange controls which I never memorized. Winamp has five buttons arranged in order (previous, play, pause, stop, next), and the controls are simply z, x, c, v, b--the bottom left corner of the keyboard, arranged in the same order. What's a plug-in? A plug-in is a small file that allows a program to have a feature it wasn't originally designed with. For example, if you had a program that could only play mp3s, you might be able to install a plug-in to make it play wav files as well. Plug-ins are usually small files with extension .dll , and aren't programs in themselves, but are more like instructions that let the host program do something new. Winamp doesn't come with the ability to play videogame music formats, but you can install plug-ins to give Winamp that ability. (For some formats, such as PSF (Playstation), you'll have to use winamp, since there isn't any other way to play them.) You can find both game music and corresponding players (look under 'Utilities') at Zophar.net . Edit Shouldn't this be moved to General Topics? It should come with instructions, but in case it doesn't, here's what to do:
Assuming you have Windows: You should have your Winamp folder somewhere on your hard drive. For example, let's say you installed it directly in C drive, so you'd have C:\Winamp . Inside it, you should find a folder called Plugins. Go there, and you should see a whole bunch of .dll files. Put your plugin dll file there. It should work automatically once you start Winamp again. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I used to use winamp exclusively but one of my anal retentive friends begged me to switch to WMP because it organizes your music for you!
So now that all my music is in little files and folders etc...the way I listen to music doesn't work too well with winamp anymore. I'm stuck like I knew I would be...why am I friends with this guy? -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |
